WHAT IS QWIT?

QWIT is a simple Microsoft Windows application that, as its name suggests,
quits out of Windows. Although QWIT is designed to be used with Quarterdeck's
SideBar product, it will also work under any other Windows shell.

QWIT was written in response to user requests for an "exit icon" on the
SideBar Iconbar. The shipping version of SideBar (1.00, as of this writing)
does not feature an exit icon, but QWIT can be used as an easy way to fill
this need.

USING QWIT

QWIT is a very simple program. SideBar users can install QWIT by dragging
QWIT.EXE from a directory view window and dropping it onto the Iconbar or the
Desktop. (Of course, it's also possible to drop QWIT into a folder, but
folders aren't usually immediately visible at all times, so keeping QWIT on
the Iconbar or Desktop is recommended for quick and easy access.)

The only other step is copying CTL3DV2.DLL to the SYSTEM directory that is
located in your Windows directory.

Once QWIT is installed on the Iconbar, you can quit out of Windows simply by
double-clicking on its icon. By default, QWIT will comply with SideBar's
shutdown-confirmation setting. Depending on how this is set, QWIT will either
ask you for confirmation, or it will exit from Windows without asking for any
confirmation on your part. (However, this can be changed if you wish; see
CONFIRMATION, below.) This shouldn't be a problem in most cases because
well-written Windows applications will prompt users to save their work before
allowing Windows to quit.

Also, when Confirmation is active, QWIT will allow you to tell Windows to
restart immediately upon exit. Just check the "Restart Windows after exit"
checkbox, and voila!

CONFIRMATION

QWIT has a built-in "safety net", should you choose to use it. Simply add the
CONFIRM parameter to the Parameters field of the Link Properties page for the
QWIT.EXE object, and QWIT will always pop up a dialog box warning you that you
are about to leave Windows, regardless of whether or not SideBar is configured
to confirm exits. When this box pops up, you can either choose to leave
Windows or cancel the request; QWIT will abort and you will return to your
Windows session.

Alternatively, if you are a brave soul and KNOW that you will never want QWIT
to confirm your exits, use the NOCONFIRM parameter on the QWIT command line,
and it will keep quiet.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Since QWIT is so simple, there are very few chances that problems will arise
when using it. The only problem I have been able to find is the absence of
the CTL3DV2.DLL file. This file is _absolutely_required_ by QWIT (it provides
QWIT's Confirmation dialog with its nifty 3-D appearance), and must be in the
SYSTEM directory beneath the directory where Windows is installed (typically
C:\WINDOWS, so CTL3DV2.DLL would generally need to be in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM).
If this file is missing, you will receive an error message telling you so.
CTL3DV2.DLL is a popular DLL that may ship with many applications, so you may
already have a copy installed.
