A. Getting Started
===============================================================

To get started with this software, we recommend following
the steps below.

1. If you have not already, uncompress and copy the software
   to your computer's hard disk by running the QTSE95.EXE
   program file. This is a self-extracting Windows archive
   that contains all necessary files for this program. No
   "installer" program or procedure is necessary other than
   unpacking the archive to your hard disk. However, if you
   want to you may optionally run the INSTALL.EXE program to
   create a START Button group and icons for the software.
2. Be sure to review the entire contents of this README file.
3. For an interactive tour of this software, use the QualiType
   online Help "Visual Help" sub-system. This is a "point and
   click" guide to the main features and functions of our
   programs. By browsing the Visual Help screens, you can
   learn about the programs without actually running them.
   (Any Windows *.HLP file may be opened directly by running
   the WINHELP.EXE program in your \WINDOWS directory).
4. For specific information about using FontHandler, see the
   main Help topics "What Is QualiType FontHandler" and "Font
   Management Essentials". For information on the Font Sentry
   system see "QualiType Font Sentry Information" in the
   "Alphabetical List of All Topics" under "Reference".
5. Finally, if you have not already set up a font-storage
   system on your computer, you may want to do so before
   beginning to work with FontHandler. See the FontHandler
   Help topic on "Setting Up Your Font System" for details.
   IMPORTANT: In reviewing the "Setting Up" information,
   please bear in mind the limitations on font-directory
   selection in FontHandler SE outlined below. The online
   Help information was written to reflect the full-version
   FontHandler product.

B. FontHandler SE Additional News and Information
===============================================================

1. SE Version Limitations
=========================
FontHandler SE is restricted in certain features as compared
to our full-version FontHandler 2.5 product. The program's
operation for installing and uninstalling TrueType and ATM
fonts is fully enabled, and you can preview and print samples
of fonts as well. The SE limitations are primarily in the
number of font groups that you can create and in the font
directories that the program can access. Other limitations
in various font-management-related features like renaming
fonts and searching for fonts are not available as well.

However, the program's basic operation and interface design
remains unaffected by these limitations, and you should be
able to fairly assess its usefulness and operation by running
this SE version. Anyone who is SERIOUS about fonts, however,
will definitely want to upgrade to our full-version program!
See the online Help file for ordering details and a special
discount offer.

2. Changing the HOME directory
==============================
By default, the FontHandler HOME directory is the location
where the program is installed. This directory is where the
FontHandler Setup Module will look for font files at startup,
but you will normally not have any font files stored here.
Thus at first, the program may not show any fonts in the
"UnInstalled" listbox. This is normal.

In the full-version FontHandler program, you can change
the default HOME directory in the Setup Options dialog box.
However, in this SE version the "Change Directory" function
is limited to ONLY the default Windows TrueType and Adobe
Type Manager font directory locations.

If you want to use some other directory besides (a) the
program's installation directory or (b) one of the two default
font-system locations, you may do so by manually editing the
Setup Module's "Home directory=" command line in a plain-text
editor such as the Windows NOTEPAD. You will find this command
line in the FHSTSE25.INI file in your \WINDOWS directory.
Note: see the additional information about this INI file below.

3. Reinstalling or Moving Program Files
=======================================
Please note that only ONE INSTANCE of the FontHandler SE
software is allowed to exist on your computer! Additional
copies that you may install to other drives or directories
will use configuration and data files from the first
installed instance.

However, if you need to move or reinstall the software to a
new location on your hard disk, you may do so without trouble
by first deleting the extra copy of the FHSTSE25.INI and/or
the QTCMSE20.INI files located in your Windows directory. When
the reinstalled or moved program is run the next time, it will
automatically recreate these files for you.

4. Installing Over FontHandler Version 1.0
==========================================
FontHandler SE installs into a new directory structure
compared to the default location for FontHandler 1.0. If you
are a FontHandler version 1.0 user, you can continue to use
the 1.0 version for productive work while you explore and
learn about our 2.0 release with this SE version. Please note
that we recommend only running ONE of each release at a time.
For best results you should exit any running instance of one
release before launching a copy of the other release.

5. Notes for Upgraders
======================
If you are upgrading to FontHandler 2.5 from either our 1.0
version or from any version of Ares(tm) FontMinder(tm), you
may be interested in reading the FHFMNOTE.WRI file enclosed
with this FontHandler SE file set. This is a Windows Write
format document with a copy of the "Notes for Upgraders"
section of the printed FontHandler User's Guide book.

