How To Install Sound Pen
-----------------------------------------------------
No installation hassles, drivers or DLLs are required to use the Sound Pen.
To install just decompress the spen.zip file to a directory of your choice
(like C:\SPEN) and run the SPEN.EXE file. That's it.

For a more realistic experience you can copy the LCDGRID1.TTF True Type font
to your C:\WINDOWS\FONTS directory (substitute C: with another drive if installed elsewhere). This will more closely emulate the SC88's LCD font.

How To Use Sound Pen
-----------------------------------------------------

The Sound Pen interface allows you to create graphical patterns to be
displayed on your Roland Sound Canvas. Text strings can be created as well to
give your MIDI files a custom signature string. Sound Pen runs on Win95/98 or
Win NT and can export your work to Cakewalk .SYX files to be embedded into
your MIDI files.

Operation:

1) Run the SPEN.EXE file.

2) Select a MIDI output device from the drop down menu in the upper right
hand corner. Be sure that your Sound Canvas is already configured to
receive MIDI data from your Windows drivers.

3) Select individual dots in the display area by clicking the left mouse
button on the dot or use the 'All On' or 'All Off' buttons to make
   sweeping changes.

4) Press the 'Apply' button to update the Sound Canvas display.

5) Enter text into the 'Display String' box in the lower left hand corner
then press 'Send' to update the Sound Canvas display.

6) To save your work simply press the 'Save' button. All your dot display
data will be saved as DOTS.SYX and your text string will be saved as
TEXT.SYX in your current working directory.

A note about SYX files:
--------------------------------------------------

The SYX extension is used and recognized by Cakewalk sequencers as a system
exclusive (SYSEX) message file. Those of you wishing to use the SYSEX output
for other sequencers may simply rename the extension since the file created is a
standard Roland sysex message.

The DOTS.SYX message will load page 1 of your Sound Canvas display. Use
SHOWPAGE.SYX (included with this distribution) in your MIDI files to trigger
the display during playback and show page 1.
