VMB simply stands for Voice Mail Box. Basically what a VMB is, is a place where one could have a remote type answering machine. Although on most VMB's your sharing it with 10's to 100's of other people, but basically thats what it is. Lets get into an example,. You finally get that big chance to beige box out of your neighbors distribution box, you go and call Hacker's Headquarters BBS over in California. You start trading off a bunch of info., but you know when your neighbors get back from vacation, your beige boxing will be limited. So you ask yourself, how can i keep in touch with these west coast'ers? I can't give em' my fone number, for two reason's, i don't want a bunch of strangers knowing my home number, and the other reason is they probly won't bother making a long distance call. So you go and give em' your VMB number, since 90 percent of VMB's are on a 1-800 number. You tell em' to call there and leave you any messages and you'll do the same with them, if they're fortunate to own a VMB box number. Anyone from anywhere could call your box anytime and leave you any sort off info. It's really a good way to keep in touch. As you can see, there are advantages, but of course in this world there are always disadvantages too. First off if you call it a hundred times a day to check for messages your stupid, you have to remember that most 800 numbers have ANI (remember, number ID), so they can find out where your calling from if they feel there's a need. But if you keep your calls down to a few a day, you have no worries, that is where people go wrong when trying to hack out a box, they keep calling hundreds of times over and over again. You have to keep yourself from getting disconnected, more on this in a few. Another disadvantage is if you can get into a box so could the Fed's. But if your small time, you have no worries there either. O.K., here's standard VMB logon format. 1.- Call your VMB number. 2.- Wait for the business's recording to come on, (could be any kinda recording.) 3.- Press the Login Key 4.- Enter your Box Number 5.- Enter your Passcode Number 6.- If all goes well, your in at the main menu Now lets go a little bit in depth on these 6 steps. First you have to call the VMB system, like i said above, it's usually a 1-800 number. Of course there are some exceptions, for example college's usually have a VMB system, and usually they're not an 800 number, the same would go for inter-city boxes, for those city folks, also a few Bell telefone VMB systems were found down in the XXX-00xx area of most exchanges. Anyway's, we'll only concearn ourselves with 800's numbers for now. Next we hear the recorded message. Now don't let this fool you when your scanning for VMB system's. Yeah on some of the VMB numbers, you'll get some sorta message saying your logged onto a VMB system. But on alot you'll just get a typical general message. For example, you might hear "Hello, here is next weeks business agenda...etc.", not even knowing there's a VMB system hiding behind that recording. When you scan numbers, wait and listen for any kinda recording, if you get a high quality recorded message, not an answering machine type message, chances are you'll find a VMB system behind it. The only way to know is to try pressing the special Login Keys, if they work they'll stop the recording. By now i'm sure your asking, "Just what in the hell are the Login Key's ?", Well on most systems it'll be either the star (*) or the number 100. But don't forget to try pound (#) and the digits '8' '9' and '0'. If they don't get you anywhere, you can be certain it's not your lucky day and try another number. If after entering the login key, and the recording stops, but you get nothing, keep entering 0's until you get something, and count the number of 0's you entered, for this will tell you how many digits the boxes on the sytem are. Also be sure to remember that on some systems there can be more then one box length depending upon the first digit you enter. Another boring example, lets say you entered a 3 digit box number that is valid and it started with a 6, well you can be sure that all box numbers starting with a 6 will be three digits in length, but on the other hand you might find a four digit box that starts with a 9, so all boxes starting with a 9 will be four digits on that system. Ok, lets work with the most common here, a four digit system. Go ahead and enter any four digit's, you should get one of 3 things. a.- A recorded message telling you that box number is invalid. b.- It'll ring the extension of that person and if no answer it'll connect you to their mailbox. c.- Directly connect you to a mailbox. If you don't get to a mailbox, then try again. O.K., so now your connected to a valid mailbox and it's asking you for your passcode. First note the box number and later you can scan the boxes around it, since there will probly be a few others around it. Here's a very useful trick to use when scanning for valid box numbers. On most systems after enering 3 invald boxes, you'll get disconnected, and as we mentioned above, we don't want to have to keep calling back a hundred times. So you have to keep yourself from being disconnected. Here's what to do, after you find one valid box number, keep it in mind, even if you don't know the passcode yet. Then try scanning out other box numbers, if after 2 tries you don't get one, enter the valid number, then abort by hitting the '*' or the '#', and then you can start over again with two more tries. Now, comes the hard part, you have your valid box