Good morning. It's Sunday the 21st of January and here is the GB2RS news
broadcast, prepared by the RSGB and intended for all radio amateurs and
short-wave listeners.

The Lincoln Short Wave Club, which was formed as the Lincoln Wireless
and Scientific Society in 1921, is celebrating its 75th anniversary on
Saturday the 10th of February. The committee is looking for former
members of the club to help celebrate with an exhibition and special
event station at the Lawn Complex, Lincoln, from 12 noon until 5.00 pm.
In the evening there will be a celebratory dinner. The day's events will
be opened jointly by the Mayor of Lincoln, Councillor Geoff Ellis, and
RSGB President Peter Sheppard, G4EJP. The Lincoln Short Wave Club will
be changing venue for its regular club meetings. For further details on
the 75th anniversary celebrations or the new venue, please contact John
Middleton, G8VGF, on 01522 525760.

The Mendip Repeater Group introduced a new membership category for
Novices, with a lower annual subscription, at its recent AGM. For more
details please contact Pam, G7SPW, at P O Box 73, Wells, Somerset.

A new 50 MHz GB2RS news broadcast serving Central Scotland starts on
Sunday the 4th of February at 11.30 am. Initially, it will be for an
experimental period of three months but will be continued if it proves
to be a success. The transmission will be from the station of Tom
Menzies, GM1GEQ, and will be on 51.530 MHz with vertical polarisation.
Reports will be welcome, and should be sent to GM1GEQ via the RSGB QSL
bureau.

Now some items of HF DX news from the weekly RSGB DX News Sheet, which
is edited by Chris Page, G4BUE:

>From Barbados, VE3ICR will sign 8P9DX from Saturday the 20th of January
until the 3rd of February. Activity will be mainly CW on the LF bands.

>From Dominica, an American group is planning activity as J77A from
Saturday the 20th until Thursday the 25th of January. Operation will be
on all bands from 10 to 160 metres, including the WARC bands, on CW,
SSB, RTTY and the RS-12 satellite, but with the emphasis on RTTY and 80
and 160 metres CW.

And the Dateline DX Association's planned operation from Wake Island as
AL7EL/KH9 has been postponed by one week due to transportation
difficulties. The new dates for the operation are the 1st to 7th of
February. This DXpedition will also emphasise 80 and 160 metre
operation.

Next the Rally News:

The Oldham Amateur Radio Club Mobile Rally is taking place today, the
21st of January, at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Civic Centre, West Street,
in Oldham. The event features the usual traders and a bring and buy
stall. Morse tests will also be available on demand. Doors open at 11.00
am, or 10.30 am for disabled visitors, and talk-in is on 2 metres
channel S22.

The Fenland Repeater Group and Lincolnshire Packet Group are holding a
"Mid-winter Rally" next Sunday, the 28th of January, at the Youth Club,
in Horncastle, Lincolnshire. The event starts at 10.00 am and further
details may be obtained from G0PXB on 01526 860320.

And now a date for your diary:

The RSGB National VHF Convention takes place at the usual venue -
Sandown Park in Surrey - on Sunday the 18th of February. The event
features a full VHF, UHF and Microwave lecture programme, together with
a trade show and special interest groups. Full details will be published
in the February edition of Radio Communication, which is due to be
posted to all RSGB members this week.

Now for the HF contest news:

An 80 metre session of the LF Cumulative CW Contest takes place today,
Sunday the 21st of January, between 1600 and 1800 UTC. A 160m session is
on Wednesday evening, the 24th, between 2000 and 2200; another 80 metre
session takes place next Saturday the 27th, whilst a 40 metre session
takes place next Sunday, the 28th. The rules were published in last
September's RadCom, but please note that the dates were given
incorrectly in September. The correct dates are shown in the January
RadCom.

The CQ World Wide 160 metre CW Contest takes place next weekend. Brief
rules appear on page 23 of the January RadCom, but please note that the
contest starts at 2200 UTC on Friday night, the 26th of January, and
ends at 1600 UTC on Sunday the 28th of January. In last year's contest,
G3ZEM was the world's leading station in the multi-operator section.

The Worked All Britain 160 metre Contest takes place on Saturday the
27th of January between 1900 and 2300 hours. Contest rules are available
from the new WAB Awards Manager, Kate Wragg, G0FEZ, whose address is
correct in the RSGB Call Book.

Next some VHF contest news:

The first of five sessions in the RSGB 70 MHz Cumulative Contest takes
place today, the 21st. The second session is next Sunday, the 28th of
January and the rules can be found in last September's RadCom.

And now the solar factual data:

The period from the 8th to the 14th of January saw solar activity at
very low levels and the geomagnetic field increase to active levels.
Sunspot numbers declined from 53 on the 8th until the 10th when the
solar disc became spotless. The mean for the period was 27. Solar flux
levels also declined, from 79 units on the 8th, to 69 units by the 13th.
The average was 73. No solar fares were reported. Electron fluence
remained at moderate levels, whilst X-Ray flux declined from A3.6 units
on the 8th, to A1.0 units by the 12th, and then remained at that level.
The average was A2.6 units. The 90-day solar flux average on the 14th
was 75 units, one unit down on last week.

Geomagnetic activity started the period at very quiet levels with an Ap
index of only 1 unit on the 9th and the 10th. Activity increased during
the morning of the 13th, with periods of major storm conditions observed
at middle to high latitudes. The daily Ap index on the 13th was 35
units. Levels declined slightly on the 14th, with an Ap index of 23, and
the average was Ap 10 units. The aa indices, as supplied by the British
Geological Survey for the period from the 2nd to the 8th of January, saw
levels between quiet and unsettled. Levels were down to only 8.5
nanoTeslas on the 8th, with an average of 13.6 nanoTeslas.

I'll repeat the figures: spots - 27, flux - 73, Ap index - 10, X-Ray
flux - A2.6.

Now the ionospheric data for Central France.

The F2 daytime critical frequencies at Poitiers, as reported by Meudon
for the period from the 5th to the 11th of January, averaged 6.2MHz and
varied little day to day. The darkness hour lows showed some
improvement, and increased from 2.5MHz on the 6th, to 3.4MHz on the 8th,
with an average of 2.9MHz. The daytime highs took place between 1000 and
1500, with the darkness hour lows between 1900 and 0700 hours.

I'll repeat the figures: highs - 6.2MHz, lows - 2.9MHz.

And lastly the solar forecast.

This week the slightly more active side of the sun will be rotating into
view and therefore solar flux levels are expected to increase to the mid
70s. Solar activity is expected to remain at very low levels.
Geomagnetic activity is expected to be at unsettled to active levels
today and tomorrow, but then decline to quiet levels for the remainder
of the week. Ionospheric MUFs for the south during daylight hours are
expected to be about 18MHz, and for the north about 15MHz. The darkness
hour lows are expected to be about 7MHz. HF band conditions could well
show some improvement in the second half of the week.

And that's the end of the solar information.

Finally in the main news, SSL has informed the Society that as of last
Wednesday morning, the latest callsigns allocated were in the G0 Whisky
Uniform and G7 Victor Zulu series, and Novice calls in the 2 0 Alfa
November and 2 1 Echo Quebec series.

Next, the local news.
