Public Domain & Shareware Programs that have been placed in the public domain by their authors are free to use, and may be copied freely by anyone. This is not the case with Shareware ( often called User-Supported software ). Basically, the authors of the Shareware retain all rights to the software under the copyright laws and simply allow the distribution of their programs freely or with minimal restricions. In other words, shareware is NOT free. The idea of Shareware is to try it for a reasonable trial or test period , if you decide to use it, you must register with the author.
