Welcome to the newly-revised Smashing Pumpkins FAQ! :) Changes/updates from
the previous main release/version are marked by a '*'. Please read this
entire FAQ before posting- it contains a large amount of information compiled
over a long period of time, and will save a lot of time covering basic info.
:)

If you're new to Usenet, or if you haven't read them, *PLEASE* read the
articles in the newsgroup "news.announce.newusers". It contains a lot of
helpful information about how newsgroups work, how to write meaningful posts,
where to find information, etc. -Everyone- should read these.

The html version of the FAQ has been rearranged again to fit Luna's new look.
Check out Luna at http://www.cae.wisc.edu/~agnew/sp/

1. -General-

1.1 General newsgroup info

The Smashing Pumpkins newsgroup is obviously a place to discuss the
Smashing Pumpkins. :) Topics range from lyrical discussions to trading to
new info, and lots of other things. As long as the discussion basically
sticks to SP, things should work out nicely. Try to avoid non-SP related
threads, especially if they're massively crossposted. A large number of
off-topic messages makes it harder to find relative information, and the
overall quality and readability of the newsgroup declines...

1.2 How to get on/off the mailing list

To subscribe to Listessa, the SP mailing list, send a message to
listproc@cc.umanitoba.ca with the following message body:

                subscribe smashing-pumpkins (your name)

Insert your name (omit parentheses) and disregard the subject line. If
all goes well, you will soon get a welcome message, which will include the
  Listessa FAQ, also available at
  http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~miller1/listessa/listessa-faq.html.

-=READ THIS!=- It contains the rules/guidelines of the list, as well as
  other special instructions.

To post to the list, simply reply to any of its messages, or start a new
  message addressed to: smashing-pumpkins@cc.umanitoba.ca

Now, since so many people seem to lose their brain when it comes to
getting OFF the list, here's how to unsubscribe, straight from Karl:

  -=-=-
How to unsubscribe from the Smashing Pumpkins Mailing List - V 1.0b
By Karl R. Daher, Maintainer of the "Smashing Pumpkins" Mailing List

To unsubscribe from the SP mailing list, send a letter to
   LISTPROC@cc.umanitoba.ca (***NOT*** smashing-pumpkins@cc.umanitoba.ca)
with the following, and ***ONLY*** the following, in the body of the
   letter:
                         unsub smashing-pumpkins

Do ***NOT*** include your e-mail address, a signature file, the name of
your pet hamster, or any other information in the letter.

Please note: after you unsubscribe, you will receive a letter saying
'Thanks for being with us.' You may still receive a few letters from the
list after this. Do not be alarmed, this is normal. If, a day later, you
are still getting letters, and you are sure you have followed the
instructions correctly, feel free to write Karl_Daher@mbnet.mb.ca for
help. I log in one or two times a day to maintain the list.

   PLEASE SAVE THIS LETTER!!!
  -=-=-

Do NOT post a message to the list asking how to get off, or asking to be
taken off. It's very annoying, and usually doesn't result in much, except
  flames & wasted space.

Another thing to do is Change The Subject Line. It's very annoying to see
messages with "Re: SMASHING-PUMPKINS Digest #2015", etc. A good subject
line should reflect the content of the message.

For more help/info on the listproc server & software, send a message to
listproc@cc.umanitoba.ca with simply the body "help" as your message.

1.3 General netiquette, etc.

As with other newsgroups, there are certain things you just shouldn't
do. First off, do not post make.money.fast or any of its variants. Yes,
they really are illegal, besides being incredibly annoying, especially
when long meta-threads develop over them.

Ignore trolls and flamebaits. If someone comes in and mindlessly flames
the band, or says something blatantly offensive, ignore it. They're
probably not even going to see the response, and all it will do is
generate more off-topic messages with very little relevant content.

If you're discussing other groups, remember that everyone in the world
has this thing called a personal opinion, which, believe it or not, may be
different from your own! :) Try to avoid statements like "That band
sucks!" or "How can you listen to that shit?" What you consider bad,
someone else may consider a favorite. Remember that some people can't
stand SP. You wouldn't want to hear about that, right? Likewise, don't
bash other bands that some others may happen to like. Don't flame people
for their own personal opinions- it's just plain stupid. :)

Check the newsgroups: line before posting. If it has a lot of newsgroups
listed in it, trim it down to only include those relevant to your post.
Massive crossposting is a major waste of Usenet resources, and only
generates more off-topic flames and complaints. If you're using a
newsreader that doesn't show headers, keep in mind that a message you're
reading on the Smashing Pumpkins newsgroup may also be posted to a large
number of other newsgroups, most likely in the alt.music.* hierarchy.

