I am trying to install DOS 5.0 upgrade and I get an error in setup
telling me to read the section in DOS 5.0 README.TXT on Bernoulli's. I
do and find a message saying "contact Iomega before you install MS-DOS
5.0 to get information about an updated RCD.
SYS. My problem, I have a PCB0 card and RCD won't work with it. I don't
see a new a10-20.com. Do I need an updated driver for DOS 5.0?

PC2 adapter. Is there a device driver for OS/2 for this? I am not
in great need since I bought 1.3 only to become familiar with OS/2.
I will be in greater need once 2.0 comes out, assuming that all
the features are present that I've read about. I currently plan at
that time to run OS/2 most of the time.
Again, any OS/2 driver? Thanks

Have been using driver 481c (beta sent by tech support) and was able to

I just upgraded from PC3B/50 to PC2B/50 to prepare for upgrade to 386
machine (current system is AST Premium 286 using the PC3B). The
combination of PC3B, DOS 5.0 and WIN 3.0 would not work reliably. This
combination lead to a loud clanging noise coming from my primary hard
drive (66MB Priam ID45/WD 1006 RLL Ctrlr). This problem also occurred
when trying to use the B-20 drive system outside WIN 3.0 once the
problem occurred inside WIN 3.0. I stopped using the bernoulli until I
could get the PC2B card based on the advice of your tech department. The
problem still remains in part. Even the PC2B card will not let the B-20
system work with the combination of DOS 5.0, WIN 3.0, RCD 7.0. I can use
the bernoulli outside WIN 3.0 with no apparent problems. Do you have any
clues as to what is wrong and who can fix it (you, Microsoft, ?)? I can
supply additional info - tell me what you need!

When DOS 5.0 first came out the people at Iomega were telling those of
us with PC3 adapters that we had to pay $125 to upgrade our
controller to support DOS 5.0.

Last week my boss called customer service and was given the same story.
After explaining the number of installed units (both in house and sold
to our customers) which we have, they promised to send him updated
software for our PC3 controllers.

He hasn't received it yet, and it doesn't appear here on this BBS at
the present time (the PC3 software here is still 2 years old).	But it
appears that if you call customer service and press the issue you can get
an upgraded driver.

Forcing us to pay $125 to upgrade our controllers because they are no
longer DOS compatible is just ridiculous!

from them all at no charge! I also know someone who called IOMEGA and
was told by one person that he needed a new card for $125.00 and when
he called back later was told that DOS 5.0 WOULD work with his present

My "old" drive "D" partition of my 40M hard drive is now designated as
drive "E". This means that all references to the old hard drive in my

the Bernoulli as drive "E" to keep the status quo?

Hi, About a year ago I purchased 2 new Tandy labeled Bernoulli 5 1/4" 20
Meg drives. Serveral weeks ago I also picked up 2 new earlier versio 20
Meggers with a bolt on interface card. I guess they were kinda
pre-production models.	Haven't gotten around to installing either of
them yet but that's not my problem.

With the 2 original drives, using RCD driver 4.81, (I'll dl the latest
after this message) and installed on a 386-33 and 286-16, I've begun to
experience an intermittent problem whenever I power up either system.
The problem is that the drives fail to spin up and are not recognized by
the driver software. Ctl-Alt-Del or reset fail to cure the problem but 1
or 2 power down-power up sequences will eventually work and the drives
continue to function properly.	If I attempt to assist the drive motor
during the power up sequence, there is a 'magnetic resistence' felt when
I turn the motor by hand. No physical resistance. The green led also
flashes intermittently when it's trying to spin up.

Can you provide any advice on what the problem might be? Is there any
home fix that I can try? I hate to take them back to Tandy or send them
to you for service because of the intermittent nature.	Any insight you
may provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

the set your terminal emulation to ANSI-BBS. The other is that you need

Walter,
The only operation that is available on the fly is the automatic
reallocation of sectors and it is definitely not a format procedure. The
format is done periodically as needed and defined by scanning the disk
using the RCD tools scan function to see how the sector "pool" is doing
and what percentage of spare sectors are still available. When the
available percentage is around 20% then a reformat is in order to
re-establish the "pool" of spares. If I have thoroughly confused you I
apologize and will ask you to either call me or someone in tech support

I received the Transportable 90 today, but the parallel port cable &
tri-pak didn't arrive yet.

