                                  The GUI Group Magazine!

I believe that this is the first ever User's Group Magazine in true (digital paper) format. We hope to publish an electronic reprint of each quarterly hard copy magazine about thirty days after our members have received the paper issue. And we may publish supplemental digital versions between the quarterly paper editions, if enough acceptable copy is received to justify such additional Issues.
This electronic version has been published with consideration given to the possibility of it being run on a variety of platforms, so aesthetics have suffered a bit in order to allow for viewing at color levels from monochrome up to the monitor/driver combinations that allow 16.7 million colors. However, I strongly recommend using 800x600 and 256 colors (or more) for best viewing.
GUINEWS3.ZIP expands into this READ1ST file, a BNSPLITA.ZIP file and the GW2TMF#3.EXE file. After unzipping into a directory, just RUN the resulting GW2TMF#3.EXE file under Windows, and the magazine will appear on your screen.
The BNSPLITA.ZIP will Unzip into a BNSPLIT.EXE and a BNMERGE.EXE. BNSPLIT has it's own README.TXT file, and you should read that text before using the program. We have included BNSPLIT in order to facilitate the transfer of the magazine to disk, or to allow for electronic transmittal of the magazine across systems that have a byte limit on the size of file transfers. (For example, Prodigy file transfers are limited to 1 Meg. BNSPLIT, unlike some other programs, allows you to break a zipped file into a size of your choice. Using the Prodigy example, the file can be broken into 900k pieces for a file transfer.) BNMERGE can then be used to reassemble the file. BNSPLIT was written by our own Bob Nick , a valued contributor to the magazine. Bob can be contacted via Internet E-Mail at FPHE65C@prodigy.com
While you may print the magazine, it does require a LARGE TEMP file that it uses as a print buffer, so be sure you have available disk space. (In one earlier test run, the temp file was 40 Megs. Of course, it disappears after the printing is finished.) The file also takes a long time to print. For both those reasons, you may find that printing a few pages at a time works best. However, should you have any problems printing the large graphics, Common Ground has allowed me to distribute a "Special User's Group" viewer to GUI members. This viewer allows for Zoom/Unzoom, Thumbnail viewing, a "grabber" that allows for easy scrolling and Cut/Paste. Using Cut/Paste, you can transfer any articles you choose into your favorite Windows word processing program. That will facilitate an easy printing solution for those with dot matrix printers, or those who want a quick "text only" print out. To receive the User's Group Viewer, you must first be a member of the GUI Group. Then, you need to send two formatted 3 1/2" disks (1.44 Meg-High Density), with appropriate return postage attached, to:

Screen viewing with the attached mini-viewer requires you to use the PAGE (up & down) keys to scroll. There is a drop down menu at the top of the mini-viewer that will also allow you to go to a specific page, or you can use the Ctrl key with the PAGE keys to move page by page. Common Ground is trying to come up with a way to do away with the scrolling, but no solution is currently available that will allow for the standard magazine format.
As we have been fortunate enough to keep the GUI Group going as a dues free group, while keeping the magazine free of advertisements, I would be remiss if I didn't give some thanks to the folks who have made that possible. Our thanks are extended to Gateway 2000 for assisting the GUI Group by paying for the printing and mailing costs for the hard copy of the magazine and the use of their BBS to help in distribution of the digital paper version. No Hands Software gets a GUI thank you for their great Common Ground (digital paper) program that formats this magazine for electronic transmission/viewing, and their generosity in producing, and allowing the free distribution of, the Special User's Group Viewer. And, finally, the folks without whom GUI would never have gotten past the idea stage. An award of the "Mauve Garter <g>" goes to: Cyndy Lloyd of Gateway 2000 for her tireless work in helping me get this magazine off the ground; Bob Nick, Walter Arnold, Phil Teitelbaum, Mike Goetz, Louis Forte', Steve Asakawa and Mike Tichon for their help in proof reading and recruiting; the "core group" who offer so much assistance both in the publication of the magazine and by providing tech help on the various services and, of course, the various members who have submitted articles to the magazine. If you have comments, suggestions or wish to submit an article please E-Mail me at FPJA02A@prodigy.com,
To join the GUI Group, just send me your (postal) mailing address and zip-code.
	Thanks,
