                         HOW TO PLAY WSCHESS

1. To find a game, ask if anyone in the channel is interested in a game
with you. There are people of all different strengths in the #chess
   channel.
2. WSchess links to other people on the IRC via thier IP number. (IP=
Internet Protocol) There are two ways to obtain an IP number:
      a. you can ask somebody in the channel to get the IP number for
         you.
      b. you could do a DNS lookup on the persons nick by typing
         "/dns nick" <---- Recommended >
3. There are 3 ways to connect to someone via WSchess.
   1. As a host (someone connects to you)
   2. To a host (you connect to someone else)
   3. Observe a game (you connect to a game in progress to watch it)

These connect options can be found under the WSchess pulldown
   menu in wschess.

To be host you need to click 'be a host' under the Wschess pulldown
menu. You will then get a message box that says 'listening to port'.
Then click on OK. You are now waiting for someone to connect to your
   computer.

When you connect to a host you will be shown a window where you
must enter your opponents IP number. You put the IP number in the
bottom box of this window. (please include the dots)

You will get this same window when you connect as an observer, and
you must follow the same procedures.

4. Once you are connected you start a game by clicking on the Game
pulldown menu and selecting new game, and filling in the proper
   information.

                   A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF #CHESS

#chess is the undernet chess channel where people get together to play
chess. Foul language, and harrassing other people are not tolerated.
#chess is a CLEAN channel. Most of the people here are serious chess
players. The skill levels range from beginner to master, and there is
always a friendly atmosphere.

                        THE PEOPLE OF #CHESS

Here is a list of some of the regulars in #chess who should be able to
answer any question you have that may not have been covered in this
document:

Sigma nzsteve Jannett rejean Boogs Gandolf Roadkill
Predator Eddie Fabio Bud_Man Okies Keres Zaccai
Gilmour Aztec_

                            TOURNAMENTS

On occasion there are tourneys held in #chess. Right now I only know
of three people who run tourneys. Zaccai (know as TD_Zac when running
a tourney), Gilmour, and Bud_Man. So far Bud_Man's tourneys are by
far the biggest and draw the most attention. To be put on the waiting
list for a future Bud_Man tourney e-mail: johnpoz@cl.ais.net and ask
him to put you on his list.

                             HOMEPAGES

Here are a few channel related homepages:

Fabio is the creator of wschess and his homepage can be found at:
    http://www.moa.sonnet.com/jadiel

Bud_Man has the wschess homepage, and channel tourney related info at:
    http://www.cl.ais.net/johnpoz

rejean is the ratings keeper in #chess and his page is at:

                            DNS LOOKUPS

*NOTE* If you are using chat software that does no support DNS lookups
it is recommended that you get yourself a copy of mIRC. The
most current version of mIRC is 3.92 and it can be found on the
       web at:
           http://huizen.dds.nl/~mirc/
           or
           http://sunsite.nijenrode.nl/software/mirc/

mIRC is the most popular chat software available and it is FREE.

With mIRC a DNS lookup will show the results of the lookup in the
status window. It should look something like this:

   * Trying to resolve l24.redrose.net
   * Resolved l24.redrose.net to 134.26.346.10

Note: If you get a message like:

   * Trying to resolve l24.redrose.net
   * Unable to resolve l24.redrose.net

This type of message means that more than likely wschess will not be
able to connect to that IP address. It may be connected to the IRC
through a firewall or some other strange connection, and the other
computer may not be able to find a route to connect to it. A person
with an unresolvable IP may be able to connect to another person even
if he cannont host a game himself. (Connecting to another undernet
server might be worth a try)

                            #CHESS RATINGS

Ratings for the players of #chess can be found at:
   http://www.infobahnos.com/~rejean/rating.htm
If you would like to have your own name added to the ratings list
e-mail: gagnon@infobahnos.com and he will start you out with a 1200
rating. As you play games you will have to send the results to
rejean via email to get your rating updated.

                              GNN USERS

GNN users may have some difficulty getting mIRC to work on their
system because of GNN's unusual user verification process and the
fact that most undernet servers have banned all GNN subscribers.
If you have a GNN account, here are some tips to help you get mIRC
   up and running.

   1) GNN is a 16-bit net provider. Do not attempt to run mirc32.exe
with a GNN account even if you are running under Windows 95.
      Use the 16-bit mirc.exe instead.

   2) Click on the 3rd button from the left on the mIRC toolbar and
fill in the Name, E-Mail address, and Nick Name fields, then
      click on Add Server.

      Description: GNN Undernet Server
       IRC Server: irc.gnn.com
             Port: 6669
         Password: your gnn password

      Click Add, then click OK.

   3) The GNN Undernet Server will not allow mIRC to connect to the IRC
if the GNN Chat software is already running. Close GNN Chat then
click the left-most button of the mIRC toolbar to connect to the
      IRC.

   4) type /j #chess (or add #chess to your mIRC Channels Folder and
click on Join) to join the #chess channel.
