Marx would have starved if it weren’t for Engels, who’s father was a wealthy textile maker. financially saved by Engels Marx continued writing journalism and corresponding with radicals across the globe. IV.MARX’S WORKS -the communist manifesto-written for the communist league by Marx and Engels during the 1840’s. explained briefly the communist system. -Das kapital- “the capital” the complete recordings of marx’s economic ideas and philosophies. outlined modern communism/Marxism in complete detail, not trying to make it easy to understand. published in 1859 this book had been written during a period of 14 years. it is said that Marx read literally every modern economic book or journal that had been written to prepare for this book. V.BASIC BELIEFS AND PHILOSOPHY AS IN DAS KAPITAL -Das Kapital is not so much a economic guide as it is a philosophical, ethical guide to life in general, using economics as a base. -central idea of Marxist thought is that is the materialistic conception of history. this conception revolves around the economic institution at any given time (e.g. communism or capitalism). the first basic idea is that an economic system at any given time determines the prevailing ideas.the second is that history is an ongoing process, regulated and determined by the economic institutions which evolve in regular stages. in other words, whatever is happening in society is a result of the current economic state, and those states change regularly and predictably. ( note that these ideas contradict those of Hegel.) - institutions shape ideas. - Capitalism is inevitably the final institution before communism. - the perfect society is one with no social classes, only a working class, a society with no inequalities or exploitation. - at the final end of the evolution of institutions the entire process will cease and there will be no more social struggles ( war ) * This idea of a ending utopia has been criticized as absurd and both scientifically and politically impossible--- yet Marx’s message provided millions with hope and new meaning in life. VI. THE END -JENNY- died at age 67 in June 1881- Marx never recovered from this blow. -KARL-excessive smoking, wine drinking, and constant state of stress were contributing factors to his illness in later life. Marx suffered from liver disease, teeth problems, skin ailments, eye immflamations, and various other illnesses in later life, he was forced to take drugs to sleep at night due to headaches and a persistent cough. for the last 12 years or so of his life he was unable to do any sustained intellectual work. Karl died on march 14,1883, about 2 months before his 65th birthday.