Try to avoid the new-fan-bashing mentality. Just because you may have
been a die-hard fan since before Gish, it doesn't mean that someone who
started listening to them yesterday isn't as worthy of a fan. Everyone has
  to start somewhere...

Another thing: Please READ the newsgroup/list before posting to it. If
you hear a rumor of earth-shattering importance, chances are that someone
else has heard it too. If someone has already posted some information,
there's no need to post it again. Having 100 copies of the same info
  really doesn't benefit anyone.

Do not post messages like "Omigod, my friend just told me Billy died in
a car accident!!" If something like that were to happen, you'd hear it on
the news, on the radio, on MTV, and the entire newsgroup and mailing list
would be in complete chaos, so there's really no need to ask.
Unfortunately, we found this out in a rather disturbing way- it's exactly
what happened when SP's touring keyboardist, Jonathan Melvoin, died on
  Friday, July 12, 1996...

1.4 Subject Lines

You may occasionally see some 3/4-letter signs at the beginning of a
subject line. This was suggested to me by Josh Sherman
(jsherman@u.washington.edu), and it seemed like a really good idea, so here
  it is...

The basic concept is that it's easier to follow threads when you know
what they're going to be about. So we use little abbreviations that tell
what the message will be about. One can't always count on "Re: SP" to be a
very on-topic or informative post. So there are little tags to put in.

Josh's ideas basically just entailed the use of "Disc:" and "Tan:" to
distinguish whether there was actual "legitimate," directly-related-to-SP
topics, or whether it was off on a wild tangent.

I have come up with a few more, and hopefully they'll be of good use.
Some of these are used for than others, and they haven't quite caught on
yet, but we might as well hope. They are somewhat useful, at
  least...

FS: For Sale- if you want to sell your SP material (nothing else), or if
you are willing to pick up stuff for other people (see 4.8)

ISO: If you want to see if someone can get something for you (see 4.8)

Tan: Off on a tangent to something kinda-related, but not really...

Lyr: Indicates that the article will contain lyrics, or discussion of them

Req: Request for tablature, lyrics, etc. (please check web sites first, as
there is a LOT that's already out there that can be easily found with
       a little searching) :)

  Site: WWW/ftp site announcement/pointer-to, etc.

Tab: Does the same for guitar tablature (this is usually done already)

Q: When someone has a question they want answered

Ans: When someone answers that question (easier to find than Re: Q, since
if the Ans: is there, you'll know it's been answered, instead of just
"Ooh! I wanna know, too!" ;)

  WTD: Wanted (see "ISO")

  WTB: Wanted To Buy (")

1.5 What are all those acronyms/abbreviations, etc?

Usually, the name Smashing Pumpkins is abbreviated to
either "'Pumpkins" or just plain old "SP." Other acronyms
are for songs, albums, etc. Here's a few common ones, the rest can usually
  be figured out (i.e. songs):

amsp (or a.m.s-p) The newsgroup, alt.music.smash-pumpkins

BC Billy Corgan, the Great Pumpkin himself... :)

BwBW Bullet w/ Butterfly Wings (the song/single)

CR Cherub Rock (the song, CDS, or 7")

DD Double Door- the tiny venue they played at in February '95 (see 5.1)

MCIS (or MC&IS, or MCatIS, etc.) Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness,
the new album (duh!), or the song

  ng newsgroup

NP: Now Playing (used at the end of a message to indicate what you're
  listening to at the moment.)

PI Pisces Iscariot, their b-sides compilation release from 10/94

PS Context-sensitive. Could be Peel Sessions (a 3-track EP), Pumpkin
Seeds (a bootleg), or Purr Snickety, the rare Cherub Rock 7" B-side

SD Siamese Dream (usually the album, although may mean the actual song)

  SP Smashing Pumpkins

(sp?) (Spelling?) -indicated someone is unsure of their spelling

TOASE Tales of a Scorched Earth (song on MCIS)

1.6 What's an "ObSP"?

Most people don't like to read messages that have nothing whatsoever to do
with SP (esp. in the SP newsgroup and mailing list). The "Ob" is short
for Obligatory, and so an ObSP would just be a short statement about SP in
a message that would otherwise have very little to do w/ SP, so that the
article/message doesn't remain void of their discussion... It is an
especially good idea to use an ObSP in an otherwise largely-tangential
  message...

1.7 What's the EZine?

The EZine was an Electronic Magazine put out by Allison Baird. There are
two issues out now, which are both available on my web site. Rumor
has it that someone else will be taking over and making new issues... :)

  http://www.cae.wisc.edu/~agnew/sp/articles/

1.8 Questions NOT to ask under ANY circumstance.

Under no circumstance should anyone ask any of the following questions:

-What's that Depeche Mode cover? (Where, etc.)
-How do I get on/off the mailing list?
-When are they touring in my city?

