1) Introduction
----------------

My thanks to Christophe Bouton, Per Rasmussen, State University
of Novgorod, USCF page, Otto Borik, Rune Djurhuus, Adolivio Capece
Khaled Chehab, John Henderson, John Hurley, Li Riemersma,
Einar Einarsson, Moshe Shaked and Rob Van Aurich and all others that helped out
with this issue.

Another hot day in the UK leaves me wanting to finish as soon as
possible so apologies for any raggedness this week. The Novgorod 1996
Tournament is clearly the most important tournament of the week with
the US Chess Championships not far behind in importance. I gather
that the announcement of the FIDE ticket for Europe is taking place
this afternoon and I will report on that on my www page along with
further news from Bad Homburg.

There was a report last week at the end of the Kamsky-Karpov match
of a reunification Kasparov-Karpov match. It was said that Kasparov
had given his agreement to Makarov.
Bill Hartston in an unsourced comment in his Independent Chess column
says that Kasparov hasn't agreed to any such match. He say that
Kasparov comments that FIDE need to sort their problems out first.

James Marfia quotes Kasparov from a recent 64 Magazine article
(prior to this news) that "he, Kasparov, would play a
multi-million-dollar title match in 1997, and would have no trouble
finding a sponsor - i.e., whether FIDE was involved or not, whether
Karpov was playing him or not."

I hope you enjoy this issue whilst I try and cool down.

Mark Crowther

Lunch for reporters

Lunch for reporters, the first one within the history of the
super tournament, took place at Beresta Palace Hotel on July 19. The
reporters were greeted by Michail Skibar, the first vice-chairman of
the administartion of the city of Novgorod, Nikolai Semyonov, the
vice-chairman of the administration of Novgorod region, and Irina
Kibina, the director of the super tournament.

The guests exchanged opinions about traditional competitions with the
participation of the best grandmasters of the world. For example,
Viktor Troyanovsky, the authorized reporter for ITAR TASS, proposed
to establish some special prizes, such as to the youngest
participant, for the most attractive victory, for the wish to win.

Some words of Michail Skibar became "the chief news of the day". He
said that the city officials do not object against the organization
of a possible game between two great "K"s - Garry Kasparov and
Anatoly Karpov - on the banks of the Volkhov river.

Organizing the super tournament for the third time in a raw, Novgorod
has confirmed its ability to make the stay of the world best grandmasters
in the city of a high level.

V.Ivanchuk appeared at the end of the lunch. An unscheduled
press conference took place. The grandmaster was in his best moods.

Press conference and drawing of lots

The first press conference and drawing of lots of the participants took
place at Beresta Palace Hotel in the evening of July 19.

The following officials were present in the conference-hall: Michail
Skibar, the first vice-chairman of the city administration, Nikolai
Semyonov, the vice-chairman of the regional administration, Karsten
Bennika, the director of the joint-stock Company "Stimorol-Novgorod",
Irina Kibina, the director of the tournament.

The press conference lasted for 35 minutes. 14 questions were asked.
Last year only 7 questions were asked. The reporters working for the
first supertournament two years ago asked 16 questions - most of all.
A year ago only 4 grand masters out of 10 were interviewed. This time
all six grandmasters had to answer the questions. The charming Judit
Polgar had to answer 4 questions. Her mother, K.Polgar, and she got
luxurious flowers. This pleasant mission was done by Michael Skibar
and Nikolai Semyonov.

V.Ivanchuk was asked to evaluate in a nutshell the match between Anatoly Karpov
and Gata Kamsky for the title of the world champion according the FIDE versions.
The match has just been finished. The Ukranian grandmaster gave the
shortest answer in the a sense of humour: "The victory of boredom".

N.Short got the same 2nd order number at the sortition as last year.
Though his favorite figure is 7.

V.Ivanchuk got the same 5th number as last year. In 1994 he had the
first number.

Another participant of the tournament, Vladimir Kramnik, drew number
3. Last year he had 9 and the year before - 6.

V.Topalov got number 4. Last year he had the last 10th number.

Two participants of the super tournament who came here for the first
time got "edge" numbers: B.Gelfand got the 1st, J.Polgar - the 6th.

Last year all the lots were put just into souvenir birch-bark shoes
("lapti"). This time they were placed into... the dolls, made by a
professional craftswoman Irina Orlyankina. All the dolls were
beatiful and each of them had a unique dress made according to the
Russian tradition. It was a perfect gift for the grandmasters
reminding them about the ancient city of Novgorod.

Sortition was an unusual one. Its leader Irina Kibina told a
well-known tale about Vasilisa the Beauty. Five grandmasters were
titled "brave fellows" for the first time in their lives. J.Polgar
was called "the beauty".

Ceremony of opening

The ceremony of the super tournament opening took place at 2:00
p.m. on July 20 at the Drama Theater. The grandmasters and the judges appeared
on a stage decreated with the adds of the point-stock company "Stimorol-Novgorod".
They were accompanied by elegant girls - photomodels from the
photoagency "Image"

3) Interplay United States Chess Championships
-----------------------------------------------

A category 13 US Championships is taking place in Parsippany,
New Jersey. It is covered on the

http://www.websong.com/chess/uscf/

USCF Chess Page.

