Jimi joined several local rock groups.People that influluenced Jimis music were blues singers which includedMuddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and B.B King. Jimi went as far as sleeping with his guitar because some of his idols were known to do that. At sixteen Jimi left school with his dad's permission and joined the army the following year as a paratrooper. That career ended quickly after he got hurt on his 26 jump. He was discharged from the army. After Jimi Hendrix was discharged from the army he concentrated on his guitar. During the sixties Jimi Hendrix played the guitar for Ike and Tina Turner, Little Richard, and Jackie Wilson. He played under the name Jimi James. He started a new band called the Blue Flames. A guitarist by the name John Hammond Jr. heard Jimi in a night club in Greenwich Village. Jimi then joined Hammonds group. This lasted only a few weeks because Hammonds felt that Jimi was his own star. Former bassist for the Animals' convinced Jimi to go with him to Great Britain where music was getting very popular. In 1966 Jimi Hendrix moved to England. Chas Chandler promised Hendrix that he would meet Eric Clapton. Hendrix then had to find the perfect back up band. In three weeks the band known as the Jimi Hendrix Experience was formed. Hendrix's first single, "Hey Joe," rose to number six on the British charts in 1967. Hendrix and his band appeared on a British TV show and introduced their new single called, "Purple Haze," . Beatle Paul McCartney convinced Monterey Pop festival officials to invite Hendrix even though Hendrix did not even release his first album. He was a star in England but unknown in the United States. He became popular in the United States when he performed at the Monterey International Pop Festival in 1967 and instantly became a super star. In the same year The Jimi Hendrix Experience opened up for the Monkeys. In 1969 The Jimi Hendrix Experience went on tour. He canceled many shows to work on black church music. In May of 1969 Hendrix was arrested for the possession of Heroin. Jimi supervised the construction of his recording studio in New York City. Hendrix played in Woodstock in August 1969 with Billy Cox and Buddy Miles. He recorded an album with Billy Cox and Buddy Miles. The album is called The Band Of Gypsies which was released in early 1970. Jimi's original band then re-formed except Cox replaced the bass guitarist. Jimi and his band started recording at Jimi's new studio called Electric Lady Studios. Hendrix died September 18, 1970. He died in his sleep after taking sleeping pills. After Hendrix died more of his music wasa released. The albums released were Crash Landings and Mid Night Lightinings. Crash Landing went on to be on of the top ten albums. As stated in Contemporary Musicans Volume 2, "Hendrix will also be remembered as one of the most ripped-off and artistically abused artists of all time."