These have come up SO often that they will piss off many people when
mentioned (including me). :) The DM/NLMDA question has died a bit now, but
the other questions haven't. Actually, they've gotten SO frequent and
obnoxious that I've made a MiniFAQ (Frequent, Annoying Questions) that
gets posted whenever necessary (i.e. when a lot of frequent, annoying
  questions are posted.) :)

Getting on and off the mailing list is covered in the Listessa FAQ,
  available at http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~miller1/listessa/listessa-faq.html

Theoretically, anyone who gets on the list should be able to get off
easily, but many people forget anyway... If this happens to you, please do
not ask. Look it up yourself on the Official Listessa web site
(http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~miller1/listessa/), in this FAQ, or by getting the
info from the list processor. To do this, simply send a message to
listproc@cc.umanitoba.ca with the message body "info smashing-pumpkins".

Finally, as far as a tour, check Josh Sherman's web site. It will list
all known tour dates. If it's not there yet, it means we don't know yet.
So it's pointless to ask. :)

  http://weber.u.washington.edu/~jsherman/tour.html

Please. Don't ask these questions. You'll most likely be ignored or flamed
if you do. If you have a seemingly obvious question, it's likely been
answered a billion times before, and the answer is very likely to be
easily found by looking around a bit and reading web sites...

1.9 Threads you shouldn't bring up again (aka "Look what I just
     discovered!")

The following threads have run through at LEAST a dozen times before-
we REALLY don't need to hear it AGAIN:

-"Tristessa" means "sadness" in Spanish, French, Italian, Latin, etc.
(actual spellings may vary slightly), and was the title of a book by Jack
  Kerouac.

-"Soma" was a drug in the book Brave New World, greek for "body", a
legendary place where people sleep for a billion years, various religious
entities, and about a million other things. We've heard it before. Lots of
  times. :P"

-If you hold up the back of the PI CD to the light, you can see Billy
through the white thingy on the other side, or he lights up if you look
through the other way. I should have put this in here LONG ago. According
to someone who works with the band, BC said it was a complete accident.

-The same trick works for the front liner with the fish pan & the flip
side, where the necklace seen through the other page looks like an eye.
Wow. This has been noticed many times before.

-"[song x] must be about Kurt Cobain" - please. We don't need to hear it.
Billy writes about himself. The feelings and lifestyle Kurt had were not
unique to him alone. Other people have had similar feelings, including
Billy. He's stated in countless interviews that his songs are primarily
  about his own life.

-"[song x] is about drugs, right?" - see above. It's been overdone.

-"Collective Soul ripped off the Pumpkins!" or similar threads. Music is
music. It's been discussed to death, and the whole topic just plain sucks.

-Moshing. Some like it, some hate it. BC seems to not like it, but doesn't
ban it. In any case, discussing moshing (esp. on the list) seems only to
result in flamewars, so please keep your opinions on this matter,
enlightened as they may be, to yourself. :)

-"'Cleanliness is next to godliness' was on a banner in a Hole video!"
So Billy got that line from Courtney, right? No. That saying is an ancient
proverb, at least as old as "a penny saved is a penny earned" and "a
  stitch in time saves nine"...

-"Was Billy in the TV show Small Wonder??"
NOOO!!! :) It seems like the exact same message keeps popping up every few
months asking that question, and it's rather annoying. So please don't ask
it again, and if it pops up, try (hard as it may be) to ignore it...

2. -Songs-

2.1 Where can I find lyrics?

There are lots of lyrics out there. Lots of sites carry them. If you
don't want to look far, my web site attempts to consolidate all the
existing lyrics in their best (i.e. most accurate) forms.

The URL for my SP site is http://www.cae.wisc.edu/~agnew/sp/
  (plug, plug, plug!) [grin]

2.1a Why is my lyrics file all wrong?

If you have an older copy of the Gish lyrics, there are quite a few
glaring errors, most notable in the first verse of Siva. This is because
there are really no "official" lyrics for Gish and many other songs. Most
of the lyrics appearing online are the result of hard listening, and may
not always be correct. Billy has a tendency to not really pronounce his
  words sometimes... :)

WEB SITE OWNERS: Please, please, please- either update your lyrics as
often as they are corrected, or else link them directly to those on my
site if you must have them. It's really counterproductive to have old,
incorrect lyrics floating around online when better, more correct copies
  are available...

2.1b Well, is there a correct version out there?

