Our seniorAstaff now consists of four members for this issue: Black Spyrit,APaladin, Zodact and Genesis. Our programmers are: Lord ofAPeasants and Kublai Khan. As far as other business, iNSANITY #1Aappeared almost totally as an "iCE" magazine, however we haveAdecided to steer somewhat away from that in an attempt to createAa more general pirate "elite" magazine, with more and better4articles, respected members and quality at its best.AAfter taking a basic poll over CelerityNET and other places, theAgeneral agreement was to stay with the text/ansi interface thatAwas found in issue #1. I think all of theAspelling errors have been caught, but if not...o'ell.. A lot ofApeople have told us to run the articles through a grammarAchecker. My experience with these programs is that theyAsometimes destroy the writer's "style", even if that style is nothaving immaculate grammar.A There are some notable additions this issue, also. Well, DnA Is the newest kind of groupA out there. No we're not another one of those ANSi/VGA GroupsA that comes and goes real quick. No we're not another crackingA group. No We're not a newsletter group. We're a music group.A DnA stands for Digital Noise Alliance which we are known forA our musical releases. Yes that's right..Music. We specializeA in making music for your enjoyment. We currently are workingA on Sound Blaster, Adlib, Roland MT-32, and MIDI equipment inA general. We have about 36+ releases already out. Some of theA file formats that cover these areas include : VOCs, ROLs, STMs,A MIDs, WRKs, and we are soon hoping to employ a few AMiGA usersA to make MODs for us. We have about 7 members at the moment whoA are usually working on a song or another release for us.A Because it takes so long to make a Release and we've only beenA around about 4 months I'd say we're doing quite good. We haveA sites over most of the United States and one in Canada. IA figure since we've been around for about 4 months now (Gee..A it went by so fast!) that we should release an article in aA newsletter telling you all the information you might not haveA known about this semi-new music group, [DnA]. First I wouldA like to start with a brief history of [DnA] and how it was
founded. HISTORY -A After testing out the demo version of Scream Tracker on myA computer I decided to send away the money to register it.A Because of this, I received it a month later with a lot ofA fresh ideas on songs to make. (I had already mastered most ofA the commands of the program). And after only having theA registered version a few days, put forth my first songA (AggroMix.Stm). This really got me inspired and I decided toA start a group a few days later. I had remembered a group thatA mixed in Suzan Vega with a drum beat and really liked that. SoA I decided to honor them with the basis of the Acronym of DnA.A After a month or so of locally releasing songs, I met up withA the sysop of Inner City. If some of you don't know who that isA he goes by the handle of Father Time. He seemed to be theA first person interested in our songs and music and soon becameA my WHQ. Only a few short weeks after becoming a site he shutA his board down and I no longer had a WHQ. But he had given meA what I had needed to continue to help [DnA] to flourishA (Popularity). Because, not only were my songs beingA distributed locally but also across the state. Soon afterA accepting a few new members into the group I met up with TheA Silent Assassin. He really loved my stuff also and wanted toA become a site. Without hesitation he became my firstA International Site. Later I talked my friend (A local sysop)A Zyphril into becoming my World HeadQuarters and had requestsA from other BBSs. After choosing wisely I finally decided on these boards: High Voltage Chemical WarZone Digital Tension

I have recently heard all kinds of different prosA and cons to it, and many accounts of it working well forA people, and also it screwing things up and not working. I willA share with you my opinion and some info I have picked up from articles.A Basically, to start off, Stacker is a device driver with anA optional coprocessor board that stores data on your hard diskA in a compressed form. When you write something to your disk,A Stacker compresses the data before it's written. When you needA to access the data again, Stacker decompresses the informationA and lets you have it. So, it is said that Stacker "Doubles your hard drive space."A When you install Stacker, it creates a Stacker Volume,A compresses all your data currently on the hard drive, andA copies it over. You can set aside a certain amount of space onA the non-stacker volume that won't be touched by stacker, it'sA good to at least have a couple megs. Now, you should have$ close to twice the