number and it's asking you for a passcode. Welp, first take note on if it's a virigin box or not. A virgin box is one that doesen't have a greeting and is probly not being used. It has a generic hello, for example it'll say "enter the passcode for box number xxxx", instead of "enter the passcode for Adam Bom's box" or something like that. If it has a generic greeting, chances are it has the default passcode, that people are supposed to change after they get the box. Once you find out what it is, you'll have more boxes then you know what to do with. For example if the box number is 3469, try passcode 3469. or try 9643. Some other favorites are 1111, 2222 etc. 1234, 4567 etc. Once you get their format, your set. If it's someone's box, without a generic hello, still try the defaults, some people are stupid'er then you think. Also remeber, that even if the box is four digits, that doesen't mean the passcode is. But usually it will be. Now, your heart is pounding, you got into a generic box and you know their default. What can you do now to find more boxes?, well once you in, you can send messages to other boxes. And you can also scan for other generic boxes. Now that your in your VMB you can screw up as much as you want, you won't get disconnected after 3 invalid attempts. Then when you make a list of all the valid generic boxes, call back and check a couple other's to make sure the default holds true. But don't get carried away, you only want to get into one at a time, save the others for later. If it's a generic box your in, just change the passcode and nothing else. Then check it every day for about a week and make sure it's not getting messed with. Then if it's alright, you can go and add your greeting and whatever else. Like i said only use one at a time. If your in a box that has a greeting on it, and it seems that someone is using it, you could do one of two things. Login, and don't touch anything, just check the messages and logout. Then call back and check it every other day, and see if the messages are getting deleted or if there aren't any new messages. Chances are, after about a month of inactivity, it's safe for you to take it over. If you jump right into it, you'll lost it in a day, guaranteed. Or you could just use it as an information source, call and listen to their messages, you could find out alot, dialup's, security measure's etc. He'll never know your logging in. After alot of trial and error, you'll become familiar with alot of different systems. Thus making it easier for you to hack on em'. Here are a few common systems and thier formats. 1.- ASPEN System. (Automated SPeech Exchange Network). This one has the most features of all and is one of the best. You can usually have two greetings, a regular and long term absence. Could set up guest accounts, urgent or regular messages, and tons of other shit. Can easily identify an ASPEN System, you get an annoying femal voice that usually identifies herself as an ASPEN System. Format is hitting a '*' to get into the system, then hit a '#'. Then you'll be prompted for a mailbox number. "Mailbox number please?". After the first invalid box it'll say "Mailbox xxx is invalid..." on the second wrong one it'll say "You dialed xxx, there is no such number...". and after the third wrong attempt, it'll rudely hang up on you. If you get a box number, it'll ask "Please enter your passcode". The most common default passcode on ASPEN is the same as the box number, or the box number plus 0. You get three attempts. After your in, you can choose option 3 to scan for other boxes without getting hung up. 2.- MESSAGE CENTER System. Popular with direct dials. For example one person, one box. During the greeting hit '*', it'll say "Hello Adam Bom", or who's ever it is. Please enter your passcode. Ok, here's where Message Center gets tricky. It'll stop you one digit after the code length, if you enter an invalid code. For example, if you entered 1324 and it stops you and tells you it's invalid, then you know it's not a four code system, but ony a three code system. It always waits until you entered an extra digit. Another trick, is if you entered an invalid code the first time, no matter what you enter after that, it'll say it's wrong. Then if you enter it the third time, and it's right, it'll let you in. They also have no default, you just hit '*' to get in. 3.- Q VOICE MAIL System. Not real common. Identifies itself as "Welcome ot Q Voice Mail Paging". Box numbers are usually 5 digits and you hit 0 to login. After getting in choose 3 from maim menu to scan out other boxes. 4.- CINDY Systems. Starts by saying good moring/afternoon/evening, whatever it is. "Please enter the mailbox you wish". After three invalid attempts, it'll say good day/evening, and hang you up. To Login enter a the box number, then during the greeting enter a 0, and then your passcode. The default for all CINDY Systems is a 0. Choose 6 from the main menu after your in, to scan for other boxes. You can also set up guest accounts, passwords, messages, etc. Alot like an ASPEN System. There are hundreds of other systems. You'll just have to take notes and put up with alot of trial and error, mostly error though. But if you really want a VMB you can get one. It's alot easier then hacking into a Unix system or sumthing like that. It just takes a little bit of time. Remeber, your best bet is to find a virgin systems, with virgin accounts on it. They'll last the longest. Virgin systems are systems that haven't been hacked on yet. Welp, i guess that concludes File #3.