Only a few releases have official lyrics, so sometimes the best we can do
is just to listen really closely, and compare what we find out, sometimes
making 10 corrections in the same place before finally figuring it out
(i.e. "Frail and bedazzled from all the glare" remained debated until
someone saw/heard him live at the Double Door concerts.) At any rate, we
try to come up with the best lyrics, but it's not always completely
possible. If you know of any corrections to be made to the lyrics you find
on my site, please email me about it (agnew@cae.wisc.edu). We all want the
right words, but sometimes it's just not all that easy... :)

2.2 Where can I find tablature?

Welp, Nevada's tab archive has been shut down due to some lame copyright
junk (red tape?). There are still plenty of mirror sites, though, and lots
of tab is also available on web sites

The list of tab archive mirrors is:

  ftp://mirrors.aol.com/pub/guitar/
  http://www.guitar.net/olga/
  ftp://ftp.uu.net/doc/music/guitar/
  http://harmony-central.mit.edu/~ftp/mirrors/olga/guitar/

  http://gaston.unice.fr/~paubert/musique/src/src.html
  ftp://ftp.leo.org/pub/rec/music/guitar/songs/olga/
  ftp://ftp.informatik.tu-muenchen.de/pub/rec/music/guitar/songs/olga/
  ftp://ftp.uni-paderborn.de/doc/guitar/
  ftp://ftp.uni-stuttgart.de/pub/misc/guitar/
  ftp://ftp.forthnet.gr/pub/guitar/
  ftp://ftp.ci.ua.pt/pub/music/guitar/other/
  ftp://ftp.ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au/pub/mirror/guitar/

(Note: I haven't checked all of these, some may be incorrect or down)

There is a tab book out for Siamese Dream, and one for MCIS is supposed to
come out soon, but is being delayed due to legal messes & red tape.

As for finding tab on web sites, a lot can be found at the following
  places:

  http://hubcap.clemson.edu:80/~bpmccal/sp_1.html (AnsiGod's site)
  http://www.muohio.edu/~carmance/sp/tab/ (Chris & Shyla's site)
  http://www.cae.wisc.edu/~agnew/sp/music.html (Eric Agnew's site)
  http://www.deakin.edu.au/~benmo/smashing.html (Moogle's site)

Bass tabs can now be found at the new SP Bass Tabs site:

  http://www3.sympatico.ca/n.riopel/spframed.html

2.2a What about piano music?

Yes! There's that, too. Since MCIS, there's now more keyboard-type stuff.
The full score for Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (complete with
synth, clarinet, and cello parts) is available on my web site, and has
finally been rewritten in Db and scanned in very large (1500x1950, 205k).
I've also kept the older copy, which is written in C# (800x1125, 96k). Also
available are Farewell and Goodnight (1550x755, 82k), and the opening line
to Thru the Eyes of Ruby (454x64, 4k).

These can all be found at: http://www.cae.wisc.edu/~agnew/sp/music.html

2.3 Songs SP have covered

SP have covered quite a few songs now... Here's a list:

  Song: Originally By:
  ------------------------------ ----------------

Destination Unknown Missing Person [not yet released]
  Dreamin' Blondie [not yet released]
  Girl Named Sandoz the Animals
  Godzilla Blue Oyster Cult
  Jackie Blue Ozark Mountain Daredevils
  Landslide Stevie Nicks (Fleetwood Mac)
Never Let Me Down (Again) Depeche Mode
Out of Focus [ofttimes Blue Cheer
  mislabelled as "Angel"]
  Sad Peter Pan Vic Chestnutt
Sunshine of Your Love Cream [note: only a tiny bit is done]
Terrapin [also mis-listed as Syd Barrett
  "The Fishes" and as
  "Crystal Blue"]
You're All I've Got Tonight The Cars [not yet released]

They've also covered Depeche Mode's "I Feel You" (a bit of it, at least)
and David Bowie's "Kooks", both featuring James on vocals, as well as
little blurbs of "Stonehenge" by Spinal Tap, and the Doors' "The End", but
they aren't available on any CD bootlegs. They've also been rumored to
have covered the Cure's "Just Like Heaven," but no known recordings have
been made. They've also done a whole lot of very short blurbs from
different songs. One that seems to recur is a verse from "Somewhere Over
the Rainbow" sung in the middle of live Silverfuck performances (after the
"bang bang..." part). There have also been a large number of covers
they've done live, but since they don't show up on any CD boots, I'm not
  going to mention them.

The unreleased covers of the Cars, Blondie, and Missing Person's will
probably appear on the upcoming box set, which should be out in the next
  few months.

2.3a ...even that Depeche Mode one

Yes. Smashing Pumpkins really did cover the Depeche Mode song "Never Let
Me Down Again." The "Again" is left out on the title of the SP releases.

