10/26/1994 - Semiautomatic Turkeys

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) -- Two Haitians living in South
Florida have admitted to a scheme to stuff semiautomatic pistols
into turkeys and smuggle them into Haiti.

Patrick Louiseau and Florence Toussaint pleaded guilty Monday to
federal firearms charges.

Louiseau and Toussaint thawed out frozen turkeys and stuffed two
or three .380-caliber pistols into each. Then they refroze the
turkeys, packed them in their luggage and carried 20 guns to Haiti
on May 17, authorities said.

They were arrested June 7 after buying 90 more guns.
Louiseau, 26, pleaded guilty to dealing in firearms without a
federal license and shipping weapons overseas without an export
license. He faces up to 15 years in prison and $1.25 million in
fines.

Toussaint, 27, pleaded guilty to making false statements on a
federal firearms form. She faces up to 10 years in prison and a
$250,000 fine.

According to government evidence, Louiseau bought the weapons at
the request of brothers in the Haitian secret police and military.

SUCCESS" PROPAGANDA:]

Toussaint's lawyer said they were for private citizens to defend
themselves against hit squads.

Sentencing was set for Dec. 30.
