AB The Sacred Heart Hospice, Sydney, was founded in 1890 and is the largest
inpatient palliative-care facility in Australia. Patients with advanced
cancer form the predominant patient group, although patients with
HIV/AIDS account for approximately 20% of admissions. A
community-outreach service, established in 1983, cares for more patients
at home than in the Hospice. Recently the Hospice has participated in a
number of clinical trials and intends to become a regional centre for
       palliative-care research, education and training.
