     TWAIN APPLICATIONS
     ===================================================================

       A. General Information:

TWAIN is a set of files that allows you to scan with TWAIN
compliant Windows based applications, even though your scanner is
not directly supported in that program. You still need to load
your scanner's device driver; USCAN.SYS, into the CONFIG.SYS file.
Two examples of TWAIN compliant applications available from
Envisions are Adobe's Photoshop 2.5 for Windows, and Media
          Cybernetics Halo Desktop Imager 2.0.

The TWAIN setup process is easy to complete. Please follow
          these steps:

          a. Make a sub-directory under the WINDOWS directory called...TWAIN

          b. Insert the ENVISIONS Scanner Driver Disk into a floppy
drive, and change to the TWAIN sub-directory on that disk.
In that sub-directory is a file called ENVISION.DS. Copy this
file to the TWAIN sub-directory you just created on the
             hard disk.

          c. In that same sub-directory on the floppy are two other needed
files, called TWAIN.DLL, and TWAIN.HLP. Copy both of these
             files into the WINDOWS directory.

NOTE: The instructions above cover general TWAIN installation.
See the sections below for specific information for using
TWAIN support with Photoshop 2.5, Halo Desktop Imager, and

       E. TWAIN NOTES

If you encounter an error message when attempting to access the
TWAIN HELP system; do not be alarmed. Please follow these
instructions for setting up the TWAIN HELP system:

          1) Perform a scan using TWAIN, following the instructions above.
The type of scan does not matter, simply scan anything.

          2) Exit the program that you scanned from, and then exit Windows.

          3) Re-load Windows, and access the NOTEPAD. Select FILE|OPEN, and
open the file in the Windows directory called UTWAIN.INI.

          4) Add the following line to the end of the file...

             Help File=C:\Windows\Twain.Hlp

          5) Don't forget to change C: to whatever drive Windows was
installed to, as in D: for example. Select FILE|SAVE after you
have completed editing the file. The HELP system is now ready
             to go.

          * When you access the TWAIN help file, you will notice that it
says UMAX TWAIN help. This is correct, as we are simply waiting
for software changes to be completed to the help file.

          * If you are scanning in color and you notice that not all colors
are being "picked up" by the scanner; go to SETTINGS|SETUP
SCANNER, and select PROGRAMMED I/O as your DATA TRANSFER method.
Using DMA will speed up operations, but on many systems DMA does
not work correctly, so you should select PROGRAMMED I/O.

          * Finally, if you perform a PRE-SCAN or a SCANNER TEST, the length
of the scan is dependent upon a selection made in the SETTINGS
menu area. To verify this setting, go to SETTINGS|PREVIEW SIZE,
and check the selection. Whatever this setting is on, is the
length that your PRE-SCAN or SCANNER TEST will go to.
