
Introduction to the Yorkshire Archaeological Society

YORKSHIRE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SOCIETY

The Yorkshire Archaeological Society (YAS) was founded in 1863, 
its aims to further the study of the history, architecture and 
archaeology of Yorkshire. It has several specialist sections 
which may be joined separately or in addition to the main 
Society, the largest one being the Family History Section 

HEADQUARTERS

The Headquarters of the Y.A.S. is Claremont, an attractive 
Georgian house. The library and archives can be found here and 
it is where we hold our meetings. 

LIBRARY & ARCHIVES

These house a comprehensive collection of historical material 
on the ancient County of Yorkshire. The library can be used for 
research and Members may borrow material deposited by the 
section, including other societies journals. The Y.A.S. 
archives contain a large number of family, estate and 
antiquarian papers, maps, drawings and unpublished transcripts 
of some Yorkshire parish registers and also monumental 
inscriptions, and are administered by the West Yorkshire 
Archive Services. 

FAMILY HISTORY SECTION

We were founded in 1973 and have approximately 1500 members and 
subscribers. Regular meetings are held in the lecture room at 
Claremont, when we always have a bookstall selling a variety of 
publications linked with Family History. 

Other sections of the Y.A.S. are :- Prehistory Research, Roman 
Antiquities, Medieval , Georgian, Industrial History and Local 
History. There are also three publishing sections :- Record 
Series, Parish Register Series and Wakefield Court Rolls. For