This is one of the questions that drove me nuts enough to write this FAQ,
so PLEASE don't ask it again... :) It's available on the Rocket 7" and
CDS, as well as the bootlegs Astoria '94, London '94, and We Are From
  Another Planet.

The original Depeche Mode version can be found on their album "Music for
  the Masses."

2.4 Where to find a given song

The "Bootlist by Song" is now obsolete. It was rather cumbersome as a
single file, a rearranged conglomeration of Karl Daher's bootlist and
Roger Janssen's discography, arranged by song instead of by medium. Now,
I've split up the BLBS and added each song's entry to that song's
corresponding page. Simply go to a song's page now, and the complete
availability of that song will be listed there (i.e. every album, single,
boot, etc. it appears on). Song pages are found at:

  http://www.cae.wisc.edu/~agnew/sp/songs/

If you're looking for a song and don't know the title, you can search by
lyrics at the UWP Music Archive at:

  http://archive.uwp.edu/pub/music/lyrics

2.4a Siamese Dream- the song.

There is a song called Siamese Dream, that isn't on the album. The only
way to get it, unfortunately, is as the b-side of the Disarm 7". Vinyl
only. Same goes for Purr Snickety, which is on the Cherub Rock 7".

2.5 Who sings [x]? It doesn't sound like Billy...

Billy sings most, but not all songs.

The songs that feature James on lead vocals are:

Believe, Blew Away, The Boy, Country Girl (DD), Farewell & Goodnight (1st
verse, w/ Billy), I Feel You [non-CD], Kooks [ditto], ...Said Sadly (w/
guest Nina Gordon of Veruca Salt), Take Me Down, and Terrapin.

D'Arcy sings on Daydream (Gish) and in the second verse of Farewell and
Goodnight, as well as backup on many other songs. She also sings lead w/
Mark Rew on Catherine's "Four Leaf Clover," from their new album "Hot Saki
and Bedtime Stories," released Sept. 17.

Jimmy sings the second verse w/ D'Arcy on Farewell and Goodnight.

2.6 secret messages/sounds (DOOM, etc.)

Sometimes there are little blurbs that you can make out at the very end or
beginning of a song, and some songs have little sound effects you can find
in the middle, or somewhere else... Some of them aren't really much of a
secret, some are just plain weird, and some require extremely close
listening... The DOOM explosion in the liner notes is listed below, under
  "Where Boys Fear to Tread".

I get -tons- of submissions for this section. I haven't had the time to
listen to every song to check up on it. I'm going to start putting these
in the individual song pages from now on, and perhaps splitting this
section off into a separate sub-FAQ if it gets too big.

  Bodies
during the second "Love is suicide" chorus, there are some words being
mumbled in the background (following list thanks to Mark Gillis):
    destroy / despise / distrust / disobey / destroy / distrust (not
    sure) / ??? / disarm / destroy / despise / dissect / deny / destroy /
    despise / disconnect

  Bury Me
song opens with James saying something of continuous debate (most
popular ideas being "Boys, let's do it" and "poised like an angel")

  Cherry
at the very beginning, Billy says "Listen- wanna just start it?" then
Jimmy says "Ready, Flood?" Flood replies "Yeah." and Billy counts up to
4 before they start in again

  Daydream
at 1:10.5 you can hear a tap/click noise, supposedly from the cellist's
bow hitting the wood. There are also jingly noises, probably from a
    bracelet, most notable around 1:20-21

  Galapogos
from 3:16-27 you can hear muttering in the background

  Glynis
very beginning has some computerized voice saying "Hello," which
allegedly comes from a Red Red Meat song...

  Hello Kitty Kat
    ending, BC mumbles "Song's over"

  Honey Spider I
on some versions, you can barely hear Billy laughing "Aha! That's
everything! Haa..." at the very end

  Hummer
after the song, you can hear "classical music or something"...

  La Dolly Vita
    there's a weird "ooh!" noise at 3:33, and a cuckoo at 3:44

  Marquis in Spades
At the very beginning: Intercom: "Rolling..." JC:"I was just on
another planet for a sec..." BC:"Run it back, Mole." (amp on)
    "...Fucker."

  Obscured
Billy mumbles "yeah" or "oh" or something like that at 0:11

  Pissant
Billy yells "Woo!" at the end...

  Quiet
at the very end, there is a (barely audible) weird sound that resembles
cartoons played warbly-fast & fuzzed out a bit...

