VIEW allows you to read ASCII, Wordstar, WordPerfect (4.2 through 5.1, including Windows) and Microsoft Word (including Word for Windows) files, and to all or part of them to file or printer. QVU is a scaled-down version of VIEW; it only allows viewing of ASCII files and it lacks the printing capabilities of VIEW. Both programs allow you to search for case-sensitive text strings. MODVU50 and MODQVU allow you to customize display colors for VIEW and QVU respectively; MODVU50 also allows you to customize the printing capabilities of VIEW. *** IMPORTANT *** The author makes no warranty that the software in this package will work with your particular hardware configuration. Now to the fun stuff! ************************************************** VIEW and QVU Using these programs is pretty straightforward, and the interface is essentially the same. Pressing F1 brings up a help menu, and the key features of the menu are permanently displayed on the bottom line. Note that both programs read as much of a file as possible into memory, but if not all of a file can be read in they won't display the full file. This allows you to skip instantly to any part of the file in memory without disk reads. Depending on how much conventional RAM you have installed and how many TSRs you have running, you should have no difficulty reading in up to 400kb of text - and believe me, that's one big file! If you are not using DOS 5.0 or a memory manager such as QEMM386, I strongly recommend you do so. Note that if you have WordPerfect files with embedded graphics, the file size may be substantial - not to worry, VIEW will automatically bypass the graphics information, which would be stored in an enormous header preceding the text. MODVU50 and MODQVU These programs produce files called VIEWSET.50 and QVUSET.UP respectively, which are read when VIEW or QVU are loaded and override the default color schemes. You should ensure that the 50 and UP files are stored in a directory that is referenced by your AUTOEXEC.BAT PATH statement. However, if you wish to have different versions of your color scheme in different directories, just place the specific 50 or UP file in the directory you want. Setting colors is self-explanatory. However. MODVU50 also allows you to set some print parameters, such as number of lines per printed page, number of spaces to expand tabs, and number of spaces to leave for the left margin. MODVU50 also allows you to choose whether the "delete file?" feature of VIEW is activated. As a safety measure, the default is delete off. You can override this through VIEWSET.50. Even with the feature on, a file will not be deleted until you have answered an "are you sure?" question. In MODVU50 you can also set the default file type. VIEW will automatically detect WordPerfect 5.0 and later and Microsoft Word formats. However, you can override by using the appropriate switch settings. To see these, just type VIEW followed by a non-existent file name. It is suggested you set your default at ASCII, unless you wish to read mostly Wordstar or WordPerfect 4.2 files (which VIEW does not automatically detect). **** NOTE ***** I have attempted to cover every possibility for reading and decoding WordPerfect's file structure, but if you find that VIEW is not properly displaying a WordPerfect document, please send me a copy of the file along with the version of VIEW you are using (see the help menu), and I will attempt to resolve the problem and send you back an updated version of VIEW. Owing to the tortuous complexities of WordPerfect document file structures, I cannot guarantee that I'll be able to resolve the problem - however, I have been able to resolve all difficulties I've come across so far.
