Life in Iran is very similar too what we discussed in class. In the movie Betty is married to an Iranian who is a doctor. They have a child named Matob. Betty's husband Mooty treats Betty with a lot of respect. Mooty persuaded Betty to come with him to Iran to visit his family. He swears on the Koran that Matob and Betty will not be in any danger. In Iran women are treated like slaves. Mooty tells Betty that they are staying in Iran to live a few days after their arrival. Betty cannot leave then country without a letter of permission from Mooty, who of course will not give her permission. Mooty does not treat Betty the same way he did in America. He physically abuses her. She is not allowed to use the telephone or leave the house without permission. In class we discussed how women are treated in Muslim countries. Women are owned by their husbands. They have to tell their husband everything. Women are abused in all ways. A woman can be arrested for not covering every piece of hair on her head. Women are not permitted to continue their education above a certain level. Women are not allowed to eat with their husbands. After watching this film and our discussions in class I believe that Iran is a very sexist and primitive country. I was able to observe in the film that the people are religious fanatics. Dying is not feared because Muslim people feel that their after life is better than their life now. It is very sad how women are treated as second class citizens.
