NOTE: DAMAGED/MISSING GOODS - If you notice anything that appears
to be missing or damaged; please contact Envisions Customer
Relations at 415-692-9061 as soon as possible. Save the
shipping and packaging material in case you need to ship the
           scanner in the future.

REGISTRATION CARD - There is NO registration card that comes
with the scanner. You were automatically registered when you
           purchased the unit.

ENVISIONS or UMAX - Envisions scanners are made by UMAX.
Most of the applications that work with these units, will
have dialog boxes that show UMAX as the scanner being used.
Do not be alarmed by this. Selecting UMAX or Envisions will
give you the correct scanner selection.

  2. REMOVE SHIPPING RESTRAINT

Remove the shipping restraint at the bottom of the scanner using a
phillips screw driver. Refer to the Operations Manual for detailed
information on removing and replacing the shipping restraint.

  3. HARDWARE INSTALLATION

     For IBM PC and Compatibles:

       a. Remove the scanner interface card from the anti-static bag,
          and check all switch settings.

         Default Settings:

           1. (All ENVISIONS Scanners)

              * SW1: 1 & 2 = OFF, 3 TO 6 = ON (I/O Address = 300H)

              * SW2: Set To SCSI ID 7 - This must be different than the
setting on the back of the scanner. The scanner defaults
to SCSI 5, and the SCSI Card is set for SCSI 7. This is
              correct.

              * Jumper installed on JP4 (IRQ9)

              * SIP 2 to 5 with terminator installed

computer's cover OFF, until you have sucessfully scanned.

       e. Attach the scanner cable from the computer to the scanner.

       f. Power up the scanner first, then the computer. Make sure the
"Ready" light comes on and stays on after the busy light goes
          out.

       g. Find the BACKUP copy of your PS/2 REFERENCE DISK, and copy the
5666.ADF file to that disk. This file is located in the root
directory of the ENVISIONS Scanner Driver Disk.

       h. Boot up your computer. When error message 165 appears, insert
the IBM PS/2 REFERENCE DISK into the floppy drive and press F1

               Ŀ
               ON ڿ ڿ ڿ ڿ

               OFF ڿ ڿ

         Hex.: 200 100 80 40 20 10 (in Hexadecimal value)

Fig.1 SW1 DIP switch on interface card (PC only) showing I/O
                address set to 300 Hexidecimal.

When the switch is set to OFF, add that value to the I/O address.
For example, to set address to 300H, you should set #1 and #2 to
OFF, and #3 to #6 to ON. Allowable addresses are 100 Hex to 3F0
Hex. The H is not needed nor allowed in the test program.

NOTE: If you experience address conflicts using the default
I/O address, try setting the address to 100H. If this
still doesn't work, try address 330H.

  7. TWAIN APPLICATIONS
     ===================================================================

       A. General Information:

TWAIN is a set of files that allows you to scan with TWAIN
compliant Windows based applications, even though your scanner is
not directly supported in that program. You still need to load
your scanner's device driver; USCAN.SYS, into the CONFIG.SYS file.
Two examples of TWAIN compliant applications available from
Envisions are Adobe's Photoshop 2.5 for Windows, and Media
          Cybernetics Halo Desktop Imager 2.0.

The TWAIN setup process is easy to complete. Please follow
          these steps:

          a. Make a sub-directory under the WINDOWS directory called...TWAIN

          b. Insert the ENVISIONS Scanner Driver Disk into a floppy
drive, and change to the TWAIN sub-directory on that disk.
In that sub-directory is a file called ENVISION.DS. Copy this
file to the TWAIN sub-directory you just created on the
             hard disk.

          c. In that same sub-directory are two other needed files, called
TWAIN.DLL, and TWAIN.HLP. Copy both of these files into the
             WINDOWS directory.

