Common Error Messages for LANtastic DOS/Windows

Network Error messages that are generated by LANtastic and DOS do not always

explain the problem being encountered. Most can be confusing . Here are some

explanations of some more frequent error messages, their meaning and possible

solutions.

Error: Can?t Find LPICALLW.DLL

Meaning: Windows was unable to load the support application LPICALLW.DLL from

the LANTASTI subdirectory because LANTASTI is not in the DOS path

       ahead of the WINDOWS subdirectory.

Possible Causes:

a. The PATH statement in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file appears below the CALL

C:\LANTASTI\STARTNET.BAT.

b. The CALL C:\LANTASTI\STARTNET.BAT command line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file has

been altered by MEMMAKER or some other program.

Possible Solutions:

a. Move the CALL C:\LANTASTI\STARTNET.BAT command line so it is after the

last PATH statement run in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

b. Make sure the CALL C:\LANTASTI\STARTNET.BAT command line has not been

altered by any additional statements or commands on the same line.

c. Copy LPICALLW.DLL from the LANTASTI directory to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM

subdirectory

Error: Out of Environment Space

Meaning: DOS can not add an environment variable into memory because it ran

out of the memory space it uses to store them.

Possible Causes:

a. Other programs that use environment variables have used up the memory space

for storing them.

b. MEMMAKER has added LOADHIGH COMMAND.COM to the CALL

  C:\LANTASTI\STARTNET.BAT.

Possible Solutions:

a. Add the SHELL=C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM /E:512 /P COMMAND.COM to the CONFIG.SYS

file. You may need to increase the value of the /E: value if you still get

the Out of Environment space error.

b. Don?t attempt to load the STARTNET.BAT file using a LOADHIGH command.

Note: to determine the correct number of bytes for the environment size, at

the DOS prompt type

      SET > ENVSIZE

 now type

       DIR ENVSIZE

The size of the file will indicate the # of bytes for the current environment.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Error: Cannot Locate Network Name

Meaning: The command that was just executed attempted to contact a server that

does not appear to be on the network . Command may occur in a batch

file so you may need to edit various batch files to locate the NET USE

       or NET LOGIN commands.

Possible Causes:

a. The command contained a server name that does not exist on the network.

b. The server name was misspelled in the command.

c. Your network hardware/cabling is not correctly configured or connected.

Possible Solutions:

a. Verify the name of the server you are attempting to contact is accurate,

that the server is turned on, the network software is loaded (NET SHOW),

and that the server is attached to the network properly.

b. Verify that your network hardware is properly configured, the correct

drivers are loading and that your adapter is properly cabled.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------

Error: Duplicate Redirection or Login

Meaning: The command that was just executed attempted to log in to a server

that you are already logged into or you already have a redirection to.

Command may occur in a batch file so you may need to edit various

batch files to look for NET USE or NET LOGIN commands.

Possible Causes:

a. You are already logged into the server.

b. The resource you are requesting is already attached to the COM/LPT port or

drive letter.

c. The port or drive letter you just tried to use is already redirected to

another resource.

d. You have a SUBST command for that drive letter loading before the network

loads.

Possible Solutions:

a. Remove any duplicate logins or redirections from any batch files that you

executed to cause this message.

b. Choose another port or drive letter for the redirection that you just

attempted, or remove the previous redirection (NET UNUSE) and repeat your

command.

d. Remove the SUBST command or use another drive letter for your redirection.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------

Error: Too Many Logins or Redirections

Meaning: Your access to the server or resource you just attempted to log in to

or redirect to has been prevented due to network configuration

settings. Command may occur in a batch file so you may need to edit

various batch files to look for NET USE or NET LOGIN commands.

Possible Causes:

a. You have exceeded the number of server logins that you are allowed from

this workstation/server.

b. The server you are logging into reached its maximum number of users before

you logged in.

c. The username that you are using to access this server has reached the

maximum number of logins that it is allowed.

Possible Solutions:

a. Increase the settings for the LOGINS= switch in your STARTNET.CFG file or

on your REDIR command line on your workstation. This switch defaults to 2.