The *BIG* bummer was that 1) I must boot under DOS 4.x or 5.0 to use the
90 2) The drive can not be partitioned 3) The power connector is for the
interface alone and not the dirve itself.

I had talked to your tech. people at least 5 times and told them that I
would be working on-site with older machines, including original PCs.
Not one of them mentioned the DOS 4.x-5.0 problem. I also told them that
I was contemplating getting a notebook computer. They lead me to believe
that not only was the parallel port interface powered by the machine, but
the machine as well. Finally, I told them that I was going to use the
parallel port interface and they lead me to believe that it could be self
booting.

I haven't even hooked it up and I am almost ready to send it back. Boy,
what a lousy way to run a company. As a PC consultant, I'm sure I'll
have many chances to tell this story.

Oh, I almost forgot. Re: your 13ms access time. You "forgot" to mention
that the drive spins down after 12 seconds and takes 160 ms to spin up.
Great, just great....

Bummed out

Hi,
I've been fiddling with DOS 5.0 and my RCD device drivers, and have
successfully loaded all (RCD.SYS, IOMEGA.SYS & IOMCACHE.SYS) into Upper
Memory Blocks.	All seems to be working fine, but I'm a little ap-
prehensive about trying to write to the disks without confirmation from
IOMEGA that this really works.	If it does, I'm absolutely thrilled!
Please tell me if this is safe to do. Right now, I've got the cache
using expanded memory, but will probably move this over to extended if
you can give me a green light on loading this stuff high. My second
question is, whne (and if) I swith to extended memory, should I use
XMS (as provided by HIMEM.SYS) or just let the cache use the extended
memory on my machine (a COMPAQ 386 - 16) without the XMS manager?
Thanks a lot! I've been wanting to load this stuff high now for
well over a year, and my dream has finally (I hope) come true.	Keep up
the GREAT work!

It sounds to me that your drive needs repair unless all of your

to change the 12 pin jumper block on it to a boot address (disable
position is when the jumpers cover all of the bottom 2 pins across). If
you have a setup.exe file on your software disk it help you to determine
the correct address. Judi

Three problems that I've noticed so far: Scanning of messages
does not allow reading messages...You must finish scanning, and then
read the messages you want. This leads to the next
problem...Excessively long message numbers - A7030B1EA02 - talk about a

With the Dual 90 connected and a cartridge inserted, the machine won't
even boot onto the floppy drive. So whether a floppy is inserted or not
what happens is that the machine performs POST, th as it starts the boot
sequence it switches on the drive access light and that is the end of it.

I have been using RCD 7.0 for a few weeks now, and PIO is enabled on the
PC2B/50. I emphasise that all I am basically doing is unplugging a Dual
44 and plugging in the Dual 90.

I have also tried a Transportable 90 with exactly the same result.

If I start the system without a cartridge in the drive then it boots
correctly, the drives are recognised and I can read and write the
cartridges. I have also successfully read a 44Mb disk in the Dual 90.

This is how I was able to format a 90 Mb disk to attempt the boot. (I
used just rcd f c: /s). as surface verify was performed on the disk the
first time I formatted it).

Any suggestions will be appreciated. I have discounted hardware
conflicts as the PC2B/50 is unchanged.	I suspect that thRCD format is
not writing the DOS 5.0 boot track correctly.

Dear Judi,

I ended up speaking to Steve Burt about my boot problem with the
Bernoulli 90 drives (apparently you've been on holiday? Hope it was
great).

It turns out the answer was that to boot from either the 90Mb drive or
the Lasersafe requires a version 7.0 boot ROM on the PC2B/50. I have now
upgraded from stock and it's working fine.

Quarterdeck, but something sure smells fishy, especially since Microsoft
stole credit for discovery of the HMA from Gary Pope/Quarterdeck (even

Phil,
If you have received a complete DOS 5.0 package the procedure to
format and copy system files to the disk is the same. BUT if you have
received a DOS 5.0 UPGRADE the procedure is different.	You must format
under a big foot dos version (like 3.31 or 4.01) on the 90 meg
copying the system and doing a surface verify to start with. Then you
must reboot without loading the RCD.SYS so the driver & drive are not
recognized. Load DOS 5.0 SETUP on drive A: and it will walk you through
making the hard disk c: (which is the Bernoulli 90) a bootable disk.
Next reboot off a floppy to load the RCD.SYS and recognize the drive;
modify the config.sys to load RCD.SYS and reboot off the cartridge. I
hope you can follow this....if you have questions maybe you could fax me
at 801-778-3460. Judi

