If you have ever wondered what all the people in the shops, companies, hotels or restaurants really know, you will find the answer by reading this text. It has been translated from Norwegian, but we've tried to keep it as close to the original as possible, although this might have lowered the quality of the language a bit. The Norwegian version may be obtained by contacting us. In later issues of Substance, we will be discussing how to use the automatic VISA checker mentioned in the text, how to calculate your own, valid VISA cards, as well as how to safely use your cards. If you have ever, successfully or not, tried to buy anything with another person's VISA card and want to share your experiences with anyone who might need it, please contact us as soon as possible! Guidance for places accepting VISA ---------------------------------- 1. Marking - Make sure your customers see that you accept VISA Good VISA-Service Increases Possibilities For Sale By accepting the VISA card as a currency, you can render even better service to your customers, giving you possibilities for increased sale. Even in Norway VISA has got 700,000 holders, and many million on a world basis. No other cards has got a larger spread, neither in Norway, nor in the world as a whole. VISA is the banks' own payment-card and is linked directly to the holders bank account. See that the marking is good, so that your customers can see that they can pay with VISA. Put VISA-marks easy visible on or by the entrance, and on the counter or the cash-desk. Don't let there be any doubt that you accept VISA. Distinct VISA-marking is experienced as good service by the customer. 2. The card - The VISA card is easy to recognize The VISA card's look varies from bank to bank, and from country to country. Wherever the VISA card is issued, the right part of the card is the same, with two characteristic VISA-distinguishing marks: The VISA logo and the dove. All Norwegian VISA cards have a number that consists of sixteen digits, where the first four digits (that are both printed and stamped on the card) always are 4925, 4946, 4901 or 4569. Foreign VISA cards may also occur with thirteen digits. The first digit will always be a 4. Note that some cards is valid only in the country where they are issued. Such a card is marked 'valid only in (name of the country)' and is in consequence not valid in Norway. 'Expires end of ... ' implies that the card is valid until the end of the specified month/year. The VISA card must be signed by the customer to be valid. The signature is to be found at the back of the card. 3. The bill - The VISA-bill is easy to fill in 1) Fill in the date, the article- or servicetype (if necessary the authorisation-number and the signature from the salesman) and the amount in Norwegian kr. 2) Then place the VISA card and the bill in the copymachine, and pull the roll to and fro so that the card information is transferred to the bill. Make sure that an impression of *the entire card-number* is now on the bill. 3) The customer signs the bill, and gets his VISA card back as well as the midmost (yellow) copy of the bill. The upmost is the salesman's copy and is kept by the shop or company. The midmost (yellow) is the customer's copy. The last bill-copy is put in the settlement-envelope (already with address printed on it) together with the bill collection. 4) You keep the first bill. The last copy is sent to VISA Norway. (See 'Settlement' for further information.) - Check that everything is all right 1) Make sure the first four digits of the card's number are both printed and stamped on the card, and that the printed and the stamped digits are the same. 2) Check the card's expiration date. 3) See to that the print is distinct on all the three copies. 4) Check that the signature matches the signature on the card. 5) Some VISA cards today have a picture of the holder at the back. On these cards you have to check that the picture matches the person using the card. NB! If a satisfactory impression of the card can't be made, or you for other reasons, for instance when ordering by mail, have to write the information by hand, the use of the card should always be sanctioned by VISA Norway before the article is sent. The telephone-number is given in the bill portfolio. There you can also keep information about the present limit. If the copymachine produces an unsatisfactory card-impression, this may be adjusted by lifting the blue handle on the machine and adjusting the four screws that are to be find under the handle. IMPORTANT! Adjust carefully, maladjustment may cause damage to the VISA card. - Card-terminal Companies using a card-terminal must make sure that they have entered 'additional agreement for use of electronic payment-terminal' as well as the co-operation agreement. If such an agreement is not entered, VISA Norway Ltd. can not guarantee settlement for VISA cards used with the terminal. There are many kinds of card-terminals with which VISA cards may be used. Some of them perform a complete check of the card (automaticly calls for authorization). Other types only check the expiration date on the card, and one has to check the list of blocked cards and call for authorization oneself concerning sales of more than the limit. If you have any doubts as to which functions your terminal has got, contact your purveyor or bank. 4. Sanction - When should you call VISA Norway Ltd.? Sanction of cards There are some cases where you must call VISA Norway for them to sanction the use of the VISA card. This goes for: LIMITS: You should always call VISA Norway if the amount on the bill exceeds the limits. These are given in the bill-envelope and in the co-operation agreement. Remember to call before the card is given back to the customer! For security reasons the limits should not be given to irrelevant persons. HAND-WRITTEN BILLS: When the information stamped on the card for one reason of another has to be filled in by hand. BUYING BY MAIL/TELEPHONE: When the article or services is ordered by mail or telephone. ERROR ON THE CARD/SIGNATURE: If the first four digits in the stamped card number doesn't match the four printed digits, or the signature on the bill doesn't resemble the signature on the card. CANCELLED PURCHASES: When purchases sanctioned by VISA Norway are cancelled. INVALID EXPIRATION DATE/SIGNATURE: Cards should not be accepted if the expiration date has expired, or the card is used by a person with another name than what is printed on the card. SUSPICIOUS CARD HOLDER: If a person acts suspiciously, or you become uncertain for other reasons, call VISA Norway. When the card is sanctioned you will be given a six-digit number. This is to be written on the VISA bill in the square for authorization-number. - Blocked cards BLOCKED CARDS SHOULD BE CONFISCATED: Blocked cards can not be used. If anyone tries to pay with a blocked card, you should confiscate the card and call VISA Norway immediately. LISTS OF BLOCKED CARDS: All places accepting VISA in larger cities as well as certain trades, recieve VISA blocking lists every second week. In special cases time-limited blocking messages are also sent out (Hot Cards). REWARD: Whoever confiscates a blocked card and sends it to VISA Norway will recieve a reward. When delivering a lost card, a reward is also given. - Telephone for authorization 24-HOUR SERVICE: VISA Norway has got a telephone number for card authorization: 22 83 03 90. The authorization department is operated 24 hours a day, also on saturday and sunday. THE VISA-BUTTON: A new telephone number for authorization using a touch-tone telephone: 22 83 04 04. YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS BEFORE YOU CALL: Card number - expiration date - amount in Norwegian kr. - where you are calling from - company-number. 5. Settlement - You decide how fast you recieve your settlement Don't wait too long with returning the VISA-bills. By returning them too late, the bill might not be covered. Of course a fast settlement is always of your interest. - Guidance for VISA-settlement 1) The settlement-envelope should only contain VISA-bills. (VISA card-numbers begin with the digit 4.) 2) Sum the bills, fill in the number of bills and the total amount on the bill summary. 3) Sign the bill summary. 4) The bill summary is parted. You keep the 1. page. 5) The 2. page is sent to VISA Norway together with the bills. NB! The address printed on the settlement-envelope is to be used for settlement only. All other correspondence (for instance when changing bank account number) should be sent to the administration, and must not be put in the bill-envelope. It's of great importance that the bill and the bill summary that is sent in for settling of account is the VISA-copy (see the right margin at the counterfoils). 'The sales place's copies' will be returned without paying. This is done to avoid double settlement and double charging of the customer. If you need more material, some new VISA-marks, bills, envelopes and such, call us or send in your ordering-card. If you're uncertain of anything else, or there is something you wish to discuss, don't hesitate to call. Always give your company-number when calling VISA Norway. VISA Norway Ltd.
