                         jrSASI Project Parts List

The major pieces for the jrSASI project that I acquired for my system are
listed below with sources, costs and appropriate comments.

a. IBM PCjr, 640k, NEC V20 microprocessor, Tecmar jrCaptain sidecar.

This was my system when I began the project. No modification to the
existing system was necessary except to remove the internal modem.

b. SASI Winchester Hard Disk Controller.

     Shugart 1610-3 controller and manual.............................$90.00

Computer Surplus Store, 222 Phelan Ave., San Jose, CA 95112,
     (408) 280-1740. This was a new board, and the service was
prompt. The packing for shipment was better than that for
my hard drive. They also had used Xebec S1410A controllers.
The Shugart 1610-3 is the same as the Shugart 1610A, though
the documentation refers only to "the low end of the SCSI
industry standard interface," not to SASI.

c. Hard disk drive with an ST-506 or equivalent interface.

     Seagate ST225 (20 MB)........................................... 299.85

     N.D.R.C., 8511 Manderville, Dallas, TX 75231, (214) 750-9889.
Their service was slow and they tacked on $15 in surcharges.
The drive was still in its sealed pink polyethylene factory
packaging, but it was shipped in an expansion board box that
was so small it literally bulged with the drive, and the foam
rubber padding was minimal. That it survived the ruthless
hands of UPS in perfect condition is a tribute to the rugged-
ness of the drive itself. There was no manual included.

d. A power supply with at least 3 amps of +12VDC output and
2 amps or more of +5VDC for the SASI controller and hard drive.

Astec SA65-3401 65 watt switching power supply................... 35.60
AC cord, 3-conductor (Radio Shack)............................... 4.23
AC input connector, Molex P/N 09-50-3031 with pin sockets; about. 2.00
#4 ring-type grounding lug (hardware store); about............... .10
4 stick-on rubber feet (Acme Electronics); about................. .60
                                                                 TOTAL 42.53
Timeline, Inc., 1490 W. Artesia Blvd., Gardena, CA 90247,
     (800) 872-8878. Convection-cooled (quiet) power supply in a
     perforated metal box. +5V DC @ 5.0A, +12V DC @ 3.5A (5.0A
surge), -12V DC @ 0.25A. Needs AC cord, Molex connectors,
and stick-on rubber feet (for table-top placement), purchased
from miscellaneous sources. Comes with spec sheet, runs cool.

e. DC power supply cable.

1 DC output connector, Molex P/N 09-50-3131 with sockets; about.. 4.00
2 DC input connectors, AMP P/N 1-480424-0 with sockets; about.... 4.00
8 2-ft. lengths #18AWG wire in red, black, and any other color... 7.00
                                                                 TOTAL 15.00
I got the AMP connectors and pins from ABC Electronics, a
Minneapolis surplus store. I couldn't find the exact size
Molex connectors I needed, so I cut down one, for AC input,
and combined 6- and 7-cond. shells to make the DC out con-
nector. The wire can be bought by the spool at Radio Shack.

f. 50 pin ribbon cable to connect jrSASI board to SASI controller board.

2 50-conductor ribbon cable header sockets (ABC Electronics)..... 6.34
     1 4-ft. 50-conductor ribbon cable (ABC Electronics); about....... 6.00
                                                                 TOTAL 12.34
I started with a shorter cable, but found I needed a longer
one in order to be able to move stuff (the PCjr or the drive)
up to the front of my desk for trouble-shooting.

g. 20 pin ribbon cable to connect 1610-3 data connector to ST-225.

1 20-conductor ribbon cable header socket (ABC Electronics)...... 2.64
1 20-conductor ribbon cable edge connector (ABC Electronics)..... 3.17
1 5-inch 20-conductor ribbon cable (make from scrap 34 cond.)....
                                                                 TOTAL 5.81

h. 34 pin ribbon cable to connect 1610-3 control connector to ST-225.

2 34-conductor ribbon cable edge connectors (ABC Electronics).... 6.34
     1 4-inch 34-conductor ribbon cable (ABC--buy extra for above).... 1.06
                                                                 TOTAL 7.40

i. Parts for mounting the 1610-3 controller to the ST-225 drive.

     4 6-32 x 1-1/2 in. machine screws; about......................... 1.00
     8 6-32 nuts; about............................................... 1.00
     8 6-32 x 1/4 in. nylon spacers; about............................ 1.00
4 rubber feet for screw attachment; about........................ 1.00
                                                                 TOTAL 4.00

j. Low volume AC boxer fan for cooling drive.

1 Surplus Rotron Whisper Fan (Acme Electronics).................. 14.11
     1 AC cord, 2 conductor; about.................................... 2.00
     2 Electrical splice connectors, 18 gauge non-stripping........... .93
                                                                 TOTAL 17.04
The splice connectors are for connecting the AC cord to the
power supply AC cord at the power supply AC input; otherwise,
plug the fan into a switched power strip. The fan was an
unanticipated add-on. Although the drive was placed in the
open on a shelf, convection cooling alone was not enough to
keep it from feeling hot after several hours of operation.

k. IBM PCjr Prototyping Board with sidecar case.

     Perf board (Acme Electronics).................................... 6.56
IBM Parallel Sidecar (Budget Distributing)....................... 41.34
                                                                 TOTAL 47.90
TPL folded without sending me the prototyping board I had
ordered. I made my own from a piece of perf board purchased
at Acme Electronics and the sidecar connector from an IBM
Parallel Sidecar purchased from Budget Distributing, both
in Minneapolis. I also used the sidecar case.

Most of the above parts were ordered from JDR Microdevices,
     110 Knowles Dr., Los Gatos, CA 95030, (408) 866-6200.

m. jrSASI software

Included with this documentation ............................... FREE

TOTAL COST FOR PCjr 20 MB HARD DRIVE PARTS.......................... $583.77

(Note: You can add a 20 MB hard drive and controller to an IBM XT or clone
for as little as $400, since you don't need the interface, extra power
supply, or extra fan. If you go ahead with this project and later decide to
get an XT or AT clone, you can add your PCjr hard drive to the new system
for only the added cost of a new controller and perhaps a few cables.)
