When dust grains encounter a plasma, electric charge builds up on them, which affects their behavior and in turn the behavior of the plasma. In particular, regions within plasmas used in industrial processes can become a trap for dust grains, where electrostatic forces, gravity and drag forces balance one another and leave the grains suspended. Los Alamos researchers are using lasers to study these trapped grains as part of an effort to develop a better overall understanding of the basic physical processes related to dusty plasmas. The trapped grains can be a major source of contamination during etching of silicon wafers, for example. The research could also help scientists better understand celestial phenomena such as comet tails, planetary rings and particles in Earth's ionosphere, other situations where dust and plasma combine. STRIPPING GEARS ßßßßßßßßßßßßßßß By Kathy DeLucas, LANL PIO Common, everyday gears - made by the millions every year - suffer a failure rate during manufacturing that can be as high as 30 percent. Los Alamos researchers are using three-dimensional modeling on a Cray supercomputer to predict stress and distortion that results from heat treating the gears as part of the manufacturing process. Incorporating the physics associated with heat transfer, material phase transformations and mechanical stresses into a single calculation is pushing the frontiers of computational modeling, the researchers say. The project also uses the Los Alamos Neutron Scattering Center and X-ray beams to measure directly residual stresses in manufactured gears, providing data with which to evaluate the computer models. GOING FISSION FOR SUPERCONDUCTIVITY ßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßß By James Rickman, LANL PIO Scientists at Los Alamos' Superconductivity Technology Center have demonstrated that bombarding a commercially prepared superconducting tape with high-energy protons greatly improved the tape's performance at liquid nitrogen temperatures. The protons caused bismuth nuclei in the tape to fission and produce heavy fragments, which in turn created columnar tracks throughout the superconductor. These special structural defects helped stabilize currents at higher temperatures in the superconducting material. Proton bombardment could be incorporated as a final step in manufacturing processes to improve the performance of devices made from superconducting materials. COMPUTER CODE AIDS CANCER CURES ßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßß By Kathy DeLucas, LANL PIO A Los Alamos computer code has proven successful for aiding cancer treatments that make use of beams of radiation to kill tumors. Cancer treatment planning, radiation diagnostics, treatment beam design and radiation protection can all be improved by the Monte Carlo Code for Particle Transport, originally developed for the weapons programs at Los Alamos. The code is capable of modeling complex geometries in three dimensions with different material densities. Los Alamos researchers believe their code could be improved still further to operate faster and provide doctors specific instructions on appropriate cancer treatment doses, angles, and types. The most vocal in the newsgroups, lately, are the get-rich-quick, pyramid-scam crowd. Internet's Usenet newsgroups sport frequent advertisements for making money through chain letters and multi-level marketing pyramid schemes. These schemes often involve you getting the message, which contains a list of names. You send your cash to the name at the top. Then you copy the message to your text editor, take off the top name and put your name at the bottom. Then you send the message to all your little friends in Internet-land. You'll never get any money, nor will you get your cash back. But by golly, you tried! You nitwit! The multi-level marketing schemes on the world's largest computer network look like the usual Amway-A.L. Williams-Shaklee Vitamins pyramid deals. So THIS is what they mean by 'Internet For Idiots'! These pyramids have you buy a starter kit for a $100 or more. Later you commit to a monthly stipend of grossly overpriced products or services, totalling $100 or more a month. If you don't commit on your own, they get you to attend regular cult-like meetings where liars parade before you how they went from disease-ridden social outcast to wealthy, arrogant bastard in a very short time with the pyramid scam. The meetings involve a lot of emotional outbursts and Satanic-sounding chants. You start in with the pyramid and try to make back what you've lost buying all this crap by signing up all your friends and relatives to get the same wallet-whipping you just took. The schemes often are advertised throughout the Internet by SPAMming: A process where most, if not all, Usenet groups -- from Alt.Parents.Teens to Alt.Sex.Fetish.Diapers -- suffer saturation bombing with same or similar get-rich-quick messages.
