GEOFFREY CHAUCER
(1340-1400)
English poet.Born in London. He was taken prisoner in the French wars in
1359. Chaucer was ransomed and subsequently held various court appointments.
His major work was THE CANTERBURY TALES and he was instrumental through his
writings in developing modern English as a language. He is buried in poets
corner in Westminster Abbey.
