AB High maternal mortality and morbidity rates are a challenge for all
involved in the care of mothers and babies. One response takes the form
of an educational programme led by professional midwives to teach
traditional birth attendants to recognize risk conditions and improve
their care of mothers and babies. Such a programme was organized as part
of a Canadian-Nigerian safe motherhood initiative, and carried out in
       Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.
