A Journey to the Centre of the Earth Have you ever been curious about something? Of have you had a question where you just had to know the answer? Well this is what happened to Professor Hardwigg in A Journey to the Centre of the Earth. One day, Hardwigg finds an old paper written by an Icelander. In this paper it stated if you descend in a certain volcano in Iceland, then it would take you to the center of the earth. Professor Hardwigg is immediately intrigued by this paper so he, and his nephew Harry set off for a tremendous Journey towards the center of the earth. When they arrive in Iceland, Hardwigg and Harry find out that the volcano that will take them to the center would be a mount Sneffel. They hire a guide named Hans and begin their descend into the gigantic mountain. After a few days of travel, the group's water supply runs thin, and as they continue, they get more and more thirsty and dehydrated. Hardwigg and Harry were so desperate and weak, that they fall to the ground. Meanwhile Hans goes into the caverns, and luckily heard signs of water. A few hours later, they finally drink. One night, deeper into the caves, Harry decides to do a little exploring by himself. As he wanders through the tunnels he realizes that he is lost, and as he tries to get back, he wanders even further until finally he was 5 miles apart from his uncle, and Hans. While he was walking further, he hits his head on a rock and gets knocked out. When Harry finally awakens, he finds himself reunited with his uncle and Hans by an underground sea. Hans builds a raft and they start sailing across it. During this ride, they all notice that the sea was filled with prehistoric extinct animals. Among these that they witnessed were giant turtles, and a fight between two mighty sea monsters. As they drifted further, a terrible storm occurs, and pushes them back to the same port where they started sailing. Harry and Professor Hardwigg were horrified and frustrated, but as they were these, they were even more determined. While Hans is fixing the raft, Harry and Hardwigg take a stroll down the beach. During this stroll, they find themselves on a sort of graveyard where bones are lying. This is where they witness the most surprising spectacle of their journey, a prehistoric man. This enormous being was about 12 feet tall, very strong, and not fully formed. Harry and Hardwigg immediately run back to the raft astonished. After Hans fixed the raft, they sail off again. This time, however, they find a beach to land on, in the other side of the ocean. There was one more task remaining to continue, they had to move a huge rock in order to pass. To do this, they decide to blow it up with their gunpowder. They set this up, and out in sea, they ignite it. Suddenly, the raft was pulled with great force, the explosion created an abyss. They were in horrible raging waters for many hours until they awoke. After they were all awake, the professor pointed out that they were ascending at a tremendous rate. They also noticed that there was hardly any food left for their journey. After days of starving, and suffering, they noticed that the temperature was rising, and the water was starting to turn into lava, they were in the middle of a volcano eruption. A few hours past before they were shot out of another volcano, which they later found was on mount Stromboli next to Sicily, Italy. Professor Hardwigg later became famous for this amazing journey, and known to both believers and non-believers in him throughout the world. I believe the theme of A Journey to the Centre of the Earth is that if you have a goal that you believe in, then never give up to accomplish it. Do not let any distractions get in your way. Professor Hardwigg didn't let hunger, thirst, or any other bad condition get in his way of getting to his unbelievable goal.