room available.A Now, Stacker performance. Well, there are two versions ofA Stacker, the software version and the coprocessor version withA software. Depending on what you do, Stacker will performA differently. With the coprocessor installed, it is said thatA reading and writing sequential information is faster than theA native hard disk, but when reading and writing randomA information, it is slower. So, with the coprocessor, theA performance seems to equal out, and seems to have little effectA on speed, yet doubles your hard drive space. With the softwareA version, it was benchmarked that it performed 18% slower thanA the coprocessor version, so, you get the doubled space, but+ with significant decrease in performance.A My own personal experience with Stacker was short lived. IA installed Stacker on my father's 286/12mhz with 2meg and triedA out various applications such as Windows, Excel, Word Perfect,A and some games. I didn't really notice a big difference inA performance. Speed in Windows wasn't really affected, but withA a 286, it's pig slow anyways. I did get double the space andA filled the whole thing up just to see. I got close to 80 megsA on a 44 meg. Not too bad. One thing I did notice was thatA copying from floppies to the Stacker Volume was SLOW. Like, 2A or 3 times slower, but, that's understandable because it has toA compress the new data. At my work, a guy with a 486 CADA station, installed it on a 40 meg drive, and he claims that it is faster.A So, basically, if you really need the space, and can't afford aA bigger hard drive, Stacker is the way to go. You will see someA loss of performance with the software only version, but the? with the coprocessor installed, performance shouldn't suffer.#Building your own computer (Part I)HyperionA If your current computer system was purchased completelyA assembled, it is likely that you overpaid by as much as 30%,A even if you purchased it through a mail-order company. If you purchase a 20 MHzA 386, you may run into trouble finding a replacement ifA the chip fails. The performance difference between a 20A MHz 386sx and a 20 Mhz 386 is so small, you are betterA off buying the sx and saving the extra cash for a better hard drive or VGA card.A 5. I have not found many bare motherboardsA with this chip, but if you find one, the cost isA typically about the same as 33 MHz boards with the IntelA chip. Six months ago I would have advised avoiding theA AMD processor, but they have proven to be reliable and? are now being used by many major system manufacturers.$ 6. This stood for VictoriaA Independent Piracy. Yes, I know it started out with the citiesA name; I have a reason. When we started our magazine, we didA not know how well it was going to do, and indeed, the first oneA kind of sucked. It did, however, get us all sorts ofA recognition. Most people started saying "hey, they need someA experience, but they are doing well", and they also said "keepA up the good work." Some of the other magazines were commenting,A and we never really heard anything bad, except from a couple ofA local people (wouldn't you know it). Well, we decided that theA first issue didn't go too badly (modesty has never gotten meA anywhere). I guess that was when we decided that issue two should, and will, be released.A Our men, Shadow... and Kisanth, went to work on it, andA produced what appeared to be a far superior magazine than weA had seen in issue 1. Thank god! With better structure, and aA better menuing system (yah, I know it wasn't pull down) we wereA able to attract a lot more attention to ourselves. Gasp,A someone was actually interested in becoming a distribution site.A Well, in the past month, there have been some drastic changes.A As soon as we released issue #2, our prez Shadow... skippedA town 4 a vacation (the nerve). When he got back, he took hisA board down so that he could enjoy the rest of the summer.A Well, time waits for no man (or sysop), and things had to beA done. Kisanth got an HST for his board, and then I got mineA <proud grin>. Him and I started calling long distance, andA when we introduced ourselves to the other sysops, we wereA surprised how many people had actually heard of us, and our magazine.A I had a couple of requests for boards to become dist. sites.A Things got going very very quickly. Because Shadow... wasn'tA around, and attempts to find him were sort of in vain, KisanthA and I assumed control of the group. Call it a Coup d'etat ifA you will, but it amounts to the same thing. The crown wasA usurped by the second and third commanding officers. Our firstA order of business was to change the name. The old nameA included the name of our city. We did not like that, so we gotA rid of it. Because ViP was/is so widely used, we