The United States Chess Championships are taking place in
Parsippany, New Jersey USA. The surprise leader at the half-way
stage is Tal Shaked the 18 year old 1995 US Junior Champion.

He was born in New Mexico USA and has lived in Tucson Arizona
during the last 15 years.

He was recently awarded the Samford Chess Fellowship (previous
receipients include Patrick Wolff, Joel Benjamin, and Gata
Kamsky). This fellowship is given annually, by the American
Chess Foundation, to a young US player to develop his/her talent.

Living in a relative chess desert, he has not, until recently,
worked extensively with any leading chess teacher. In the past,
occasionally, before or after an out-of-town chess tournament, he
has tried to get a lesson or two from a leading GM. Thus, for
example, he spent once a couple of hours with Michael Adams, and
a little more with Kaidanov, Yermolinsky, and D. Gurevich. Only
recently he started having serious chess studies with IM John
Watson (the French Defence authority) of San Diego.

His last tournament, about three weeks ago, was the 1996 US Junior.
It was not a successful one: he ended it with 4.5/11.

[Information from his father Moshe Shaked]

The field bunched after seven rounds when both Tal Shaked and his
closest rival Alex Yermolinsky both lost.

The women's event is lead by Anjelina Belakovskaia. I believe Anna
Gulko has just returned to chess after many years and probably
has a lapsed ELO rating. (right at the back of my mind I seem to
remember that she was denied a place in the Women's Interzonal
whilst she was still in Russia after the Russians reversed the
result of one of her games) If I remember rightly then she used
to be one of the very best women's players.

6) 1996 Norwegian Championships by Rune Djurhuus
---------------------------------------------

Rune Djurhuus has a report in Norwegian on his www pages:

http://www.ifi.uio.no/~runed/sjakk.html

"The strongest ever Norwegian Championship (at least in the number of
GMs participating) was held 6-13. July 1996 in the town Alta in the
very north of Norway. 16 players played 9 round Swiss in the top group
while all together 299 chess players participated in 12 different
groups.

The top group faced a close race between the three GMs. GM Rune
Djurhuus got off to a flying start with four wins in a row, but in an
extremely well played 6th round game, GM Einar Gausel caught up with
the leader after Djurhuus had chosen an unfortunate variation when
confronted with Gausel's Alechin defence which he played for the first
time in his life (in a tournament game).

GM Gausel and last years winner GM Jonathan Tisdall had a half point
lead to GM Djurhuus before the 9th and last round. Djurhuus won quite
easily while Tisdall only got a draw from three-times former champion
Berge Ostenstad which wasn't in his best form this year.

Then all was up to Gausel who played the raising star, 16 year old
Leif Elrlend Johannessen. Gausel was up to the task and in
Johannessen's time trouble, 32 year old Gausel launched an attack on
Whites king which netted 3 pawns and soon after the game. So Gausel
had won his second Norwegian title, while Tisdall, undefeated, got the
silver medal on better Bucholtz, ahead of Djurhuus."

8) News from Italy by Adolivio Capece.
-----------------------------------

For the men's Olympiad Team: GM Igor Efimov will be the non-playing
captain.

Players involved are: IM Michele Godena, IM Carlo D'Amore, IM Ennio
Arlandi, IM Bruno Belotti, IM Tullio Marinelli, IM Stefano Tatai, IM
Spartaco Sarno and IM Giulio Borgo. The official decision about the "six"
will be made next week.
The women team will also play. Mr Nicola Palladino (Fide member) will be
either the reprensentative for Italy in the Fide Congress and the captain
of the women team.
Italy will make application for GM title for Michele Godena. Moreover our
Federation will try again to have the honorary GM title to Enrico Paoli,
the "father" of the famous Reggio Emilia Tournament; he is 88 years old
and we are sure that he deserve this acknowledgemnt.
I have not official position in the Italian Federation or in Fide, but I
hope that all the chessplayers reading this text will support the request
of the Italian Federation by contacting their own national federation.
Thanks in advance to everybody.

Last information: probably we will have a great event at the end of the
year (december, 1-20) in Turin; tournaments, exibitions, Internet links,
computer games etc. Details follow as soon as possible.

Adolivio Capece <ad.capece@agora.stm.it> is editor of L'Italia Scacchistica.