  Silverfuck
at very end, BC says "Alright, this take, don't give a fuck" and plays a
    few notes

  Siva (PS version)
at 4:09, D'arcy says "Wait- I just stepped on my [?]" and Billy counts
up to 4 for the loud re-entry

  Soma
at the end, a clip from TV [?] "...And you need to resist the devil, so
    that he will flee"

  Soothe
2:18-21 "You can hear the 7am buses slithering by." (-BC, PI liner notes)

  Spaceboy
There's a rather odd conversation at the end... (See 2.6a next)

  Starla
5:27-5:30 "listen for the police car go by" (-BC, PI liner notes)

  Where Boys Fear to Tread
you can hear the DOOM explosion mentioned in the liner notes at 1:20,
    1:55, 2:29, 3:01, 3:44

2.6a End of Spaceboy blurb

There's an odd conversation at the end of Spaceboy... On some CDs, it
appears at the beginning of Silverfuck, although the SD tab book makes it
clear that it belongs at the end of Spaceboy...

"Now it's, uh, kind of strange, and, uh, kinda hard for me to talk
about, but I thought maybe you could help- um, when we start getting
physical, rather than having intercourse, he ends up just masturbating
himself, and I end up feeling very alienated and unsatisfied, and it's
    really come between us-"

Well, that's a rather candid monologue... [!] This seems to be from some
talk show or something- in the tab book, Billy said it was from an
anonymous source, and that he couldn't say where it was from, for fear of
  being sued.

2.7 What does song [x] mean?? Is "Gish" named after Lillian Gish? Etc.

Well, there's been a lot of discussion about the meanings of various
songs. Unfortunately, there's so much of it that it won't fit nicely into
this FAQ. I've put comments & notes on the individual song pages wherever
possible, and can always add extra comments if interest ensues.

Gish was "not really" named after Lillian Gish, a silent movie actress.
Here's an interview clip from 120 Minutes, 11/91 (DK=Dave Kendall):

DK: OK, well, your debut album is called 'Gish,' and this is named, I
      guess, after -Lillian- Gish, the-
  BC: Not really...
  DK: No, not really? [laughs]
DW: It used to be, but he changed his mind
BC: I never change my mind
DW: Yes, you change your mind...
DK: What story do you have for us now, Billy?
BC: Well, the actual story is- I thought 'Well, I need to make up a name
for this album,' and I sat down, and the first word that came to my
mind was 'Gish' and I wrote it down & closed the book & that was it, I
never- I didn't really think about it that much.

Song meaning discussion is OK, but keep an open mind about it. Another
clip from the same interview says this:

DK: "Rhinoceros" from Smashing Pumpkins. Billy, you told me during that
video that you won't tell me what that's about, so why don't you
explain to us why you don't like explaining your songs.
BC: Um, my songs are really personal... and... you, it's like I'd have to
tell everyone the story that goes behind every song, and I just...
it's kinda- it seems silly to me that I'd have to say "Well one day I
was walking down the street, see, and..." [shrug] it doesn't- it
      wouldn't make any difference. I- and I don't- I mean, that's one of my
problems with the video medium, is- is having to attach symbolism and
specifics to songs because I think in some ways it's the ambiguousness
of things that makes people find something in their own... life.
DW: I sometimes think that... people get more out of a song (BC nods) if
they don't know exactly what it's about- you can, you can listen more
to the music, and that's mostly what we're about is music & emotions
      come from that.
BC: Freedom. Freedom. Freedom of thought. I mean, we're not here to preach
or tell you what to think, you know, if-
DW: We're here to say 'think for yourself,' you know...

What most people do NOT want to hear is that a song is about drugs,
Kurt Cobain, or Courtney Love. Such threads seem to only generate flames,
so it's best to avoid them. Billy has said in countless interviews that his
songs are primarily about his own life.

Also, in case you missed the section above, we've already heard that
Tristessa means sadness in umpteen Romantic languages, that "Soma" was a
drug in Brave New World, as well as many other things, etc. We don't need
  to hear it again. :)

2.8 Where are all the unreleased songs on Vieuphoria?

There are 4 songs on Vieuphoria (and its CD-duplicate Earphoria) that are
unavailable elsewhere. Some people seem to be confused about which song is
which, so hopefully this will clarify things:

Bugg Superstar is the techno song that's playing in the background while
James is talking about his dog (there's no talking on the Earphoria
  version)

Pulseczar is the grindy-guitar song with the weird visual effects that
starts off with "I hear you calling from the sky..."

Sinfony is the short (:53) ebow-driven guitar-only "song" that sounds
rather symphonic, which appears at the beginning of the tape.

Why Am I So Tired? is the really long instrumental at the end while they
  scroll the credits.

The long, awesome, killer jam at the end of Silverfuck also appears as
"Jackboot" as part of the Pastichio Medley.

