 PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION   MODE OF ACTION: The activity of curdlan
                          sulfate is comparable to other sulfated
                          polysaccharides with anti-HIV activity in
                          vitro (e.g. dextran sulfate). These compounds
                          are thought to inhibit HIV by blocking virion
                          adsorption to target cell surfaces. In vitro
                          curdlan sulfate inhibits both the cell-free
                          and cell-associated transmission of HIV-1 to
                          host cells and interferes with early events
                          in virus infection. Curdlan sulfate inhibited
                          HIV-1 (strain IIIB) antigen expression on
                          MT-4 cells at a concentration of 3.3
                          micrograms/ml. Syncytia formation was also
                          blocked at the same concentration.  In
                          contrast, curdlan sulfate exhibits no
                          significant virucidal activity and has little
                          effect on already infected cells. [AmFAR Tx
