[report on the Lord of the Rings, by JRR Tolkein. It's in a cheesy paragraph format, but that's the way my teacher wanted it.. hope you can make use of it!] The protagonist of this story is surely Frodo, the main character in this book. My sympathies lie with him because he is on a mission, a mission against evil. The antagonist is most likely the Black Riders, and the evil that is spreading over the land. It is late at night, on a dirt road just outside of Bag-end. The air is crisp and cool, and the moon shines brightly down on the travelers. The stars are unusually thick and bright tonight. As they walk on, past the silent, motionless plains, the last light from a distant farm fades out of sight. Frodo, the main character in this novel, is an adventurous young Hobbit. He is short, as are all Hobbits, and very agile. He has a round, bright face and a moderately built body. He is very quick thinking and cunning, yet friendly and courageous. Gandalf, the wizard, is very different. He is tall and crooked, but still quick moving. He has long gray hair, and is always carrying a walking stick. He is well-respected among other wizards, and is considered one of the noblest around. Like almost all wizards, he is intelligent and quick-tempered. He is a good deal of common sense, and is quite good at magic. This is a very long story, and quite a few things happen. It all starts out with Bilbo Baggins' 111th birthday. He has a very large birthday celebration, and invites many friends and relatives. He ends it all off with a flashy exit, and is not to be seen in Bag-end for a long ,long time. Before he departs, he leaves his magic ring to Frodo, his cousin. Frodo lives for a few years in Bag-End, until Gandalf the wizard appears. Gandalf tells Frodo all that he has learned about the ring on his journey. The wizard found out all the powers of the ring, and that it is very dangerous. So, Frodo starts out on a journey to destroy the ring. He travels with his friend, Sam, and his relative, Pippin. They encounter some men fully clothed in black, riding on horseback. After allot of traveling, and allot of perils, Merry Brandybuck joins the party. In the Old Forest, They meet Tom Bombadil and Goldenberry, who turn out to be very helpful. They travel for quite some time together, until they get to Bree. Most all of their secrets are revealed to the people of Bree, and they need the help of a Ranger called Strider. Strider knows many, many things, and helps them along their journey. They go to see Elron, and they meet up with Bilbo. They move on, and fight the wraiths again, but this time they came out victorious. They have to go through mines to get past a mountain range, and they are again attacked there. After they finally get through, they reach Lothlorien. The evil force tries to steal the ring from them, but without success. The Fellowship finally breaks up, and the story is really never concluded (That's why there are 2 more books in the series!) I think most everyone in the party hardened up through the story. In the beginning, they all seemed a little wimpy and weak, but they really got tougher and more courageous during the end. I think it was all the perils they faced that toughened them up. I believe that there are a few types of conflict in this book - Man vs. Man, Man vs. Nature, and Man vs. the supernatural. Frodo has conflicts with other Hobbits, men, etc. (man vs. man). He also has conflicts with the weather, the mountains, the trees, and the terrain (man vs. nature). The final one is Frodos conflict with Sauron, and the evil that is spreading over the land (man vs. the supernatural). The title of this book, The Fellowship of the Ring, relates to the plot because of the way that many people are fighting for the ring, and how a few people are trying so hard to keep it out of evil hands. If I had to choose a title, I suppose it would be The One Ring, because the entire plot of this book has to do with a single ring that is very powerful. I didn't learn much from this novel - Only that I wish that there were still Hobbits and dragons and wizards around. I also found out that you have to keep trying hard to reach your ultimate goal. I liked this book a whole lot. It has allot of action, adventure, and fantasy. It really makes me wish I could be on a quest to destroy a magic Elven ring. All of the characters are vividly described, and I feel as if I know them.
