        Mary (1618/29-1693) m. Thomas SHERWOOD (1586-1655)

To this I can only add:
In Will of Thomas FITCH 1612-1704 he wrote in 1696 that one of his
heirs
was his daughter Ann now wife of John THOMPSON of Farmington. Stephen
HART, Jr. (Ann's first husband) was also from Farmington. This comes
from the write up on Thomas FITCH in "Families of Old Fairfield",
ca.1930, Donald L. Jacobus, page 205.
Farmington is 5 miles west of Hartford so is about 55 to 60 miles
north of Fairfield and Stratford.
In "New England Marriages prior to 1700", 1987, Clarence A.
Torrey, page 349 it shows: "Hart, Stephen(2) (-1689?) & (Ann FITCH),
m/2
John THOMPSON by 1696; b 1662; Farmington, CT". The b 1662 is the
birthdate of the first child (to Stephen and Ann). Farmington was a
residence for Stephen and Ann. I don't have the page on Thompson.
The
book is arranged by male names so Ann is not listed on the Fitch page.
This is good book, but cryptic. Good thing I copied the intro.
I was hoping to find out who the parents, siblings and children
of
this John THOMPSON were. Also I'm looking for more references on this
FITCH family.
     Jim.
PS. I'd like to look at that cemetery list of yours and other data
for
that area. If I send you a floppy would you mind sending it to me? I
also have dBase.

I have some handwritten notes of an Aunt who died, but they

<169>English Ancestors of the Fitches of Colonial Connecticut<170> is the
title of a new book, being published by Picton Press of Camden, Maine for
release September 1, 1990. The book traces the ancestry of the four Fitch
brothers who emigrated to Connecticut from Bocking, county Essex, England
in the 1600s.

An introductory chapter deals with the source of the Fitch name itself, the
earliest recorded persons to use the name, the myths that have grown up
about the family, and the probable source of the family coats of arms.
Then, six generations in Essex are detailed in as many chapters, beginning
with William of Wicken (born ca. 1400) and ending with Thomas of Bocking
(died 1632). The book also includes 72 maps and photographs, a genealogy, a
glossary of terms used in old English documents, transcriptions of a number
of deeds and wills, and a complete index of names and places.

Much of the book reads like a detective story, because as the author
discovered, some family lore is simply not true. For example, a <169>Fitch
castle in ye North<170> turns out to have been the invention of a 16th
century herald trying to impress a client. And far from being a
<169>baron,<170> the progenitor of the clan, William of Wicken, was a
tenant farmer who leased two acres from the manor of Widdington. In other
cases, earlier historians have simply erred in identifying various in
another case of mis-identification, the wrong Thomas Fitch of Bocking

was picked as the father of the immigrant brothers, in what the author
calls <169>Bocking up the wrong family tree!<170>

<169>English Ancestors<170> is the first of two volumes of <169>A Fitch
Family History,<170> designed to update the only other two-volume work on
the family, published sixty years ago. The second volume will deal with
the Connecticut colonists. Rev<->er<->end James Fitch was the first to
arrive in 1638, settling in Saybrook, Connecticut and later in Norwich and
Lebanon. His three brothers, Thomas, Joseph and Samuel all arrived about
1650, bringing along their widowed mother. Thomas Fitch lived in Norwalk,
Joseph in Windsor, and Samuel in Hartford and Milford.

The book was written by John T. Fitch, a 16th generation descendant of
William Fitch of Wicken. Copies can be obtained from Kalmia Co. Inc., 71
Dudley Street, Cambridge, MA 02140, Telephone (617) 864-5567. The book is
priced at $37.50, but may be ordered before September 1, 1990 for $29.50.
Buyers should add $2.50 for shipping, and Massachusetts residents should
add $2.50 for sales tax.

Sister, I noticed your message to James Davis regarding Ebenezer FITCH in
early CT. Ebenezer was a very popular FITCH name in CT from the mid 1600's
to 1800.

I have an Ebenezer FITCH, 3rd son of Gov. Thomas FITCH, b. 25 Feb 1728/9
Norwalk CT; d. 23 Feb 1762 Wilton CT; m. Lydia Mills. He was the first of a
line of at least 4 Ebenezer's that settled in Saratoga, NY and later at
Butler, NY.

