Saving and Restoring the Windows 95 Registry

The Registry contains the settings for LANtastic for Windows 95 and most

applications and hardware settings. During installation of the network adapter

your Registry may become corrupt if incorrect drivers or settings are used. If

LANtastic for Windows 95 is already successfully installed and working and

another adapter or software is being installed your Registry may also become

corrupt.

If the Registry is damaged by software installation or has become corrupted by

tampering, LANtastic for Windows 95 will not be able to use the installed

software applications or you may not be able to start Windows 95 at all.

Before making changes in your LANtastic for Windows 95 computer make sure you

back up the Registry.

This will save you the time of having to reinstall or troubleshooting why

LANtastic for Windows 95 fails to start, malfunctions or will start only in

SAFE MODE. The LANtastic for Windows 95 system Registry is comprised of

USER.DAT and SYSTEM.DAT, both located in your Windows directory (e.g.,

C:\WIN95).

Note: Each time Windows 95 is started successfully it updates USER.DAT and

SYSTEM. DAT to USER.DA0 and SYSTEM.DA0. These files are hidden, which means

you normally won't see them in Explorer. To see hidden files in Explorer,

choose Options from the View menu, choose the View tab, and click on Show All

Files.

How to back up the Registry

The Registry can be exported, imported, or recreated using either the Windows-

based version of Registry editor or the real-mode version on the Windows 95

emergency startup disk. By using the export capabilities of Registry editor, a

specific branch or the entire Registry can be saved in text format as a .REG

file. You may want to do this when editing only a small branch of the Registry

A branch of or the entire Registry can be restored by importing a .REG file

that was created by exporting the Registry. The best way still is to back up

the whole Registry unless you are familiar with how this complex database is

written to when installing new software and each branch that is updated.

If you are exporting or importing registry files using the Windows-based

version of Registry Editor, use the Export and Import commands from the

registry menu. Go to the START tab, then RUN and type REGEDIT, then press

enter and after the program begins hold down the ALT and then letter [ R ] and

then tap the letter[ I ] to import [ E ] for exporting the Registry.

Follow the prompts to then import or export the Registry.

When an emergency arises and the Registry is severely corrupted, you can start

the computer using the Windows 95 startup disk that was created during your

installation of Windows 95 . Then you can use the real-mode REGEDIT.EXE

utility on the startup disk to import a .REG file that you exported and put

away for an emergency. In this case, the following command syntax can be used

at the command prompt.

regedit [/L:system] [/R:user] file1.reg, file1a.reg...

regedit [/L:system] [/R:user] /e file3.reg [regkey]

regedit [/L:system] [/R:user] /c file2.reg

Parameter Description

/L:system Specifies the location of SYSTEM.DAT.

/R:user Specifies the location of USER.DAT.

file1.reg Specifies one or more .REG files to import into the

Registry.

/e file3.reg Specifies the filename to which the Registry should be exported.

regkey Option

ally, specifies the starting Registry key from which to export a portion of

the

Registry. If no value is specified, regedit /e exports the entire Registry.

/c file2.reg Specifies the .REG file to use to replace the entire contents of

the Registry.

Caution Use the regedit /c option with discretion, and only when you are sure

that the specified .REG file contains a complete image of the Registry;

otherwise your entire Registry will become unusable.
