I see from your message dated 17-Apr-90 that you have a
Rebecca French from Salisbury, Essex, Ma. I also have French
ancestors from Salisbury. On my line there is a Susannah French,
b 11 Dec 1720, d 1789. Her father's name was James French. I
don't know if they are related to your French line.

I was in Salisbury recently and visited a small colonial
burial ground. There were a number of French tombstones there,
but not your Rebecca or my Susannah or James. Next to a small
library where I hoped to get additional information
(unfortunately it was closed) I noticed a historic home that
belonged to John Sanders Yeoman c1640. I took a picture of it.
If you would be interested in receiving a copy send me an address
and I would be glad to send it to you.

Looking for parents of Josiah FRENCH b ca 1755 probably
Connecticut
later in Luzerne (now Wyoming Co) Pennsylvania. Do not have a death
date
or name of spouse. Had son Hosea FRENCH b 1783 probably in
Connecticut,
d 28 Nov 1868, Braintree, Wyoming Co. Penna. md Susannah CARNEY b
1788,
Luzerne Co, Penna. d 1866, Wyoming Co. Penna.

Possible that Josiah FRENCH fought in Rev. War. from
Connecticut. Wrote to National Archives and they wrote back
suggesting
I try looking at the state level. Does anyone know where these
records
are kept in Connectiuct? Does anyone have an address where I can
write?

        Thanks,

"Ens. Thomas d 2 Jan 1680." Other gleanings to consider:

Elizabeth,

To follow up on the information from Bernard Dawe. See Hoyt, "The Old
Families of Salisbury and Amesbury MA", p. 166 which note quotes:

"!Felt gives as settlers of Ip., Mr. Thomas French, 1635; Thomas French,
Jr., 1638; and John French, 1648; beside Edward French. A Thomas French
of Ip., "tailor," 1647. A wed. Susan French d. Aaug., 1658[Ip]. Will
of Ens. Thomas French, Sen., [the Thomas, Jr., of 1638?], of Ip.,
Aug., Sep., 1680, ment. wife Mary, sons Thomas, John, Samuel, and dau.
Mary Smith. He d. Aug. 8, 1680; wid. d. May 6, 1681. A Thomas French,
perhaps the son ment. in will, 1680, m. Mary Adams, Feb. 29,
1659-60[Ip], and had 7 chil. b. in Ip. 1661-'76. A John French, prob.
his bro., had 7 chil. b. there 1657-'73."

The note was referenced by a statement under Edward FRENCH, "He was of
Ipswich in 1637.!"

Hope this added info will help. I am not familiar with the identity of
'Felt', perhaps you are.

Saw your messages to Jack Chandler, Elizabeth Sun and George Page
about the FRENCH and PAGE families.
.
You mentioned William-1 FRENCH m Elizabeth SYMMES and said he
arrived in 1635 on the "Defense." One of my ancestors is Lt. William
French who came on the "Defence;" married (1) Elizabeth _________
and had four children born in England; married (2) Mary Lothrop
after 1668; died 20 Nov. 1681 in Billerica, Mass. I wonder if we
share the same ancestor and the source for his first wife's surname.
.
You also mentioned Dea. Robert Page who married Lucy Warde and lived
in Hampton, N.H., another possible ancestor of both of us.
.
I would be interested in sharing information on these and possibly
other ancestors any of us or others may have in common.

I have seen many messages lately on the FRENCH name. I have an
Elizabeth FRENCH b. 29 Sept 1665 in Braintree, MA who m. Jonathan
THAYER 13 Jul 1680 or 22 June 1679 in Mendon, MA. She died 3 Oct
1703 in Mendon, MA. Her parents may be John FRENCH b. abt. 1612
in Dorset, Eng.; m. 1641 to Grace______ in either Dorchester or
Braintree. He d. 6 Aug 1692 in Braintree and she d. 1 Feb 1680
in Braintree. She was supposedly his first wife. Any help on
this family would be greatly appreciated.

This is a repeat of a msg. sent early this month which I suspect never got
to you.

Re your msg. to Bernard Dawe of 4-4, I too have William FRENCH with the
folllowing info. Wife Elizabeth ae 30 with Francis ae 10, Elizabeth ae 6,
Marie ae 2 1/2 & John ae 5 mo. came in the "Defense", Jly 1635. John was
Bapt. by Mr. HOOKER in Camb. [The implication is that William was allready
here] Other Ch Sarah b (1) 1638, Jacob b 16 (11) 1639, Hannah b 1641 d
1646. Wife Elizabeth d 31 Mar 1668 and he m Mary Lothrop widow of John
Staerns 6 May 1669. They had Mary b. 3 Apr 1670, Sarah b 29 Oct 1671,

was divided 6 (10) 1687 between his widow and three daus. Mary (now SHARP),
Sarah and Hannah FRENCH.

I am descended from Sarah (b 1671) who m. Joseph CROSBY.

I also have a note that William was realted to Edward FRENCH b 1598 d 1674,
but I don't know how, from whom I am also descended.

The above would indicate that Jacob and John were brothers.

I would be interested in sharing information. My address is 861 Milmar
Road, Newtown Square, PA 19073.
