4.0 About the Characters/Actors

-------
4.01 JOHN LITHGOW (Dr. Dick Solomon )
-------

DICK SOLOMON

The High Commander a.k.a. 'Dr. Dick Solomon' has established
himself as a physics professor at Pendleton, a small Ohio college.

He is the eccentric leader of the alien mission to study Earth's
inhabitants. Dick is in love with Dr. Albright, an associate at
the college where he teaches. He doesn't know what to do about
it, because love is a foreign concept to the alien commander. He
has also discovered that he is very bad at lying or at hiding any
of his emotions at all. At the end of the first season (just as
he'd finally achieved a romantic relationship with Dr. Albright!)
he was replaced and imprisoned in the basement by the Anti-Dick
or "Such" who was sent by The Big Giant Head.

Although he did not receive national attention until his Oscar
-nominated portrayal of Roberta Muldoon in "The World
According to Garp" in 1982, John Lithgow, born on an October
19th to a theatrical family in Rochester, NY, made his stage
debut at age 6 in "Henry VI, Part III" with Ellis Rabb.

Lithgow received a second Academy Award nomination for his
portrayal of Debra Winger's lover in the Oscar-winning "Terms
of Endearment" in 1983. His feature-film credits also include
"Memphis Belle," "Footloose," "Buckaroo Banzai," "Blow Out,"
"Twilight Zone: The Movie," "All That Jazz," "Raising Cain,"
"The Manhattan Project," "Harry and the Hendersons," "Distant
Thunder," "At Play in the Fields of the Lord," "Cliffhanger,"
"A Good Man in Africa," "The Pelican Brief," "Princess
Caraboo" and "Silent Fall" with director Bruce Beresford.

An Emmy Award winner for his 1987 performance in an edition
("The Doll") of Steven Spielberg's "Amazing Stories," Lithgow
also earned Emmy nominations for his work in the television
movies "The Day After" and Hallmark Hall of Fame's "The
Resting Place." His other television credits include the live
broadcast of "The Oldest Living Graduate" with Henry Fonda; a
PBS production of the Dorothy Parker story "Big Blond" with
Sally Kellerman; and the TV movies "The Last Elephant," "The
Wrong Man," "The Boys" and, most recently, "My Brother's
Keeper."

A Harvard graduate, Lithgow won a Fulbright Scholarship and
used it to study at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic
Art before settling in New York to pursue a stage career. He
received a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award for his Broadway
debut in "The Changing Room." From 1973 to 1982, he performed
in a different Broadway play each season. He was nominated for
a Tony in 1985 for his performance in "Requiem for a
Heavyweight." In 1986, he received rave reviews when he
returned to Broadway to star in "The Front Page," and in 1988
he earned a third Tony nomination for his performance in "M.
Butterfly."

Lithgow lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Mary, a history
professor at UCLA, and their daughter, Phoebe and son, Nathan.
Lithgow also has a son, Ian, from a previous marriage.

4.02 KRISTEN JOHNSTON (Sally Solomon)
-------

SALLY SOLOMON

Second in command, The Lieutenant AKA 'Sally Solomon" is a
seasoned military officer who has incinerated entire armies.

When The Lieutenant asked why Dick had decided to make Sally a
woman, Dick shrugged, "You lost." The cover story is that Sally
is Dick's sister. She has had a disastrous date, a very
successful bake sale and is now in the midst of an evolving
relationship with Mr. Randall (a teacher at Tommy's school).
Sally has held jobs, but does not generally work because it is
their perceived image that as a woman her job is to clean and
cook (I think they viewed a little too much Nick at Night before
they came to earth). She is great-looking and knows it, has a
flair for fashion and a direct, no nonsense attitude.
---

KRISTEN JOHNSTON

From: The NBC Web Site
<http://www.nbc.com/ entertainment/shows/rock/index.html>

"Sally is really the 'right-hand man' to the alien mission
leader played by John Lithgow," says Kristen Johnston, who
portrays Sally Solomon, the alien posing as a sexy, Ohio,
female human on "3rd Rock from the Sun." "She's a dame, a
serious, business-like, tough chick," Johnston observes,
proving that appearances on earth are deceiving.

Like the alien's alias, Sally, Johnston was raised in the
Midwest, in Milwaukee, WI, with her younger sister and older
brother, although she was born (on a Sept. 20) in Washington,
DC.

She spent a large part of her teens traveling as an exchange
student to Sweden and South America.