L'Italia Scacchistica is one of the oldest chess magazine in Europe and
probably in the world: it is 85 years old! It is regularly printed since
1911; I am the editor since 1992, following Mr Giovanni Ferrantes. The
first editor was the chess Master Stefano Rosselli del Turco.
The magazine is printed monthly; it is printed in full colours. We cover
all the sections of chess: games (usually annotated; among our
regular contributors Mr Karpov and Mr Tiviakov); studies (by E.Paoli),
problems (direct and helpmate, with a yearly contest free to everibody),
history, correspondance section (with international open tournaments),
endgames, news and curiosity (for example: do you know that the rockstar
Sting is a good chessplayer? Sometimes we have articles and interwiew
with such VIP). The magazine is written in Italian, but every now and
then we publish some summary in English. The yearly subscription costs
Italian Lire 100.000 (about 70 US dollars or 100 DM) or It.Lire 150.000
(100 US dollars or 150 DM) for air-mail mailing.
Sometimes we have also the opportunity to have old books for sale; for
example now we have one copy each of three different editions of the
famous ancient book of Ponziani. But we can help people in finding old
books on request.

9) Asian cities tournament by Khaled Chehab

The Asian cities tournament was very well financed and
the level of the participants was high. There is a great chess
boom happening in the Gulf. The Arab countries have a high degree
of interest and there are a lot af competitions. There are schools
are being started. These countries are importing international
trainers from all over the world and paying them incredible amounts
of money.
The famous Russian GM, Gennadi Kuzmin of Russia is today the personal
trainer of Mohamad Almodaihiki, IM 2445 and also the whole team of Qatar.
Also in the Emirates Kurajica and lately Mershad Sherif and a lot others

financial support.

The new under 20 arab champion, Taleb Moussa from Dubai got a reward of
100,000 dirham approx. $30,000 and the same amount for his club as well.
They are also preparing well for the next olympiad.

The time control was as follows:

Dubai cup,9 rounds 1hr for 1st 23 moves and then 1 hr k.o.
Then followed another tournament, Jotun cup 30 min /player

11) 1996 Scottish Championships by John Henderson
---------------------------------------------

International Master Douglas Bryson, 39, from Shettleston, Glasgow, is the
winner of the 1996 Scottish Championship played at the Corran Halls in Oban
with a score of 7/9. Needing to win in the last round against Paul Brown
from Edinburgh University, Bryson showed the form that he produced in the
first half of the tournament to win with ease. Bryson has been a regular
player in the championship since the late 70's and this has been the first
time he has won the event.

Second place was FM John Shaw from Kilmarnock who beat Jim Stevenson from
Finchley. Third place went to pre-tournament favourite, GM Colin McNab
from Dundee, with 6/9 after a last round draw with Jonathan Grant from
Edinburgh.

The Scottish Championship Trophy and first prize of L400 was presented
to Mr Bryson by local MP, Ray Michie, at the prize-giving ceremony at
the Corran Halls.

12) Irish National championships by John Hurley
-------------------------------------------

In the tightest finish for several years, three players tied for first at the
Morris Insulations Irish Senior championship in Dublin last weekend. Final
round wins by Tom Clarke (black against Mark Heidenfeld), Richard
O'Donovan (black against Gerry O'Connell) and Colm Daly (white against
overnight leader Mark Quinn) left the three victors on 6.5/9 half-a-point
clear of the field. On tiebreak, the official 1996 Irish champion is Richard
O'Donovan who had a remarkable tournament starting with five straight wins,
then losing two games in a row before recovering to post a draw and a win in
the concluding rounds. The surprise champion also picked up the best game prize
for his win against Heidenfeld. Tom Clarke opted for a different
route to shared first starting modestly but finishing with four straight wins.
His welcome return to form included an important novelty in the French Defence
Advance Variation used to victorious effect against this correspondent and a
fascinating endgame struggle in which he prevailed over co-winner O'Donovan.
Finally, and not before time, Colm Daly managed to get his name on the trophy
after a protracted bout of strategic attrition against number one seed Mark
Quinn in the last game of the tournament to finish. Nineteen-year-old
Quinn will undoubtedly have his day in years to come while Daly has gone a
long way to banishing the ghosts of previous years notably 1993 when the
title slipped out of his hands in the seventh hour.

Individual results have been compiled and certified by Steen Juul Mortensen,
special supervisor of the competition, according to the formal regulation.
Players involved are asked to apologise that wrong NGP-points were published at
first due to the fact that draft version of the regulation had been used by
mistake earlier on. The correct regulation for the Nordic Grand Prix Tournament
Series is published on the "Chess in Iceland" WWW home page.

The 3rd VISA NORDIC GRAND PRIX tournament will be held in Norway as a part of
the Gausdal Chess Festival and Arnold J. Eikrems Memorial Tournament, 3-11
August, the 4th one in Sweden, as a part of The Rilton Cup in Stockholm, 27
Dec.96 - 7. Jan. 97 and the 5th one in the Faeroe Islands, as a part of the
Torshavn Open in February 1997.

The best results and individual performance from 3 out of 5 NGP tournaments
count for qualification to the Final Nordic Grand Prix, a Round Robin
tournament of 14 players with formidable prize fund, which is planned to be
held in Reykjavik, Iceland, in the autumn of 1997. In case of a tie results
from the fourth and if needed fifth tournament will count. Further tie will be
broken by lot. The 14 and last seat will be filled by special invitation.

Reykjavik, 18 July 1996 - Einar S. Einarsson, Chief Administrative Officer of