6. Additional Files of Interest
===============================
* FONTHAND.DOT
      This is a Microsoft Word for Windows template file
      which may be used to integrate FontHandler SE with
      Word, so that a button and menu command to launch
      FontHandler SE appears on the Word toolbar and
      under the "Tools" menu.

      To use this file, simply copy it to your Word
      for Windows \STARTUP directory. The next time
      you start Word, the button and menu item for
      FontHandler will appear. To remove this feature,
      simply move or delete the FONTHAND.DOT file from
      the \STARTUP directory again.

      Note that if you install FontHandler SE to a disk
      drive or directory other than the default, you
      must edit the macro contained in this template
      file to point to the correct program location.
      See your Word for Windows documentation for more
      information on *.DOT files, editing macros, and
      template files in the \STARTUP directory.

C. Special Notes on Windows 95 and FontHandler SE
===============================================================

1. Long Filenames and Fonts
===========================
FontHandler SE does not support long filenames under
Windows 95. In general this applies only to folder names
since Microsoft does not support or recommend using long
filenames for ANY program-file (TrueType *.TTF and/or Adobe
Type Manager *.PFB/*.PFM font files are considered to be
"system" or program files the same as *.COM *.EXE or *.DLL
program files). Long filenames under Windows 95 should
generally be used ONLY for data files.

The next version of FontHandler will likely support long
filenames for font-storage folders, but for now please limit
any folders you create for font storage to eight characters
according to the older rules under DOS and Windows 3.1x.

2. Windows 95 HELP Color Problems
=================================
Due to a bug in the Windows 95 online Help system, the colors
in all QualiType Help files may sometimes not appear correct,
rendering the Help file unreadable on screen.

If you are having trouble with a QualiType Help file, please
ensure that your system's color scheme is set up to use a
WHITE background for all document-windows. To change your
system colors, right click on the desktop, select PROPERTIES
and then click on the APPEARANCE tab. Select "Window" from the
"Item:" listbox and select the color WHITE from the "Color:"
listbox. Click the OK or APPLY buttons and then return to
the QualiType Help file and see if the problem has gone away.

3. Screen Font *.FON Files
==========================
Windows 95 uses certain *.FON format font files for drawing
system elements like menus and dialog boxes on the screen.
These font files are present in the \WINDOWS\FONTS folder
with the "Hidden" and/or "System" attribute enabled. (Exactly
which files are present here depends on what video driver
you have installed.)

DO NOT MOVE OR DELETE any of these *.FON files or Windows
may not look right, or even be able to start! FontHandler
does not support bitmap/system *.FON files so if you ALWAYS
use FontHandler to manage your fonts you will be safe.

In addition, if something goes wrong with your configuration
for these bitmap/screen fonts, you can usually correct the
trouble by switching your system to use the standard VGA
(640x480, 16 color) video driver provided with Windows, and
then switching back again to your preferred video driver.

4. The Windows 95 MARLETT Font
===============================
Windows 95 uses a special TrueType font named "Marlett".
This font contains 35 graphic characters, mapped to the
slots for "zero" to "nine" and the lowercase "A" to "Y".
These characters are used to create key screen-graphic
elements in the Windows 95 user interface, such as the
MINIMIZE/MAXIMIZE and CLOSE button icons.

Since the Marlett font can NEVER be uninstalled (it is
loaded by Windows' GDI sub-system, NOT the usual TrueType
font sub-system) QualiType FontHandler has been specifically
designed to IGNORE this font in your installed-font lists.
Thus you will never be bothered by seeing this required
Windows "system" font in your font management activities
with FontHandler.

However, this is not true of most application programs, so
you will most likely see the "Marlett" font listed in the
font menu of your word processing and graphics/DTP software
even if you did not specifically try to install the Marlett
font. There is nothing FontHandler can do about this. In
addition, the MARLETT.TTF font file MUST be available in
the Windows 95 FONTS folder, like the special "hidden" *.FON
files noted above. Do not try to delete the MARLETT.TTF file
or Windows will not look right.

5. The Windows 95 FONTS Folder
===============================
Windows 95 has a special feature in the system FONTS folder
(accessed by the Explorer or via the Control Panel) to
automatically install any TrueType font files that reside
there whenever the folder is accessed.

You can prevent this feature from unexpectedly changing
your installed-font list by simply not keeping any font
files in the FONTS folder (except, of course, the REQUIRED
font files as noted above!). For detailed information about
moving font files to a different folder, see the FontHandler
online Help topic "Moving and/or Copying Font Files."

D. Font Sentry SE Additional News and Information