decided to goA with a completely different name. Kisanth, being allergic toA acronyms, said "No initials!". Hence, he came up with the nameA Litespeed. Reluctantly, I accepted it, but I did get to likeA it after a bit of exposure to it. We started collecting ideas,% and I started writing this article.A Well, things kind of got crazy from there; a few of the ViPA members did not like the idea of us changing the name and allA that, so they decided to start ViP, and basically told usA (Kisanth and myself) to go write our mag without them. Shit,A that's not what I wanted. So Kisanth and I started trying toA figure out whether we were going to produce our own mag, or tryA to get back into ViP. Well, the other people didn't knowA whether we should be let back in, and then Shadow... showedA up. At first, we were okay, but then a confusion came about,A and in a matter of a week, Kisanth was in and out about four times.A To make a long story long, Kisanth and Ninji decided to startA their new mag, with the help of Crzy Joe, and I didn't knowA what the fuck was going on. Was ViP alive or what? Shadow...A calls my board, leaves a public msg, and then *BOOM*. JustA like that, the ViP prez killed ViP. So hey, ViP is dead, mostA of the original members are starting a mag. All in all, I am! glad the way things turned out.]ViSiON-XThe Grim Reaper; ViSiON-X 0.90 Release Target Date October '91AViSiON came into problems around April '91 after the old ViSiONATeam was caught phreak/hacking, and lost their computers. I know Neil well and he does not call my board at 2:00A am. Just as I was about to go into chat and say, "Hey, Neil wuzA up?" I see that the user started to download some new files likeA the new version of Celerity etc. I decided to look at theA Caller I.D. After half an hour of denying thatA he called my system I said, "Listen guy, does my phone lie or doA you?". The aborted fetus said, "your phone isn't workingA properly". I then tried the threat tactic and told the guy IA would be at his house in 15 minutes if he didn't come clean. HeA then proceeded to admit the whole thing and I found out he was aA THG courier that goes by the handle, "Quick Silver".A Apparently, Line Noise's TELIX.FON was on a THG Private Sub andA Quick Silver couldn't hold back his excitement seeing as heA wouldn't have gotten access to any system if he applied as himself anyway.A What ever happened to the good old days where there were goodA boards and you knew which ones they were and the locals thatA didn't yet deserve access didn't get it and those that did hadA to wait to get their chance. When they are first developed they will gain praise forA maybe one day, and then they will fade out of the woodwork andA leave a bad mark to the true ANSi group(s). This article willA delve into some of these groups which are functioning and someA which are dead, and hopefully give you second thoughts beforeA starting one of your own. Some groups used as examples will be TNT, RPM, and STRiKE.A The first example being TNT, is still alive but theyA are not turning out anything. This group was formed from theA remainder of STRiKE after its demise. Frankly, they suck. IA have NEVER seen one good ANSi ever by any member, except forA one which was partially stolen from one of my older efforts.A This is a great example of my opinion on the subject. TNTA created an empire of distribution sites and such but neverA turned out anything, they accepted members who could not drawA much better than the average modemer, they put their sorry nameA all over the scene in a series of disgusting advertisementsA (and are still doing so). These ADVERTISEMENTS andA distribution sites which put TNT all over everything should beA dragged off and shot. How many times have you seen this drivelA on a network such as CelerityNET or VelocityNET? CountlessA times no doubt... I'm sure they know they suck. If you are* reading this TNT, GIVE IT UP you suck!!!A RPM is also an example to learn from, RPM is definitelyA more of a serious effort than TNT, but it still has manyA shortcomings. RPM has turned out some very good artwork, butA the total CRAP of the group far outweighs some good artwork byA a couple members. Notably, Martial Law for ANSi (incidentallyA now in iCE), and Revelation for VGA were their best artists. IA believe they had many more as well which were all either totalA shit, or partial shit. That is where the problem starts, tooA many members, and too many distribution sites. With the largeA number of distribution sites, the RPM name will get spread allA over the place when they produce next to nothing. This isA irritating as hell, I can't stand to look at all of thoseA distribution sites, which advertise RPM, and have nothing onA them. Also, the