Pacific Bell Public Packet Switching
------------------------------------

Description
--------------

Public Packet Switching is an economical method of
transporting data between a variety of input devices and
host computers. Users can access the system on a dial-
up or dedicated basis. Data transport speeds range from
1.2 to 56 kbps.

User data is sent from a terminal, PC or other device
over a dial up or dedicated facility. This data is
broken into packets that include address and error
checking information. The packets are individually
transmitted via the Pacific Bell Public Packet Switched
Network (PB PPSN) to the host location. Host computers
may also transmit data to any device connected to the
network via a dedicated facility.

Physical Interfaces
-----------------------

Physical interfaces include RS-232 for speeds up to 9.6
Kbps and V.35 for speeds up to 56K.

Connectivity
---------------

Users may also access other national and international
networks by accessing a Value Added Network (VAN) that
is connected to the PB PPSN using X.75 interconnection.
VANS connected to the PB PPSN are Sprintnet, AT&T
Accunet, and BT North America.

Features/Limitations
-------------------------

* Based on CCITT X.25 standards, which transmits data
   in packets of 128 octets

* Limited to maximum speed of 56Kbps

* Limited legally to provide only async to X.25, X.75
   protocol conversion

* Joint marketing partnership with Memotec/Teleglobe
allows one stop shopping for PADs, modems, CSU/DSUs

* Dial up access can be from public dial ports (owned
by PB) or your own private dial ports

* Both foreign exchange and Custom 800 access can be
   configured with private dial ports

* Dedicated access can be analog (3002 link) or digital
   (ADN, ISDN, DDOV link)

* For most dedicated interfaces, optional features
include permanent virtual circuits, fast select,
internal hunt groups for host access, closed user
groups, DTE backup, negotiation, reverse charge
acceptance, multiple logical channels and multiple
   data network addresses.

Diagnostics
--------------

X.25 networks have their own error checking and error
correction capabilities. In addition, the Pacific Bell
Network Control Center has highly trained technicians
that monitor the network and assist customers in
establishing service and in isolating interface/network
problems.

Availability
--------------

Currently available in selected offices in all Pacific
Bell Service Areas. Check with your Pacific Bell
Account Executive for the latest information,
particularly for ISDN Access to PB PPSN.

Intrastate service is offered on a contract basis;
tariff pending.

Advantages
--------------

* Prices for interconnection and intraLATA usage are
   lower than most VANs

* PB can be local traffic concentrator for handoff to
   the VANs

* Best suited for multipoint to point/multipoint
   applications

* Also better for short, bursty transactions rather
   than large bulk file transfers

* Since backbone network is owned and managed by PB,
   reduces customer network management expense

* Excellent Pacific Bell technical support

* Multiple access methods to lower local transport
   costs to user

* Integrated with other Pacific Bell services

* Better data integrity than pure dial up network

* System is extremely reliable with redundant nodes and
   facilities

* Error checking within the network

*  Predictable, minimal maintenance window

Applications
---------------

* Point of Sale: Terminal access for credit card or
   draft authorization

* Point of Service: Terminal access for any type of
   validation: Medical insurance, Car insurance,
Drivers license, Balance due, In-stock inventory,
   Calling Card from coin phone

* Telecommuting, home banking, access to information
   services

   quality, traffic, computer)

* Dial in access for field sales and customer service
   engineers

* Network for electronic mail, store/forward fax , EDI,
   electronic white pages
