The Medici were a famous Florentine family, founded by Giovanni Medici
(1360-1429) who founded a great fortune from commerce & banking. The Medicis
over the centuries influenced politics greatly and also sponsored works of
art and architecture. Giovanni Medici (1475 - 1521) even became Pope as Pope
Leo X.