public image of RPM in the beginning wasA helped by some "big namers" who supported the group. This isA also a crime, people judge the group by big names who don'tA even do anything, and don't produce any art. RPM can be savedA however if they kick out all of their shit artists and aboutA half of their distribution sites. Otherwise they grew too big) for the artwork which they can produce.A STRiKE, now this was a OK effort. I myself was a partA of this group. The quantity of artwork was not the problem,A the quality was. STRiKE like many other lamer ANSi groupsA released TONS of total SHIT and maybe for every 5 shit releasesA they put out 1 good artwork. The large amount of work is greatA for distribution sites, I had over fifty files in a VERY shortA period of time, but the artwork was horrible. Fortunately,A STRiKE did not advertise all over the place and become a bigA irritation like TNT and RPM, however they still did this to some degree.A The moral of this story? Don't make your own ANSiA group. If you belong in one, try and join one of the alreadyA established ones, and if you are turned down, do not make yourA own. Let's face it, if you can't make it into a group like RPMA with your efforts, you suck. I for one am sick and tired ofA looking at all of these lamer group adds, and I am sure manyA others are as well. Do us all a favor, go out and buy a1 coloring book or paint by numbers and have fun. What's up with iCE?Black Spyrit [iCE]A A lot has been happening lately with iCE, a lot of rumorsAand tales going around. In this short time span a lot of phone calls were madeA while members, dist sites and couriers were inducted,A strategies were planned, a management staff was formed, andA the USA name was created. USA stands for United SoftwareA Association. It is a totally generic group name, we agree,A but when we formed USA in this short time we already had aA release in hand and wanted to get it out quickly, so we didn'tA spend a whole hell of a lot of time thinking about what toA call ourselves. Plus we liked the catchy three letter comboA of USA so we went with it. The "USA" title just has a way ofA growing on you, so even if you don't like it now, give it someA time, you will get used to it. I think we spent all of aboutA a half hour on deciding the group name and spent the rest ofA the twelve hours on more productive things. The name of aA group isn't what makes the group anyway, it's what the group6 releases that counts, as I'm sure you'll all agree.A USA's senior staff consists of The NotSoHumble Babe, Silencer,A and myself. There is no president or dictator in this group.A There are just three senior staff members who all consult oneA another and reach an agreement before making any decisions.A The primary organizer of USA is The NSH Babe, formerly knownA as The Humble Babe. The NSH Babe had been with THG for quiteA a long time and I won't go into details, but as a result ofA some conflicts of interest within THG, The Humble Babe andA about 10-15 other members, member boards and distributionA sites were removed from THG. Why did THG drop so many peopleA at once? I really don't know the TRUE reasoning behind thisA decision, but I will not speculate on the rumors I haveA heard. It happened, and that's that as far as I amA concerned. But, whether it was justified or not, I did notA find it too cool the way the situation was handled. This,A coupled with other factors led me, a few others and most of) the couriers to quit THG and join USA.A When deciding to join USA in the early hours of the birth ofA the group, I saw that they already had a top-notch list ofA members and boards behind them, and a great amount of ambitionA and determination to become one of the best. I was offered aA Senior Staff member position in the group, and since I had aA lot of experience and ideas which I felt could be used to helpA USA excel in their endeavors I felt that this would be a greatA opportunity to get involved. The challenge of starting aA crack group from the ground floor and making it a realityA appealed to me. It would be hard work, but with the effortsA of our talented and diversified list of members I knew we could go far.A As it turned out, there was a Euro Amiga Group trying to breakA into the American PC Scene about the same time as USA wasA forming. This group is known as Fairlight, and its founderA and president is Strider. We hooked up with Fairlight and weA are basically acting as Fairlight's PC Division, but with anA identity and management staff that is all our own. StriderA will be supplying us with Euro-PC originals once in awhile,A and trying to set up more PC contacts for us in Europe.A Strider has already come through with a couple of games forA us, 7 Colors and The Immortal, and is working on many more.A Fairlight has been around for many years and Strider startedA it back in the old C-64 days. It is a group that has beenA going strong on the C-64 and Amiga scene for quite some timeA now, and should be doing well on the PC scene once things get
