            JANET PAD listing - revision 1.8 - 6th October 1990

Hi everyone...

Here's a list of dial-up PAD's that will give you access to the JANET network!
Unless stated, these all use 7 data bits, even parity and one stop bit.
I've also given the baud rates where I know them (V21=300, V22=1200, V22bis=2400
, and V23=1200/75)

When you've got through to the PAD, you might get a 'Which Service?' prompt.
If so, type 'PAD<cr>'. Sometimes you'll need to hit <cr> a few times to get
a response from the machine.

Once you're at the 'PAD>' prompt (you might need to hit 'Return' a few times
to wake up the PAD), you can call any computer system on JANET by entering
'CALL xxxxxxxxxxxx', where 'xxxxxxxxxxxx' is the 12- or 14-digit network
address of the machine in question. Note that JANET will only get you as far
as the remote computer's login screen - from there on you are on your own and
will have to find/guess ID's and passwords...

To start you off, two excellent public-access systems exist on JANET that are
CRAMMED with info and useful clues for would-be hackers!

These are: JANET News Machine: 000050005002 (login as 'NEWS' - no password
                                                  needed)
                NISS Bulletin Board:000062200000

These two systems will give you plenty of starting points for possible hacks
(net addresses etc). But make sure that you're on a local call if possible -
before I found these PAD numbers, I spent 3 hours on a long-distance call to
the Janet News Machine!!!

Hope this info is of interest - if you have questions/comments/suggestions/
good passwords [ *8-) ] please leave a message for 'Boris' on any of the
following BBS's:

        Merlin: 0443-834179; V21/22/22bis/23; 8-n-1; 24h.
        GoobTel: 0602-706307; V21/23; 8-n-1; 24h.
        Awesome!!: 081-656-1517; V21/22/22bis/23; MNP-5; 8-n-1; 24h.
        PCB: 0639-871325; V21/22/22bis/23; 8-n-1; 11pm-8am.

One more thing - try calling 000010403000 - this is a PD software archive run
by Lancaster Uni. - they carry s/w for PC, ST, Amiga, BBC and (I think) other
machines as well. Eventually I'll put up a file on here going into more
detail...(by the way, you'll need to login with username 'pdsoft' and password
'pdsoft' - both in lower case)

Bye for now, and have great fun - I did!

Cheers, Boz

                   UPDATES WITH THIS REVISION (1.8):
                   ---------------------------------

Added the number for Hull Uni [0482-466301]. Another one that's been hanging
around for ages - I think Zak from HackerNet posted it, but not too sure now.

I can now also be reached at Awesome!! and PCB - see above for details. These
are new boards - give them your support!

Note that Magnum BBS isn't listed in this revision. After God knows how many
*huge* phone bills, I've decided enough is enough and cut back on BBSing.
Magnum is one of the boards I have stopped calling - the others I will still
use, but not as often. Leave any messages on Merlin if you can as that's the
board I use most often.

REVISION 1.7 (6 Sep '90)
Added the number for Leicester Uni [0533-470524]. It's now a long while since
I tried this one, so I can't remember what standards it uses, but V.22/22bis
definitely work. I got this number from a guy on HackerNet - I think it was
Andrew M but I'm not sure now. Sorry if I got it wrong!

Since I wrote the last edition of JPAD, two of my fave boards [HackerNet and
PBDN] have closed down - HN has dropped its hacking sigs and renamed itself
to STealth BBS, while the PBDN has closed down totally. You can still contact
me on Merlin or GoobTel though. [and now also Magnum]

REVISION 1.6 (28 May '90)
Hacked the introductory text about again [slight format change]
Added a new number [021-471-5189] for Birmingham - thanks to Buzz of HackerNet.

REVISION 1.5 (27 May '90)
Discovered a major cock-up in the dte address for Lancaster Uni's PD library!
I copied the wrong number off my notepad and so you all ended up with
UKC.SGATE instead of LANCS.PDSOFT! Have now changed the address to
0000 1040 3000!

Thanks to Paul S from HackerNet for pointing out the problem - I thought it
was a fault in UCL's PAD and was bashing my head against the wall *8-)

Seriously though - apologies *must* go to Paul and any other people who
might have been baffled by this!

Added a new number for Leeds: 0532-461513. Thanks to Bauderline of HackerNet!

The number I gave as being for Leeds Uni [0532-469646] is actually for Leeds
Poly! [thanks to Galt of HackerNet!] Standards are V.21/22/22bis/23 - use
CALL X.nnnnnnnnnnnn [where nnnnnnnnnnnn = JANET dte address.]

I can now also be reached at the Palm Beach Data Network - see above for
details. PBDN and HackerNet are the boards I call most often - msg me on
either of those if you can!

Durham Uni's PAD [091-374-2832] supports V.21/22/22bis/23 standards.

Glasgow Uni's PAD [041-334-8100] supports V.21/22/22bis standards.

Added four new numbers for Strathclyde Uni:

041-553-4156
041-553-4157
041-553-4158
041-553-4159

York Uni's 'V.21' PAD [0904-433826] is actually V.21/22/23; the 'V.23' PAD
on 0904-433827 is actually V.21/22/22bis/23.

Thanks to Galt of HackerNet [again!] for a stack of numbers - couldn't get
to JANET on them though! If we manage to make them work I'll put them in a
future version of this list...

[wow - a lot of changes this time - and only five days after the last
revision!]

REVISION 1.4 (22 May '90)
Spaced the list entries out to make them more readable.

The entry for 'Daresbury Uni' is actually for the Daresbury Labs - a trivial
point maybe, but if it's wrong, change it!

Added three new numbers for Birmingham Uni: 021-471-2167 (V21/23)
                                            021-471-5188 (V21/22)
                                            021-471-2109 (V21)

Added new numbers for:

Aberdeen Uni: 0224-645888
Bath Uni: 0225-448898
Leeds Uni: 0532-469646
Oxford Uni: 0865-736352 [thanks to Tam from HackerNet for these four!]

I can now also be reached at the HackerNet and Merlin BBS's. [see above for
details]

After badgering by users of this list [ *8-) ], I am now in the process of
writing a PSS tutorial - watch out for it in a hackers' sig near you!

Did any of you spot the cock-up in JPAD13? Yep - I revised the file and forgot
to change the header lines - so they stayed at JPAD12! Sorry for any confusion
this might have caused!

REVISION 1.3 (21 April '90)
Added Leeds Uni's PAD (0532-461514).
Changed the line format slightly to squeeze in more comments.
Changed the format of the introductory notes to make them more readable (!)
Changed all London 01 codes to the new 071/081 format.

REVISION 1.2 (1 Mar '90)
Another name change - to JPADxx.TXT. Hopefully this is easier to type - and
leaves me a bit of room for extending the filename if necessary!

ULCC's V23 node (071-831-6181) is actually 8-N-1 and not 7-E-1 as listed in
previous revisions.

The PAD's which I have actually tested and found to work OK are now marked
with asterisks (*).

In the introductory note, I have now mentioned the systems that prompt 'Which
Service?' instead of dropping straight into the PAD. Hopefully this will sort
out a few problems people might be having.

REVISION 1.1 (18th Feb '90)
Lancaster Uni's PAD actually uses 8 bits, no parity, one stop bit instead of
7-E-1! Apologies for the error...

No more mistakes detected so far...!

Cheers, Boz
