What's New In LANtastic Network Operating System V4.00?

Full Microsoft(R) Windows(Tm) Support

You can use LANtastic NOS V4.00 with Microsoft Windows V3.0 and above on
both servers and workstations, in any mode including Enhanced 386.  You
can enjoy the ease of use and flexibility of the graphical user interface,
with all the great features for which LANtastic is famous.

Artisoft also offers LANtastic for Windows -- a Windows-based interface to
our network operating system.  This simple, elegant program allows you to 
use all the functions of LANtastic's NET and NET_MGR, without exiting

Incredible New Performance

The last version of LANtastic Network Operating System blew away the
competition and now LANtastic NOS is even faster.  By carefully reworking 
how our NETBIOS and Network Operating System (NOS) function together, 
we've created a system that is up to 300% faster on certain types of data 
transfers than our previous world-beating NOS.


Dedicated Or Peer-To-Peer Servers

With the ALONE program you can run a server in dedicated mode, then switch
back to peer-to-peer mode at a moment s notice.  In dedicated mode, your
computer will service the network with unsurpassed performance.  By
side-stepping DOS, ALONE allows your computer to perform more simultaneous
user requests with no loss in performance.  If you need to use that server
for local functions, simply exit the ALONE program and the computer will
function as a LANtastic peer-to-peer server.


A New LANcache

LANcache set a new standard for network caching software by caching both
reads and writes.  And LANcache's background writing operations allow a
server to perform user requests as foreground tasks while writing to disk
in the background.  The new LANcache is even faster and more efficient.
No caching software works better with DOS and LANtastic than LANcache.
And the new LANcache is designed to be fully compatible with Microsoft
Windows.  When LANcache detects that Windows is running, it will release
its own memory to Windows to allow better performance.


Easier, More Flexible Installation

Now LANtastic is not only easier to install, you can set up your whole
network -- servers, workstations, shared resources and user accounts -- 
when you install the system software.  LANtastic makes it easy to do it 
right the first time.


Unloadable From Memory

If you ever need to free up what little RAM LANtastic uses, you can now
remove LANtastic Network Operating System from memory without rebooting.


Remote Processing

If you have a large task to perform, it makes sense to use the fastest
computer on the network to do the processing.  The NET RUN command lets
you remotely issue commands to a network server.  This means you can use
your fastest servers for RAM and hardware intensive tasks such as database
sorts, compiles and backups.  While this is going on you can still use
your local workstation for remote processing.


UPS Support

If you have an Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) connected to your
server, LANtastic will now work in unison with it to safeguard your
network.  If the UPS signals a server that a shutdown is imminent,
LANtastic will warn all the network users, give them time to log off, then
close all the open network files so that no one loses any work.  If the power 
returns, LANtastic Network Operating System will abort the shutdown and 
tell the users there's nothing to worry about.  (Requires support
software.)  The list of supported UPS manufacturers continues to grow.
Currently this list includes American Power Conversion (800-541-8896),
Para Systems, Inc. (800-238-7272), Tripp Lite (312-329-1777) and Sola
Electric (800-879-7652).


Group Accounts

Now you can create a single username such as ACCT* and assign it a
password and access rights.  Users can then log in with any username that
has the ACCT prefix, such as ACCT-LINDA.  This can save much time during
setup since you need to create only one user account for a group of users.
The server is still secure, however, since you can require a password to
use the wildcard username.

Unlimited Version Of LANtastic/AI

You can now purchase an unlimited version of LANtastic/AI so you can add
as many nodes to your network as you wish.  This can save you hundreds of
dollars over the price of purchasing individual licenses.  You get the all
drivers with the unlimited version that you get with the per node version
of LANtastic/AI.


LANtastic/AI Drivers

LANtastic/AI now offers increased support for SMC-compatible ARCNET
adapters.  Our SMCARC.EXE driver supports Standard Microsystems adapters
PC120, PC130, PC130E, PC220, PC260, PC270E and PC500 (short board).  The
new driver, ARCNET.EXE, interfaces with all SMC- compatible ARCNET
adapters.  There is also a new 3COM 3C503 driver.  (This driver functions
in memory mapped mode only.)
