Welcome to the first official B.O.C. Tfile. Hurrah. This file was pieced
together to encompass a variety of levels of skill with cross boxes in
order to aid and abet the hackers and phreakers of 313.

1.0 What is a 'can' and what can be done with it?

A 'can' comes in many forms, shapes and sizes. Some are small network
interface boxes commonly found on the exterior back wall of a residence
or business. Others are slim 3 foot tall green colored boxes, the size
of Cable TV junction boxes. Others are referred to as cabinets or green
bases and can be found throughout neighborhoods at curbside and are about
4-5 foot long and 3-4 feet high. Another 'can' that can be found in more
rural areas is a long slim silver box affixed to the side of a telephone
poll.

A cross box (as Bell refers to them as), can be useful to the phreaker
for making free calls on other people's lines, for setting up a mauve box
to make a mini PBX outdial for the phreak's line. For the advanced
hack/phreak, you could access a COSMOS hookup, and activate lines in the
can for your usage.

2.0 How do I access a 'can'?

A business or residential can is accessed by opening the interface box with
a 3/8" socket or 3/8" nut driver. A curbside greenbase may be accessed by
opening it with a 7/16" socket or 7/16" nut driver. A Bell worker actually
has a tool called a "Can Opener" that is a little yellow tool with a 3/8"
on one end and a 7/16" on the opposing end. These may be found at a local
Bell truckyard or ordered through Time Motion Tools.

3.0 Upon opening the box, what tools do I need and what may I do with
these lines?

Upon opening the interface box, you will need a test set to clip into the
phone lines which are represented by series of wires [cable pairs] with
one wire attached to one screw [terminal post]. Two terminal posts represent
one phone line.

Examples of test sets that may be used are T-25 (blue) and T-19 (red/orange).
The difference between these and a normal phone are slight. The lineman's
handset will have a red and a black (or green) wire running out of the base
which has two alligator clips with line spikes at the end. If you go to
Radio Shack, or Active Electronics, you will be able to but generic alligator
clips [usually without line spikes]. Also on the phone is a steel belt clip
which is to be attached to the repairman's toolbelt. The phone also
includes a mute button for eavesdropping on calls, a set of red and green
LEDs which represent polarity and reverse polarity. The best methods for
the innovative person are to either aquire one from Bell, card one from Time
Motion tools, or just get a plain Jane text file on Biege Boxes. To make a
biege box, basically all you do is to strip coating off of the 4 wire and
exposes bare wires. Once you are to this point, merely solder the wires to
alligator clips and test them. Use the red (ring) and green (tip) wires.

Basic old time word of advice for small installations is look at the wire
colors on the terminal posts and clip into the ring and tips and you should
[if active] get a dialtone.

Also, some of the newer handsets by Ameritech have more innovative features
usually becoming to h/p people, and usually have an extra series of 6
buttons, and for example one will have a built in lineman's access code,
in the typical equal access format of 10xxxx. If this code is found, it
means free unlimited calls for a long time, EVEN from the safety of your
own house.

As for all the confusing looking wire in the crossboxes, Bell uses only 10
colors of wires [red, green, black, yellow, white, purple, orange, slate,
------, ------]. These are used to enable the repairman to have the lines
color coded. Also, if you see any 'weird' numbers written in the can,
write them down. They are the cable pair map and a veteran h/p man can
interpret these. They will break down into different streets etc. At one
time I had a local can map of about 5-6 cities, and it was quite useful so
that you are aware that you are tapping into a line 3-4 blocks away, so
that there is no chance in the event the loser home owner picks up, that
he sees some joker tapped into the Bell box in front of his house.

I also suggest doing a Bell yard raid to stock up on goodies. If you are
able to obtain a company hardhat, a company jacket and a toolbelt, it is
your license to STEAL. It tells the home owner that you are NOT some joker
and you BELONG there. Helps to enable daytime can jobs.

Another goodie you can pick up from a Bell raid, or from Time Motion Tools
is an RF Detector. It is used to look for radio frequncy interference on
the lines. The RF Detector will look like a yellow tool with a speaker at
one end, and a probe at the opposite end. Another use for this is
eavesdropping, which may be cute if you have a couple phreaks together and
you are trying to spy on someone. Remember, if you clip into the line with
a handset and the person is on the phone, they can hear a voltage drop and
may get suspicious. The RF detector will not have a sharp voltage drop like
a handset and will blast out what is being said. [For a fun electronics
project, B.O.C. will soon attempt to build an RF Detector and post up the
schematics when it is finished.]
