How to send UFgate mail to users on UUCP

Some of you have heard of the UFgate project which makes it possible to send
mail from FidoNet to users on uucp (or Internet) systems. The goal of the
project is to get a UFgate in each FidoNet Net. The UFGATE software package (an
MS-DOS implementation of the uucp protocol plus utility programs for converting
"email" and "broadcast message areas" between FidoNet and uucp formats) was
recently released after running on beta test sites for over a year. The
FIDONET.ORG domain has been registered with the Internet overlords and
information about the FidoNet gateways & leaf nodes has been entered in the
appropriate nameservers. There is a UFGATE Echo Area where the authors of the
software and UFgate sysops work out problems.

It is now POSSIBLE to send mail from ANY FidoNet node to ANY uucp or Internet
user. It is easiest and CHEAPEST to do if your Net already has a UFgate that
can be reached via a local phone call.

Here is a sample session on an Opus BBS

NOTE A) The mail is addressed to the appropriate UFgateway. For Region 17 that
seems to be...
SPECIFIC GATEWAYS: 1:105/14 for Net 105
                      1:152/201 for Net 152
                      1:343/15 for Net 343
                      1:342/1 for Net 342
  DEFAULT GATEWAYS: 1:105/14 for Net 17 & 345
                      1:105/6 for Net 17, 134, 138, 153, 340, 344 & 345

Lee Damon at 105/302 is listed as a default gateway for Net 17, 134, 140, 152,
153, 340 342, and 344 ... but he is moving 02-Jan-89. That seems to leave Net
140 in limbo.

I extracted this information from the UFGATE listing update that Lee Damon
posted in the UFGATE Echo yesterday. I think I got it right, but I am an alien
Apple user person without a nodelist at my fingertips. Please check it for
accuracy.

Mail CAN be sent out via ANY UFgate (since the sender is paying the mail
charges). If you expect to get a reply, however, your best bet is to use the
designated UFgate. If other routes fail, send through David Dodell at 114/15.

NOTE B) The mail is addressed to uucp.

NOTE C) The uucp address of the recipient goes on the FIRST LINE of the body of
the message. DON'T FORGET TO TYPE IT IN ON REPLIES, too. Be sure to include the
proper "domain" extention ( .uucp, .BITNET, .ARPA or whatever).

If the uucp address is not located correctly, the mail will have to be handled
manually at the gate. In particular, you cannot update messages after they have
been entered because that procedure moves the uucp address down to the second
line.

The user@domain style address shown is the easiest to use. It is not
necessarily the fastest way to get your mail to a uucp destination. If you are
familiar with uucp bang paths, they can be used instead of the Internet format.
In the example shown, you could use...'To: reed!percival!bucket!lisag' (where
'reed' is the unix host that 105/14 connects to.

lisag@bucket.uucp is a real address. If you have nobody better to practice on,
be my guest.
