							RandomSig 2.0
						((c) Guillaume Jay 1998-**)

RandomSig is a very simple freeware program that adds a random tagline (such as a quote) to your email signature file.

It is a 32-bit application, so it only works on Windows 95/98 and NT.

This program was born on an Unix system, a few years ago. Lately, I was looking for a simple application like this one. But I couldn't find one small, quick, and efficient.
I don't need a GUI, I don't need a icon in the try, I just want something fast that I can forget about it.

Copyright notice :

This program is freeware. You can copy and use it as you like. Whether it works or not, or how it works is your problem. I am not responsible and you may not sue me.
You even have the source (Yes, I'm not ashamed. But I'm not proud, too...)

Syntax :

RandomSig has no graphic interface. Syntaxe is :

	RandomSig <signature-file>

signature-file is the file you want RandomSig to create, containing your header, and a randomly selected quote. This header and quote will be contained in "sigs.txt", a file which must be located in the same directory than RandomSig

Just try RandomSig sig.txt, and look at sig.txt.

Installation : (simple)

	1) unzip the file (because you are reading this file, you have perhaps already done that) in a given folder.
	2) adapt the sigs.txt file
	3) schedule the program to be run from time to time (you can do this by using the System Agent that is a part of Windows Plus!, or you can put a shortcut to the program in your startup-menu, so it is run every time you reboot your computer (that's how I use it)). You can use RandomSigHelper to automatically create this shortcut.
	4) edit the preferences of your email client to make it point to the new signature file.

Signatures files format:

All lines beginning by #C are comments, and ignored before the beginning of the quotes.

All lines before the quotes separator are considered as being your header (present in all signature).

The quote separators is "#N". On the next line, you must put the number of quotes in file.

Ater, you can write the various quotes you want to use, separated by a "#".

Just look at the example signatures file sigs.txt to have a clearer idea.

You can use the RandomSigHelper program (available at my web page) to help you in modifying this file.

General comments about Signatures :

A signature should not be too long. Five lines is more than enough.
Your signature should be formatted to fit in 78 columns.
Using a line with '-- ' as first line of your header is a good idea. It will help email and news client program to cut the messsage from the signature.

Program History:

1996 : first creation, in C ANSI, under Unix.
v1.0 (25/06/1998) : quick port to Windows95.
v2.0 (02/02/1999) : complete rewriting. 102b smaller.