2.9 Remastered Gish

Gish (their first album, in case you're really new at this [grin]) was
remastered and rereleased ( yeah, yeah, just like "Bleach", but we don't
need to hear that again). To tell the difference, just look at the side
label. If it says Caroline then it's the old, original. If it says Virgin
Records it's the new, remastered version. Same applies for the back. The
CDs are also different- the Caroline CD is purple w/ the same writing as
the front, and also includes the spherical picture (in black/ clear
(silver), while the Virgin CD is simply purple w/ the words, no picture.
Another pressing, on the Hut label, has a red CD.

2.10 1979 remix

Moby did a remix of 1979. There were also 2 other mixes done by Roli
Mosimann. The remix single has been released on 12" and CDS. If you like
techno and SP, you'll probably love this. :)

The tracklist is: Vocal Mix (5:08) / Instrumental Mix (5:18) // Moby Mix
  (6:39) / Cement Mix (4:40)

2.11 Different Covers for Siamese Dream

Some copies of Siamese Dream don't have any of the song names listed on
the back. This was probably due to the title "Silverfuck", and copies
that did not list this on the back were likely created so that big chain
stores like K-Mart, etc. could sell copies of SD without having to put
some weird label on it. These are by no means rare, or worth more. Newer
copies of such CDs (the ones that come with the clear & white seal/sticker
thingy on the top of the CD) say "SIAMESE DREAM- CLEAN VERSION". The only
difference is the back cover of the CD- the songs aren't listed. The CD
  itself is the same.

The inserts are sometimes different, too. On some (older) copies, the
liner has many pages, with a photograph on each page, with the handwritten
lyrics on them. Other copies have a 4-page foldout, with all the
written-on photos crammed onto 2 sides, making it nearly impossible to
read. But have no fear, the official lyrics were typed up and given out,
so they're out there. If you don't already know all the words, they're
  available on my web site:

  http://www.cae.wisc.edu/~agnew/sp/

2.12 Difference between Earphoria promo and bootleg

The promo CD is baby blue with pink SP-hearts, has a picture of James &
Bugg on the back of the inside liner, and has the "Compact disc" logo. The
bootleg versions vary: some have cheap copies of the liner, plain silver
discs w/ black hearts, varied track settings (French Movie Theme combined
on the same track as another song, and Silverfuck split into 2 tracks), no
picture of James, no Virgin logo on the CD, etc.

2.13 Common words (June, now, etc.)

A lot of people have noticed that the word "June", among others, appears
is a large number of songs. When asked about this on the Q101 interview
10/95, Billy explained that it was just one of those things he did to see
if people noticed. Well, we noticed. It's probably futile to try to think
of -why- he uses these same words, but it's probably something as simple
as "it's a word he likes" or "it rhymes well"...

Since so many people -have- noticed, it's probably pointless to bring up
again, as it's been brought up many times before.

3. -Band Info-

3.1 Where did they get their name?

There are several answers they have given to this. Most of them appear
to be jokes, which is what the band name is supposed to be anyway. This is
  from the newsletter, March '93:

  ORIGIN OF NAME:
Gene Simmons came to us in a dream and said: "Joe Strummer is a pumpkin,
  drunken and smashed."

Since then, they have given other various answers, including the one on
TV-Japan, as seen on Vieuphoria, where they say "It's a joke."

D'arcy also had the following comment (from an interview on 11/19/93):

"The name of the band is a stupid name, a dumb bad joke and a bad idea,
OK?" she says. "Billy named the band before there even was a band. He was
like, 'I'm gonna have a band and it's gonna be called this.' 'Smashing'
is not a verb, it's an adjective. It's not like we like to smash pumpkins
or anything. And we are not amused by pumpkin jokes anymore."
(The WA Post, 11/19/93- article courtesy of Chris Carman)

I think this is the closest to a serious answer you'll get. The word
"smashing" is used as an adjective, i.e. how the Brits say "Simply
smashing..." or something like that... They just wanted a totally crazy
  name, that's all... :)

3.2 When did they first appear?

Again, from the Pumpkin Press/Newsletter of 3/93:

Billy and James in a Polish bar called Track, 1988.

3.4a What high schools did they attend?

Billy went to Glenbard North in Chicago, James went to Elk Grove Village
HS, and Jimmy, as mentioned above, went to Joliet
Catholic HS. Where D'arcy went is as yet unknown.

3.5 How do you pronounce James' last name?

Ee-hah, not Eye-ha. Long E sound, a as in father.

3.6 Is it true that Billy did most of the work recording on SD?

Yes. He did most of the guitar tracks, even bass. The reason for this
is said to be efficiency. He could record things in a few takes, whereas
other members may have required 10 to record the same thing. Since studio
time is expensive, they opted to do it in a short time. Here's a quote
  from BC about the same:

"I was obsessed to meet a standard that was beyond our capability. I was
more concerned about technical efficiency than heart."