Sorry you had a bad experience. The files available for download are
found in the FILES area where you then LIST the files and use a shift ?
to display all of them. The lines on all screens are created with the
standard 80 characters or less and you probably ought to check your

not pausing after each screenful of data or selecting more than the
default 23 line listing, you could see strange things.	You may also need
different settings in your software package which the manufacturer can

I've just received my 90Mb. Transportable, "Yipee and a brief Yarhoo!".
Unfortunately I coul'nt find any software info, bulletins, file areas or
messages on this particular subject.
So.. any chance of getting any?

Along the same vein, is the subject of disk cache's (Iomega's own) and
generally all the periphery stuff that completes the package.

Thanks for creating such a super (read SUPER) product...

Maybe I'm not looking in the right places but after scouring the
bulletins and message base I have been unable to find anything about the
new RCD.SYS that the documentation with my new copy of DOS 5.0 says I
will have to have before I can even load it onto my machine (an ancient -
by computer standards - IBM XT Clone).	The 20 Meg Bernoulli is the only
thing that has allowed me to stretch the usefulness of my system this far
(an upgrade to an 80386 is the next evolution) so I'm unwilling to give
it up.
Is there a new RCD.SYS somewhere?

I recently downloaded the latest version of your RCD Utilities, Version
7.0. As a long-time Bernoulli user (I own three drive systems), I try
to update my software periodically, particularly when a new version of
DOcomes out. I was disappointed to find that you have removed the
RCDBACK program from the utilities. I have been using that program as a
means to obtain daily incremental backups of modified files between my
monthly full backups, when I use Central Point's PCBACKUP, since it is
faster and requires fewer cartridges. Now, I have a newer version of
your software and have lost some important functionality. It's unique
approach of creating uniquely-named backup archive files which could be
accumulated on a single cartdge fit my purposes quite well. In my
opinion, functionality should never be reduced in newer software
versions.

Your self-extracting ZIP file unfortunately does not contain any
documentation of the new version of the driver and utilities, only a
brief README, which does not even contain all the technical information
in your bulletin on this BBS. My manuals are now obsolete with regard to
your current software.	Why can't you include the manual in the ZIP file?
Other, please send me a new manual so that I can use the new software
properly. Thanks.

I was reported in Info World Volume 13, Issue 33 August 19, 1991 on page
86 that if I trade in a 44MB drive I can purchase a 90MB drive for $730.
Or I can mail order a 90MB drive for $790 and keep my 44MB drive. Is
this true? If it is does Iomega plan to offer a better trade in price?

I am sure you have received an answer another way for the OS/2 driver
question but I'll tell you anyway that you can get it through customer
service or they can give you an authorized reseller reference. I
apologize for this oversight in answering you...I am still learning how
to manuever through this new stuff. Building it is a lot different
than using it and I am still learning.

Well so far everything you've been told is incorrect. This is the REAL
story.... The box you have is just fine without any ROM change. All you
will need is a new cable (37-50 which we have) and the interface kit
(PC2B-50) to attach the drive to the cpu using also the software driver
that comes in the interface kit. It should be as easy as install the
driver and plug in the board with drive attached and boot up. If you
have more questions please call us in tech support at 1-800-456-5522.

Actually at this point there isn't anything in here like bulletins, etc
on the 90's. We have hardcopy literature to send if you'd like some of
that. Just let us know and we'll send it. As time goes on you may see
more info on this BBS.....keep checking.

Yes there is and you'll need to call customer service at
1-800-456-5522. The dual 90 is $1200, the transportable is $725 and the
internal 90 is $625. That is about all I know for details. Judi

If you are referring to the PC2B-50F adapter, then yes the board is a bit
different in that it has a hardware check of how fast the bus on the cpu
is running which we didn't have some years ago. Note that the
consideration is of the bus speed, not the processor speed.

I am using DRDOS 5.0 and am unable to make a bootable Bernoulli. I have
a version 4 vintage Bernoulli driver and the latest version of DRDOS
(February release). Is there some way to format the Bernoulli cartridge
so that I can boot DRDOS?