While earning her B.F.A. degree at New York University in
drama, Johnston appeared in college stage productions before
making her professional stage debut with the Atlantic Theatre
Co, founded by playwright David Mamet. During her long
association with that theatre company in New York's Chelsea
District, the company featured her in such productions as
"Overruled," "As You Like It," "Girl's Talk," "Five Very
Live," "Stage Door," "Author's Voice," "Portrait of a Woman,"
"Boy's Life" and "Rosemary for Remembrance." In addition she
has performed with the Naked Angels Theatre Company in "The
Stand In" and "Hot Keys," and with New York Stage and Film in
"Kim's Sister" with David Strathairn and Jane Adams.

Johnston was nominated for a Drama Desk Award as Best
Supporting Actress for her performance in "The Lights" at
Lincoln Center Theatre. That show brought her to the attention
of a Carsey-Werner executive casting "3rd Rock," and after
numerous auditions, she landed the role of Sally.

Her television credits include guest-starring roles on the
series "Chicago Hope," "Heart's Afire" and "The Five Mrs.
Buchanans."

Johnston made her feature film debut in "The Debt," winner of
Best Short at the Cannes Film Festival in 1993.

A recent "transplant" from New York, Johnston resides in Los
Angeles with her dog.

4.03 FRENCH STEWART (Harry Solomon)
-------

HARRY SOLOMON

'Harry Solomon' doesn't seem to have a particular job in the
aliens' mission. He plays Dick's younger brother.

Harry has a unqiue perspective on everything. He can appear very
stupid at times, but it is this unqiue perspective that allows
him to make discoveries that the others would never have made.
Harry has never kept a job long, but he keeps trying. He has
worked at a diner, a video store, a department store and a gay
bar. He has never had much expected of him from the rest of the
team and has a similarly low self esteem. However, he is an
accomplished artist, an avid observer of television and quite the
dancer. Towards the end of the first season we have also found
out that Harry has a radio transmitter implanted in his skull
through which they communicate with The Big Giant Head.

FRENCH STEWART

From: The NBC Web Site
<http://www.nbc.com/ entertainment/shows/rock/index.html>

"Harry is a broad-based character drawn from silent films, of
which I have a huge collection," says French Stewart, whose
performance as the laconic, odd-ball alien with the alias of
Harry on NBC's "3rd Rock from the Sun" is another in a string
of his strange and quirky television roles.

Stewart, who was born on February 20th, grew up in his native
Albuquerque, NM, where his mother is a homemaker and his step
-father works at a technological laboratory. "They are so
enthusiastic and encouraging whenever they see me on TV," he
says of the support he gets from his family. His unusual first
name has been used in his family for generations -- he's the
fourth French.

After attending West Texas State for a year, Stewart was
graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, with a
B.F.A in Theater Arts. He then spent seven years touring in
regional theatre and appearing in productions such as
"Macbeth" and "Much Ado About Nothing."

His first professional acting assignment was as Yogi Bear with
Hannah-Barbara's Shakey Quakey Tour, which toured the United
States, appearing at state fairs and conventions. The job
helped him to earn his Screen Actors Guild card, although he
was fired soon afterwards for pulling his bear head off in
front of the children.

Stewart's additional theater credits include performances in
the Los Angeles productions of "Pot Mom" and Justin Tanner's
"Party Mix" and "Happy Times Xmas," all of which earned him
theater awards from the publication L.A. Weekly.

He made his television debut in a guest-starring role on "The
New WKRP in Cincinnati," and his additional TV credits include
a recurring role on "The Boys Are Back," guest-starring on
NBC's "Seinfeld" and portraying "the weird intern" on "The
Larry Sanders Show".

After making his feature film debut in "The Poison Tasters" at
the Cannes Film Festival, Stewart appeared in the films
"Broken Arrow" and "Stargate." His upcoming releases include
"Cruise" and "Leaving Las Vegas" with Nicholas Cage.

Stewart, who is single, lives in Los Angeles with his 2 dogs.

Andrew Gavin says it rumored that French Stewart is 32 years
old.

4.04 JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT (Tommy Solomon)
-------

TOMMY SOLOMON

The Intelligence Officer is older than Dick, but his human
body is that of a teenager, and he plays Dick's son Tommy.