NOTE: The instructions above cover general TWAIN installation.
See the sections below for specific information for using

          c. Select USE TWAIN DRIVER, and Click OK.

          d. Select ENVISIONS SCAN, and click SELECT.

          e. Select FILE|ACQUIRE.

          f. Select your PAGE SIZE and ORIENTATION, and click OK.

          g. Scan normally, and refer to the ScanType manual for more
             information.

       E. TWAIN NOTES

If you encounter an error message when attempting to access the
TWAIN HELP system; do not be alarmed. Please follow these
instructions for setting up the TWAIN HELP system:

          1) Perform a scan using TWAIN, following the instructions above.
The type of scan does not matter, simply scan anything.

          2) Exit the program that you scanned from, and then exit Windows.

          3) Re-load Windows, and access the NOTEPAD. Select FILE|OPEN, and
open the file in the Windows directory called UTWAIN.INI.

          4) Add the following line to the end of the file...

             Help File=C:\Windows\Twain.Hlp

          5) Don't forget to change C: to whatever drive Windows was
installed to, as in D: for example. Select FILE|SAVE after you
have completed editing the file. The HELP system is now ready
             to go.

          * When you access the TWAIN help file, you will notice that it
says UMAX TWAIN help. This is correct, as we are simply waiting
for software changes to be completed to the help file.

          * If you are scanning in color and you notice that not all colors
are being "picked up" by the scanner; go to SETTINGS|SETUP
SCANNER, and select PROGRAMMED I/O as your DATA TRANSFER method.
Using DMA will speed up operations, but on many systems DMA does
not work correctly, so you should select PROGRAMMED I/O.

          * Finally, if you perform a PRE-SCAN or a SCANNER TEST, the length
of the scan is dependent upon a selection made in the SETTINGS
menu area. To verify this setting, go to SETTINGS|PREVIEW SIZE,
and check the selection. Whatever this setting is on, is the
length that your PRE-SCAN or SCANNER TEST will go to.

  6A. USING THE TRANSPARENCY OPTION
      ==================================================================

          a. Install the Transparency device as per the documentation
that came with it. Read the ENTIRE manual that came with
the unit, as it contains important information regarding
             the use of the unit.

          b. You can scan a transparency with a TWAIN compliant
application. Your scanner includes either Photoshop 2.5,
or Desktop Imager 2.0. Both of these programs support
             TWAIN.

          c. Follow all of the previous instructions regarding
installing and setting up either of the applications. When
the scanning dialog box comes up, click on the scanner
option that says REFLECTIVE. You will see an alternate
option called TRANSPARENCY. Select this option and scan
             normally.

  7. A NOTE ABOUT WINDOWS
     ===================================================================

          a. Windows 3.1 can be a very complicated operating system.
Problems crop up in Windows, that never use to exist on DOS
based computers. Here are a few tips, in case you run into
             problems scanning in Windows:

             1) When scanning; make sure that ALL other Windows
operations are complete. In other words, do not try to
scan at the same time as sending a fax, or printing a
document in the background. Also close up any
                application programs that are active.

             2) Close up all "utilities." This means programs like
background virus checkers, screen blankers, cursor
utilities, or any other similar utilities that reside in
                memory.

          b. WINDOWS VIDEO SETUP

When you first install Windows, it sets up your video
display. This scanning package ONLY supports color VGA
monitors and display adapters. The VGA video drivers that
come with Windows, will only display 16 colors on your
             screen.

16 color displays are NOT ideal for either gray-scale or
color scanning. They will reproduce the image on the
screen with what appears to be a defect. It is not a
defect, but simply the way the image is displayed on a 16
             color video driver.

Ideally, Windows should be set up with a 256 color video
driver. This will offer you a much more detailed and real
life image on the screen. To obtain the driver, you need
to identify who the maker of your video card is. Examples
             are Trident, ATI, Video 7.

Contact the manufacturer for a copy of the latest video
drivers for your video card and Windows 3.1. The drivers
are usually free of charge. Once you get the drivers,
refer to the WINDOWS SETUP section of the Windows manual.
It will describe the procedure to use, and set up the
             driver.
