IRTS AGM

The IRTS AGM weekend, which was ably hosted by Final Radio Club,
commenced with the annual dinner dance at Jurys Hotel on Saturday
night April 27th where guests of the Society included the RSGB
President Peter Sheppard G4EJP and Sean McMahon, Aidan Ryan and
Peggy Connolly of the Department of Communications.

A fine attendance of nearly one hundred, from all parts of EI and
from GI, G, GD and GW enjoyed a very sociable evening and the rag
chewing carried on into the early hours.

Sunday morning required an early start for those unlucky enough to
be involved in the rally which opened at the earlier than usual
time of eleven oclock. All the usual traders were present with a
wide range of equipment and were ready for the queue which had
formed well before opening time.

The Annual General Meeting attracted the biggest crowd for many
years and the business was conducted smoothly and without any
controversy.

Jim Ryan EI3DP was elected President for his third and final year,
Bill Somerville-Large was elected vice-president and the following
were elected to the Committee:-

Mike EI3IG, Declan EI6FR, John EI7GL, Rory EI4DJB, Dermot EI4ESB,
Paul EI2CA, Dave EI4BZ, Noel EI6HW, Ken EI4DW, Paul EI5DI and
Paddy EI6ID.

All the usual jobs will be allocated at the first committee
meeting in Athlone on Saturday next May 11th.

The Society has three awards for services to the hobby or to the
society and one of these, the Collins Cup was presented to Olive
Moore, XYL of Dave EI4BZ, for her many years of work in the
distribution of the newsletter, her work on the IRTS bookstand at
rallies all over the country and her support for Dave EI4BZ in the
many roles he plays in the running of the Society.

The Arup Cup was presented to Noel Mulvihill EI6HW for his
outstanding contribution to the success of the Worked All Ireland
Award Scheme. Noel has acted as net controller since the start and
is the backbone of the award scheme. He can be found most days on
the Net frequency of 3.670 MHz.

The Third Award, the Pat Conway Cup was not awarded this year due
to a lack of nominations.

The Sheila Piper Cup was presented to Declan EI6FR for his
excellent On the Air column in the Newsletter covering
activities on the HF and VHF bands.

Two trophies are available for construction projects and the Kevin
Freeney Trophy was won by Tony Breathnach EI5EM for a homebrew SWR
and power meter.

The Folan Shield was not awarded this year.

The Ian Morris Trophy is awarded to the Shortwave Listener who has
the greatest number of DXCC countries confirmed over the previous
twelve months. This award was won this year by Frances Dineen
EI1260 from Togher in Cork City who had a total of one hundred and
twenty five counties confirmed.

The IRTS DX Trophy is awarded to the highest scoring single
operator Echo India station in the ARRL DX Contests. It was won
this year by Declan Lennon EI9HQ.

The Hal Hodgens Key is awarded to the leading EI Station in the 12
hour section of the Islands on the Air contest. The winner this
year was Mick McLoughlin EI6GF.

The full list of contest award winners will be carried in the next
Newsletter.

Marconi Exhibition Tralee

After a very busy weekend at the AGM in Jurys, IRTS President was
not too long back home in Cork when he set out again, this time to
Tralee, where he represented the Society at the official opening
of the Marconi exhibition at the Ashe Memorial Hall on Monday
April 29th.

Among the guests at the opening, performed by the Tanaiste Mr.
Dick Spring T.D., was Princess Elletra Marconi, daughter of
Guglielmo Marconi, who expressed her delight at the participation
of radio amateurs in the exhibition.

The exhibition entitled From Marconi to the Music of the Stars,
The History of Telecommunications will run until the end of
October and features the history of telegraphy, telephone, radio
and television, as well as more recent developments such as
satellite technology, radio astronomy and information transmission
systems.

As part of the exhibition, a special event station will be
operated under the control of Tom EI3HH and guest operators are
welcome.

CW Field Day

The next IRTS Field Day will be the CW one and will take place
over the June bank holiday weekend. It is a twenty four hour
event, starting on Saturday June 1st at 1500 UTC and running until
1500 UTC on the Sunday. This is an ideal outing for clubs and the
rules for the restricted section only allows a single aerial on
two supports not greater than thirty five feet. This should be
well within the capability of even the less experienced clubs and
we look forward to some new entries this year.