Tommy created the cover story of the Solomon Family and the
false documentation with which to pull off the scam. Although
the first version was only one month back (he had a book report
due) and had to be revised. His body has had the most emotional
baggage to deal with, but his elder wisdom and maturity has led
him to cope admirably. He lacks the understanding of the social
rules of his age group (he is posing as a high school freshman),
particularly among males. However his intelligence, sensitivity
and blatant lust has attracted an array of teenage girls. We
have yet to see a male friend of Tommy's, but his semi-steady
girlfriend, August, is a constant source of lust and frustration
for him. All he wants to do is figure out what it is that she
wants and do it. It all sounds so simple....
---

JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT

From: The NBC Web Site
<http://www.nbc.com/ entertainment/shows/rock/index.html>

Joseph Gordon-Levitt was 6 years old and singing in a
children's choir when a manager asked to be able to represent
him. His parents conveyed that request to Joey, who agreed
enthusiastically, and he had his first agent and his first
acting job (a regional peanut butter commercial) before he was
6 and a half. One week later, Joey made his TV film debut
playing Tommy Lee Jones' son in "Stranger on My Land."

A native of Southern California, 14-year-old Joey has amassed
TV credits that include guest-starring roles on "Family Ties,"
"thirtysomething," "Murder, She Wrote," "China Beach,"
"Quantum Leap" and the TV films "The Great Elephant Escape"
and "Gregory K." On an episode of "L.A. Law," he played an
autistic child with cerebral palsy whose mother wanted to
enroll him in a special school for challenged children. He has
also had a recurring role on "Roseanne" as D.J.'s boring
friend, George.

Joey has been a regular on two NBC series: he was David
Collins on the revival of "Dark Shadows;" and the son of a
congressman (played by David Hyde Pierce of NBC's "Frasier")
in Norman Lear's "The Powers That Be."

He made his feature film debut in "A River Runs Through It,"
playing the young Norman. Joey has since starred in
"Roadkillers," "Holy Matrimony," "The Juror" and "Angels in
the Outfield," for which he received the Hollywood Reporter's
YoungStar Award as best actor in a feature film.

Away from the set and school, Joey enjoys such activities as
gymnastics, flag football and rollerblading. His other
interests include playing guitar, Dungeons & Dragons, reading
sci-fi fantasy books and spending time with his dogs. Born on
a February 17, Joey and his family live in Southern
California.

4.05 JANE CURTIN (Dr. Mary Albright)
-------

DR. MARY ALBRIGHT

Dr. Mary Albright is human. She is an anthropology professor
who shares Dick Solomon's office at the university.

Dr. Mary Albright was quite a flower child in her youth, but has
still never seen anything quite like Dr. Solomon. At their first
meeting he insulted her work and then later simultaneously
apologized and propositioned her. His candor is endearing, but
he can be annoying and very hard to be around. She and Nina have
worked together for awhile and have a close working relationship
as well as a strong friendship. Mary has not had the best luck
with men and has many disastrous relationships, but appears (as
of yet) to have never been married or had any children. However,
she does have a brother, Roy, who sells aluminum siding and is a
constant embarrassment to her.
---

JANE CURTIN

From: The NBC Web Site
<http://www.nbc.com/entertainment/shows/rock/index.html>

Two-time Emmy winner Jane Curtin gained national attention
when she made her TV debut in 1975 as one of the original
members of the Not Ready for Prime Time Players on the hit NBC
late-night series "Saturday Night Live." During her five-year
run on that show, she received critical acclaim and two Emmy
nominations for her creation of an assortment of memorable
characters, including the anchor on "Weekend Update" and the
mother of the "Conehead" family.

She starred with Susan Saint James for five years on the
popular television series "Kate and Allie," twice earning the
Emmy Award as Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series (1984,
1985) for her portrayal of affable divorcee Allie Lowell.

Curtin's other television credits include the critically
acclaimed mini-series "Common Ground"; the TV movies "Divorce
Wars" with Tom Selleck and "Maybe Baby" with Dabney Coleman;
and the specials "Bob and Ray & Jane, Laraine and Gilda" and
"30 Years of Comedy's Greatest Hits." Her feature-film
credits include "The Coneheads," "How to Beat the High Cost
of Living," "Suspicion," "Mr. Mike's Mondo Video" and "O.C.
and Stiggs."

Born on a September 6 and raised in Cambridge, MA, Curtin
studied drama at Northeastern University. She was a member of
the improvisational theater group The Proposition for four
years before going on a national tour with a number of plays,
including the comedy "Last of the Red Hot Lovers." She
appeared on Broadway as Prossie in George Bernard Shaw's
"Candida," with Joanne Woodward, and reprised the role on
television. Her other stage credits include the Off-Broadway
musical revue "Pretzels," which she co-authored, and several
appearances in A.R. Gurney's "Love Letters."

