The Function Keys are a vital part of the game play...
In the Flight Screen each key brings up a different menu or view..
This list will be broken down from each key, to the menu that it brings 
down and what the function keys do in that NEW menu or view..

While in Flight Sim Mode:  

F1:  Changes View Point
        You start off with a cock pit view.
        Hit F1 once and you will see behind you.
        Hit F1 again and you will be flying the ship from with a 
        rear perspective (you will see the rear of the ship in front of you).

F2:  Brings up a map of the Galaxy.
        While in this menu:
        F1:  Returns you to Flight Screen
        F2:  Brings up a map of the Solar System that you are currently in.
             While in this Menu:
                One option changes:
                F10:  Select destination or target, other Function Keys do not
                      Change
        F3:  Brings up Ship Status (Will be described later)
        F4:  Communications
        F5:  No Function
        F6:  Displays all planets in current solar system.  Click on a planet
                for status of planet, which includes space ports, habitation,
                etc...
        F7:  Zoom in on Galaxy Map
        F8:  Zoom out of Galaxy Map
        F9:  Map Display Options, such as names of planets, grid display, etc..
        F10: Large Scale Galaxy Map

F3:  Brings up Ship Status (same as Previously Mentioned)
        While in this Menu:
        F1:  Returns to Flight Screen
        F2:  Goes to Map of Solar System (same as previously mentioned)
        F3:  Your profile, this includes, criminal acts, military standing,
             and other personal info...
             While in this menu:
             F3:  Cargo List
           
F4:  Communications

F5:  No Function

F6:  No Function

F7:  Ship Control
        This Toggles between:  MANUAL CONTROL, ENGINES OFF, AND AUTOPILOT.
        NOTE:  Autopilot can only be selected after choosing a destination
               or Target.

F8:  No Function

F9:  Landing Gear Control
        Note:  If arrow is down, gear is not extended, if arrow is up, gear
               is extended...

F10: Display options while in space, includes Names of stars and such..

While flying the following keys are used:

A:  Go down

Z:  Pull Up

<:  Turn Right

>:  Turn Left

Enter (not on the key pad):  Increase speed

Right Shift:   Decrease Speed

Space Bar:  Fire Gun

In the flight screen mode there are a few on screen options...

You will see a series of arrows that look like this:

This is speed control.  The box is pause, if you click on it twice or hit 
ESCAPE you will bring up an options menu..

That big red circle on the screen in flight mode is your radar.  If you click 
once on it, you will bring up your missle menu.  Click on a missle to arm it
then click on the FIRE button to launch it.  Click on an empty spot on the 
missle display to return to the radar menu.

By the way, when on a planet's surface, F7 is the TAKE OFF button..
