NAME OF SUBSTANCE Microparticulate Monovalent HIV-1 Peptide
                          Vaccine [NIAID VEU 018]
PROTOCOL ID NUMBERS NIAID VEU 018
 PROTOCOL ID NUMBERS FDA 091
 SECONDARY SOURCE ID DRG
PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION MODE OF ACTION: Consists of eight PND-derived
peptides attached to a lysine core to form
radial-octamers. The PND peptides are the
immunogenic portion of the multiple antigen
peptide; the lysine core matrix is not
immunogenic. The antigen is entrapped in
                          biodegradable microparticles that may protect
it from acid and proteolytic digestion in the
                          gastrointestinal tract. Microparticles are
taken up into the Peyer's patches following
                          oral administration, phagocytosed by
macrophages, and degraded over time, thus
inducing both mucosal and systemic immunity.