Curtin lives in Connecticut with her husband and their
daughter.

4.06 SIMBI KHALI (Nina)
-------

NINA CAMPBELL

Nina is the opinionated and smart secretary at the university
for Dr. Albright (mostly) and Dr. Solomon.

Nina is a side character, and as such, we have not found out much
about her as of yet. There does seem to be a strong loyalty to
Dr. Albright. When Dr. Albright was to leave the office, it was
unquestioned, Nina went with her and was not expected to work
with Dr. Solomon anymore. Nina seems to have known and worked
with Dr. Albright before. They often eat lunch together and go
to outside activities like the Women's discussion group.

SIMBI KHALI

From: The NBC Web Site
<http://www.nbc.com/ entertainment/shows/rock/index.html>

Nina Simbi Khali plays Nina, the assistant to college
professors Dr. Albright (Jane Curtin) and Dr. Solomon (John
Lithgow) who often finds herself in the roles of referee and
translator between them.

The youngest of seven children, Khali was born in Jackson, MS,
and raised in Chicago, IL. She attended the Duke Ellington
School of Arts High School and then continued her education at
the California Institute of Arts, where she was graduated with
a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in acting.

Her television credits include guest-starring roles on the
series "Martin" and "Sinbad". In addition, she was a regular
on the series "She TV," a series from both the "3rd Rock"
executive producers Bonnie and Terry Turner and the
Carsey-Werner Company. She is most proud of her Michael
Jackson impersonation on the show.

Among her feature film credits are appearing opposite Eddie
Murphy and Angela Bassett in the upcoming "A Vampire in
Brooklyn" directed by Wes Craven and "A Thin Line Between
Love and Hate" directed by and starring Martin Lawrence.

Her stage credits include performances in regional productions
of "The Colored Museum," "For Colored Girls...," "A Midsummer
Night's Dream" and "Troilus and Cressida."

Born on an April 28, Khali resides in Los Angeles where in her
spare time her interests include running, camping, reading and
writing.

4.07 ELMARIE WENDEL (Mrs. Dubcek)
-------

MRS. DUBCEK

Mrs. Dubcek is the divorced/widowed landlord for the Solomons.

She has had a colorful past and gives the Solomons occasional
advice and information about humans. For instance, it was she
who helped them realize they were Jewish. She is of Slavic
heritage, has had 3 husbands and has buried at least one of them.

ELMARIE WENDEL

From: The NBC Web Site
<http://www.nbc.com/ entertainment/shows/rock/index.html>

Elmarie Wendel, who plays Mrs. Dubcek, the landlady on NBC's "3rd
Rock From the Sun," and her daughter, J.C., have a "close working
and living relationship." Both mother and daughter work on the
same Los Angeles production lot on network television series,
although their series appear on competing networks. J.C. is a
series regular on "Dave's World," and not only does it film a few
soundstages away from "3rd Rock," but both performers reside
within minutes of each other.

Born on a farm in Iowa, Wendel comes from a show-business family.
She spent her childhood traveling throughout the Midwest with her
musician father and her two sisters: their family act had the
girls dancing onstage at movie theaters to their father's musical
accompaniment before the films began.

As an adult, Wendel appeared on the legitimate stage on Broadway,
performing in productions such as "Wonderful Town," "Copper &
Brass," "Cole Porter Revisited" and "Little Mary Sunshine." After
she became a single mother, she decided to join a touring company
of "Annie," which took her to California where she preferred to
raise her daughter.

Wendel has had guest-starring roles on such series as "The
Jeffersons," "The Facts of Life," "Murder, She Wrote," "Love and
War" and NBC's "Seinfeld." Her TV film credits include the cable
movies "And the Band Played On" and "Far From Home."

Her feature-film credits include "Going Under," "The
Immortalizers" and "Transplant." Wendel's birthday is November 23.

Leon is a painfully shy student of Dr. Solomon.

Leon is often wrong, but underestimated by both himself and Dr.

him. Also, he and Sally almost had to repopulate the earth
during a snowstorm and blackout (in Frozen Dick).

MR. RANDALL

Mr. Kevin Randall is a teacher at Tommy's High School.

He's dating Sally, who he met in "Dick Like Me". He's sensitive,
but bewildered and amazed by Sally. We do not know much about
him, but he has a truly forceful and assertive mother.
