CHARLES I (1600-1649) King of Great Britain and Ireland from 1625. Son of James VI of Scotland. In 1625 he also married Henrietta Marie, daughter of Henry IV of France. Friction with parliament eventually led to the English Civil War. prior to this, for 11 years, Charles had ruled without parliament. His defeat at the Battle of Naseby (1645) ended all Royalist hopes. Charles was tried and executed in 1649, being succeded by Oliver Cromwell as Lord Protector.