set up.A USA's first release was Spellcasting 2o1 Beta. We got a lotA of feedback about this ware, some good and some bad. TheA pirate world seems to be divided 50/50 when it comes toA betas. About half of the comments we received were pro-beta,A the other half were anti-beta. We don't really see a problemA with releasing beta wares. We make every effort to depict theA ware as being a beta, such as with the Spellcasting release weA put a B in every filename, we put a BETA in every fileA description, we named the .nfo file S201BETA, and we wrote aA paragraph of explanation in the nfo file as well. This wasn'tA enough for some people, apparently, because once the wareA started getting spread by non-USA couriers, some peopleA uploaded it without putting BETA in the file descriptions andA this pissed a few people off after downloading it, thinking itA was a release and then finding out it was only a beta. All IA can say is that we have nothing to hide, we went out of ourA way to show everyone that S2o1 was Beta, and those who do notA pay attention to filenames or take a brief moment to do a zip6 view on a file shouldn't feel like they were duped.A USA's second release was some documentation for SpellcastingA 2o1 Beta, and our third release was a Demo of the latestA upcoming SSI game, Shadow Sorcerer. I think it's interestingA to see a sneak preview of a new and long-awaited game via aA demo and I especially like playable demos. A lot of times weA get demos of wares we are expecting to put out so we'll putA the demo out to give people an idea of what the game will beA like. This way people can decide whether or not it will beA worth their time to download the game when it does come out.A Not many other groups seem too interested in putting demosA out, perhaps they think it's lame or cheezy. But we're goingA to try it for awhile and if we get a good response we'll= continue, a bad response and we'll quit putting demos out.A Our fourth release was our first major release - Might AndA Magic ]I[. We got off to a slow start with a beta and a demo,A and I'm sure a lot of you said "Shit, I bet betas and demosA are the best they can do." Well if you were one of thoseA people I'm sure the MM3 release was quite a pleasant surpriseA for you. We enjoyed putting it out and by doing so, hopefullyA we proved ourselves to the pirate world that we are not someA fly-by-night organization. And if that didn't convince youA well then I'm sure the next release, Leisure Suit Larry 5A did. This has been one of our largest and most popularA release to date, but still, the fact that we released it# uncracked caused a few problems.A The problem with Larry 5 is that it had one of the mostA difficult copy protection schemes ever put into a game.A Sierra has a notorious reputation for making difficult toA crack copy protection, and this release was no exception.A We've heard that practically every major group, INC, THG, PEA and TRSI/TDT were trying to crack this and no one was able toA until 4 or 5 days later when this dude Eldar from VisionA Factory put out a nice little crack for the game. I'd like toA congratulate Eldar, by the way, for his excellent work on thatA crack. It was really a great achievement and earned him someA well-deserved recognition. We would have liked to have him onA our team but he was recently picked up by Razor 1911, IA believe. In any case I think he's a great cracker and I wish< him luck in his endeavors with whatever group he chooses.A In the meantime while everyone was waiting on a crack, SCD-DoXA put out some scanned doc check codes for Larry 5 which enabledA most people to play the game through. Most people realizeA that Sierra copy protection is a total bitch to crack, andA have been quite understanding of why we put it out uncracked.A A few people made a big stink over the uncracked Larry 5, butA they didn't know any better. No group will sit on a ware forA 4 or 5 days trying to crack it, while knowing some other groupA is just going to put it out uncracked anyway. With a game asA large as Larry 5 it takes 4 or 5 days to get thoroughA distribution anyway, so what is the point of waiting. We'reA better off getting the ware out to the public, getting creditA for the release, and then working on the crack. If you don'tA agree with that, well I don't know what to tell you, exceptA that's the way it is and has been for quite awhile. We'reA just playing by the same rules that have been established forA years, and