As James mentioned in his reply, there were so many Ebenezer Fitch's in
Connecticut that more information would be needed to locate the correct
one!

Diana, from what I sent on 6/20 it seems to me:
Rev. James FITCH 1622-1702 m. Pricilla MASON (sisters)
Maj. James FITCH 1649- m1. Elizabeth MASON (sisters)
                             m2. Alice BRADFORD
I don't know much on MASON or BRADFORD.
You didn't mean to write JF 1662-1702 did you? I think the birth
was 1622.

As for Thomas FITCH m. Anna PEW 1611 - recorded in Braintree,
Norfolk Co, MA - IGI reference number is A184646 6205. These are
possibly the parents of Mary FITCH 1618/29-1694. There is some
controversy over whether it is PEW or REEVE or REVE. PEW or REVE would
have the same number of bumps when handwritten. What was recorded in
Braintree, MA? They were married in England and had kids there and
Thomas died there in 1633. Anna (PEW or REVE) FITCH d.1686 (I said on
6/20).
Well, John T. Fitch in 1990 in "The Fitch Family History" on p.220
says Thomas FITCH -1633 m.1611 Bocking, Engl. Anne REVE. She moved
to America with her sons and was living in 1669.
Rosco C. Fitch about 1930 in "History of the Fitch Family
1400-1930" on p.8 says Anne (REVE) FITCH was living in Hartford, Conn.
in 1669.
John G. Fitch in 1886 in "Genealogy of the Fitch Family" on p. 7
says in the Church register of Bocking, adjoining Braintree, in Essex,
a Thomas Ffitch married Ann Pew, Aug 6 1611. She came with her three
sons, Thomas Joseph, and James to America and Connecticut.
Could it be the IGI is wrong due to a mix up in Braintree's? But
that number indicates a records extraction rather than a individual's
submission doesn't it? You could maybe ask about this at the LDS
library (FHS) that you go to.

I can't place the birth of Elizabeth to James FITCH on 15 May 1636
in Boston MA (IGI number C502201 0160). Maybe she is an early birth
and she didn't survive and James had another Elizabeth later which has
mislead us. Even with this idea I still can't place her. Rev James
Fitch would have only been age 14 in 1636. I wonder if you could get a
copy of that page from Salt Lake City?

To unravel Mary FTICH b.1618/29 I guess the best thing to do is
collect every thing we can on every Mary Fitch born in the early 1600's
that we can and eventually a pattern might evolve. Also keep in mind
who may have copied erroneous info from somebody else. Keep all those
references in publishing date order.
It is perfectly reasonable to look in MA for clues on CT people
since many or most of them came through Roxbury or Boston on there way
to CT. They may have left relatives strewn along the way. Also they
may have been in MA long enough to have something recorded about them
there.
I will get to copying the pages from the John G. Fitch book pretty
soon. Got to go now.

GENEALOGY -------------------------------
James, We have not heard that you have received this message, sent Feb 4th,
so here it is again:

In the course of looking through the book "The Connecticut River and the
Valley of the Connecticut", by Edwin M. Bacon (1906), we came across a few
pages about John FITCH, whose first steamboat was in successful operation
more than twenty years before Fulton's "Clemont" was put on the Hudson. On
the wall of the entrance hall of the State House at Hartford is apparently
a bronze portrait with this inscription: "This tablet erected by the State
of Connecticut commemorates the genius, patience, and perseverance of John
Fitch,a native of the town of Windsor, the first to apply steam
successfully to the propulsion of vessels through water." The end of
FITCH's rather unhappy tale concludes in the summer of 1796 when, worn and
wearied with misfortune and hardship, he died by his own had in the village
tavern. It looks as though this may have been in the area of Bardston KY.

Do you wish to have a photocopy of the pages out of the book, or do you
already have this reference?

Which line is this John FITCH from? The information we have does not
extend far enough to be able to pinpoint his parentage. Do you have
information which shows him?
Fred-Diana.
P.S. Did you receive our message sent Jan 21st with a response to your
question about your Nebraska lines??
