The Dark Side of the Net...

                            Issue #4

                         updated 12/01/94

              List maintained by carriec@eskimo.com
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

This is a list of gothic, wiccan, pagan, vampire, occult, and
various other dark resources available on the Internet. The list
includes IRC channels, mailing lists, ftp sites, newsgroups,
gophers, and E-zines.

PLEASE DO NOT REPOST THIS TO ANY USENET NEWSGROUPS!

Please send additions/corrections ASAP. This list is normally
updated quarterly, but if I get enough pertinent info sooner, the
list will come out more often.

Please note: A very small handful of pagans are upset with my
including of pagan resources in this guide. They object to the
use of the word "dark" in reference to paganism, stating (quite
correctly) that paganism is in no way Satanic, nor negative (as the
word "dark" might imply) and point out that paganism is a positive,
life-affirming religion. While I in no way wish to offend any pagans,
I will not allow a tiny minority to dictate to me what I include on MY
LIST. If you don't like it, don't read this list, or go make your own
list or something. What it boils down to (bubble, bubble.. :) is that
many of the 1200 readers of this list are BOTH pagans and gothics, or
are interested in vampirism AND the occult, and various other combinations
of all the interests represented by this list. Stripping out all references
to paganism from this list would deprive my gothic, vampiric, and other
readers from good information about where to find paganism stuff on the Net.

MAILING LISTS
------- -----

Generally, you e-mail the list, with "subscribe <listname>
<yourname@host>" in the text. Example "subscribe dark-
shadows carriec@eskimo.com". Some listserv automated lists want you
to subscribe with this format "subscribe listname-l Your Real
Name". Please remember to send subscribe or unsubscribe messages to
the list address with the -request or the name-l, or to the listserv,
not to the list. Send submissions to the list (what you want all the
other subscribers to see) to the list address without the -request.
Please remember that all these lists are FREE; no one is profiting
from them. The people maintaining them do so in their spare time,
out of their generosity, and they are under no obligation to
subscribe you just because you ask. Be nice! :) If you don't get a
response from a list after about three days, email the list again
(your request might not have gotten there.) If you dont hear back,
wait another week or so (someone might be on vacation) and write
back a NICE message inquiring as to if the list is still available.
If you don't hear back, or if you hear the list is down, please
email me and I will remove it from the list. Please remember to be
patient!

generally arrive more frequently, and contain messages from the
other subscribers.

MISC INFO
---------

"A Mage's Guide to the Internet" by Frater I Nigris
(tyagi@houseofkaos.abyss.com) is a great resource on Magick,
mysticism, and occultism on the Net. Lots of mailing addresses, ftp
sites, and gopher info. It's available by ftp at: netcom.com
/pub/alamut/mageguide, or quartz.rutgers.edu /pub/occult/mages-
guide, or from gopher at Clearinghouse of Subject Oriented Internet
Resource Guides (UMich).

MUDS/Mushes
-----------

Following is a list of Multi User Dungeons and related role playing
games on the Net, which might tend to have a gothic flavour. This
is highly subject to interpretation, of course, so explore at your
own risk. My opinion of if a mud is gothic or not will most likely
differ from many other people's. If you try a mud and it doesn't
seem gothic enough for you, then don't play it, and go find another
one. :) I've tried to include mainly Muds that echo standard gothic
themes (Vampires, graveyards, dark places). I included Medievia,
for example, even though it's set in the Middle Ages, because it
has a lot of dark places (graveyard, temples, caverns) and because
you can die there, and death is soooo gothic. (grin).

Awakening Mush: 192.33.116.67 9999
Theme: Pennsylvania, Fort Duquesne. White Wolf(tm) system. Mage:
     The Ascenscion.

City of Darkness Mush: 130.88.240.110 2000
     Theme: Another WhiteWolf(tm) themed game.

CryptMush: 128.205.3.103 7171
Theme: A world of gothic horror. Loosely based on RavenLoft(tm).

The Damned Mush: 128.2.21.7 6250
Theme: White Wolf's(tm) Storyteller gaming system. Gothic, Pittsburgh.

Edge of Darkness: edge.uccs.edu 2001 - Medievalish, but not very gothic or
dark. dunno why I list it here. I guess I just like it. :)

Medievia Diku Mud: intense.netaxs.com 4000.
Theme: Medieval. This features over 6000 rooms to explore, purchase
and decoration/description of a home, (but no building opportunities),
player kills, monster kills, accumulation of gold, jewelery, spells,
potions, armour, weapons, bridal veils and other assorted goodies.
Places to visit include temples, caves, a Labyrinth, a castle, a
graveyard, a mauseoleum, and streets with shops. Players here are
pretty friendly and helpful, which makes me think this really
isn't a very dark mud after all. :) This features ansi color.

Vampire: The Masquerade phobos.unm.edu 4444