that's, 'He who gets it out first wins'. If aA group would hold a game like LSL5 for 4 days while crackingA it, or release a game like LSL5 right away, but uncracked,A then put out a crack 4 days later, what is the difference?A You get the cracked game at the same time either way, don'tA you? At least in the case of a huge Sierra game like LSL5A being put out right away, you at least have time to downloadA it and distribute it while waiting for the crack to be put out. It makes sense.A We followed Larry 5 with some dox and hint releases, thenA Wordtris, then a couple of Euro games, 7 Colors and TheA Immortal. Then we put out some more pretty huge games, PoliceA Quest 3 and Willy Beamish. Police Quest 3's protection wasA integrated as part of the game play, and made it notA worthwhile to crack, for to do so would probably ruin the wayA the game was intended to be played. Willy Beamish had a docA check at the near-end of the game. Fortunately we were ableA to put out a patch for it before anyone even discovered theA doc check. It seems that these game companies, especiallyA Sierra and Dynamix are getting more and more clever with theirA copy protection schemes with each new release. People areA going to have to learn to be a bit more understanding withA crack groups due to these increasingly difficult copyA protection schemes. Sometimes these games will have to beA fixed, or won't be able to be cracked at all, but you can beA sure the games will be followed up with some form ofA documentation to get you past the protection. Hey, it's freeA software, so why bitch about it? Crack groups do their best,A and are only human, and we should respect and understandA that. There's one thing you can count on, though, we have 3A very experienced and well-known crackers in USA: R. BubbaA Magillicutty, Lord Blix and Harry Lime. When we releaseA games, they go to our crackers first, and if it's not someA crazy Sierra protection or a doc check at the end of the game,A the ware will be cracked before we put it out. We'veA successfully cracked every non-Sierra game we've put out, so, cracking is not a problem for this group.A Well that's about it as far as what we've put out since USAA was created less than a month ago. For being around for suchA a short time we think we've done pretty well, and we'll hope
you agree.A Another thing about USA is that we won't knowingly orA intentionally double release another groups ware. There haveA been a few instances where we have received our copy of a gameA only a few hours after another group had released their ownA version of the ware. The two times I can recall thisA happening were with Millennium 22oo and Corporation U.S.A Version. When we get a new ware we check a few of the topA boards to make sure it has not been released yet. If it hasA been released we will not double release it. We will justA settle for putting out the dox instead, as we did with both ofA these wares. We just feel it's pointless to double releaseA another group, and we wouldn't want another group doing it to/ us, so we try our best to avoid such things.A I'd like to introduce all of our members to you now andA explain what we all do at USA/FLT. Senior Staff has many, many dutiesA and responsibilities, and oversees the release of a new wareA from beginning to end. We are basically all on the same levelA of power, and we are all "in charge" of the group. There isA no president or ruler of the group. The senior staff membersA all try to discuss things together and make joint decisionsA together on all things which affect the group. moment the idea of this group was conceived to theA moment when we put out our first release took around twelveA hours.
With the release of iNSANITY #1, a lot ofApeople starting talking about what was the "best" mag around.)Some said iNSANITY, some said SCD, etc. A The result of people's proclamations of the "best mag" wasAthat some people who are members of one mag group or another Adecided to get pissed off if their mag wasn't the one that peoplewere saying was the best.A In this article, I'm going to address the useless:"competition" between the several mags that are out there.A First off, I'd like to say that the competition is reallyAvery stupid. What need is there for competition between twoAmags? It's not like someone is going to have to choose betweenAdownloading two mags and thus, will only download the "best" one.=Most people read all the GOOD mags, not just the "best" one. A I don't know if I'm conveying my point, but what I'm sayingAis, why compete when there is no need to think of your mag as theA"best"? Let the people decide who has the best mag. Just keepAyour mag good, and people will read it, even if they don't regardit as "the best".1 ...LoP...