(The STARTNET.CFG is used if the @STARTNET.CFG switch appears on the REDIR

command line.)

b. Increase the MAX_USERS setting in the STARTNET.CFG file or in the NET_MGR

program under the SERVER STARTUP PARAMETERS section of the server.

c. Increase the number of concurrent logins on your username in the NET_MGR

program under the INDIVIDUAL ACCOUNTS section or under the WILDCARD ACCOUNTS

section (depending on the use of usernames on your server) on the server.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------

Error: No Free File Handles

Meaning: DOS has reached its limit for number of files that can be opened on

the PC. This is set by the FILES= switch in the CONFIG.SYS file.

Possible Causes:

a. FILES= in CONFIG.SYS is greater than the maximum of 255.

b. FILES= in CONFIG.SYS does not have a high enough number to open all the

files it needs to run.

Possible Solutions:

a. Increase the value of the FILES= switch in the CONFIG.SYS file to 255.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------

Error: NETBIOS is not present, Redirector is not installed

Meaning: The drivers that connect the network hardware to the network

operating system did not load, probably because of some error or

       problem.

Possible Causes:

a. There is a defect or problem with the network adapter that the driver

detected. The driver did not load when it attempted to load.

b. The AILANBIO program erred because of some configuration error.

Possible Solutions:

a. Watch the driver load; troubleshoot any errors reported. (Remember that for

an NDIS adapter, two of the drivers will load in the CONFIG.SYS file).

b. Watch AILANBIO load; troubleshoot any errors reported.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------

Error: Invalid drive specification

Meaning: The drive letter that you just tried to access is not properly

redirected or DOS does not have a device that supports that drive

       letter.

Possible Causes:

a. The drive letter is not redirected.

b. The drive letter you tried is greater than the LASTDRIVE setting in

CONFIG.SYS.

Possible Solutions:

a. Use NET SHOW to determine if the drive letter you just tried to access is

being redirected. Test by redirecting the drive letter again.

b. Set LASTDRIVE = to Z or the highest drive letter you would like to use.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------

Error: LANtastic REDIRector must be started first. CD-ROM or other network

redirector present.

Meaning: The REDIR program detected a CD-ROM redirector or another network

program that detects requests for network activity and acts upon them.

Possible Cause:

The Microsoft CD-ROM Extensions program MSCDEX or another Network

Redirector/Requestor is loading before the LANtastic REDIR program.

Possible Solution:

Load MSCDEX after REDIR but before SERVER loads (this is the recommended

configuration).

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------

Error: Network Node ?????? is not listening

Meaning: The SERVER program is not loaded on the computer you just tried to

log in to or redirect to.

Possible Causes:

a. The SERVER program did not load because of a configuration error.

b. The computer you are logging into was never configured as a server.

Possible Solutions:

a. Troubleshoot any error messages that are reported while server is loading.

b. Re-install the LANtastic NOS on the system and enable it to share (load

SERVER).

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------

Error: Not enough memory, Reduce files, tasks or buffer size

Meaning: The SERVER.EXE as it is presently configured will not fit into the

memory space left for it to load in.

Possible Causes:

a. Not enough conventional memory available for the SERVER.EXE to load in.

b. If trying to load SERVER.EXE high, not enough available memory in the Upper

Memory Blocks for the SERVER.EXE to load in.

Possible Solutions:

a. Use the NET_MGR program to reduce the size of the network/printer buffers,

number of tasks or the max files setting. (Note: The SERVER.EXE program can

load its configuration for these items from a switch file. Check to see if

an @filename switch exists on the SERVER.EXE command line in the

STARTNET.BAT file. If one exists, edit the switch file to make these

changes.

b. Don?t load SERVER.EXE high, or don?t load other programs high to give the

SERVER.EXE the space it needs to load.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------

Error: File not found using NET USE command

Meaning: The NET USE command that was just executed attempted to access a

resource that did not exist on the server. Command may occur in a batch

file so you may need to edit various batch files to look for NET USE

       or NET LOGIN commands.

Possible Causes:

a. The resource name is misspelled on the NET USE command line.

b. The resource does not exist on server.

Possible Solutions:

a. Verify the names of the resources on the server using the NET program and

correct any syntax or spelling errors.

b. Use the NET_MGR program to add the resource or choose an existing resource

on the server.