The MC&IS sessions were reportedly "a joy, compared to the tense
Siamese Dream recording," and all four members worked
  collectively.

3.7 Why do some people think they suck live?

This is an old debate brought up by people who have only heard BC's more
hyper/screamy concerts. The point people try (and fail) to make is that BC
sucks live, because he screams, and "it sounds like shit." Well, some
people -like- how Billy sounds when he screams, it gives it a twist. We
can't expect him to whisper and be heard as he does in the studio. There
have been plenty of shows, even non-acoustic ones, in which his voice is
the same "nice, clean, mellow" voice we all know from the albums. It's
performances like the Disarm at MTV Music Awards that upset some people,
because they can't handle anything that's different than what they expect.
If it sounded exactly the same as the CD, what would be the point of going
to see them, other than the fact that it's likely to be louder?

Another comment from the D'arcy interview:

"Before we record songs, we always like to play all the songs a lot
live, to see how they work," D'Arcy says. "When we recorded 'Siamese
Dream,' we used a Mellotron, string instruments, multiple, multiple
guitar parts... But we always know we can go back and play it live
with whatever we have and it's still a good, solid song."
     (The WA Post, 11/19/93)

3.8 What kind of equipment do they use?

"Electro Harmonix Bigg Muffs, Maestro Phasers and a lot of rack gear!"

A lot. :) Seriously- they have thousands of dollars worth of equipment,
and I couldn't possibly list it all here. Check web site articles, namely
those from Guitar World, etc., which would discuss those things. One such
good article to read on this subject is the intro to the SD tab book,
  which can be found at:
  http://www.cae.wisc.edu/~agnew/sp/articles/sdtbintro.html

3.8a How does Billy do that cool voice effect in the middle of Silverfuck?

Referring to the slow attack on the "Bang, bang, you're
dead" section, it's a trick with echo/reverb effects. The track is
recorded, then flipped backwards, then echo/reverb is added while it's
backwards. Then it's flipped back to forwards, and it appears to echo
into the words... (There's also echo added normally, i.e.
  forward/after)

This trick is also used in the beginning of Starla, and in a lot of songs
  by the Cure...

3.8b What's an EBow?

  An EBow (electric/electronic/electromagnetic/... bow)
is a small, hand-held device that causes the guitar strings to vibrate
continuously, creating much longer sustains, comparable to the bow of a
  violin, etc.

Check out the EBow web site at http://www.ebow.com

3.9 I'm crazy about D'arcy!! Is she with anyone? What about the rest of 'em?

D'arcy is married to Kerry Brown, who is the drummer of Catherine, and
has also done production work with SP. Kerry has also been one of the
members of the hobby/ project band StarChildren for SC's first release,
but the actual band doesn't really have any set members (except BC).

Before SP formed, she was "romantically involved" with James, but this is
  now pretty much ancient history...

As for the rest of them (esp. Billy), they'd like their privacy. There
really is no need to know these things anyway. Billy's marital life
shouldn't be of our concern: "There is not and will not be any public
record on my marriage. That's one thing I have to draw lines around."
  (SPIN 6/96)

3.10 What's up with them & the Sun Times?

A Chicago Sun Times reviewer, Jim DeRogotis, gave SP a few bad reviews,
saying of Hummer, for example, "the lyrics are sophomoric, and the song is
stupid." Billy has made a few comments in concerts (one of which can be
heard on the Drown boot), and even faxed in a poem to Ben Kim, the writer
of another bad review in another local Chicago magazine (NewCity).
(thanks to pissant (hoagland@ucsu.Colorado.EDU) for giving me this one):

i'm glad that i'm such a good rhymer,
better than being a social climber,
just because i'm a bit brighter,
	than some fucking writer.

3.11 Is there a "the" in the band name, or not?

There is a "the" written before "Smashing Pumpkins" on the new album and
singles, as well as on the Rocket Single. "The" is also written on the
inside liner notes in Gish and SD.I assume that's a good indication of
what they are to be called. :) But does it really matter that much? :P"

3.12 Was Billy on the show "Small Wonder"??

There was an odd TV show in the 80s about a robot girl, called
"Small Wonder". Some people seem to think that the boy in the
show, Jamie, looked quite a lot like young Billy. While the resemblance
may be close, it wasn't him. The ages don't match, and if BC had been a
TV actor as a child, we would have surely heard mention of this in some
public media form by now (i.e. in a magazine interview or something)...

3.13 Scratchie Records

SP members have started a new record label, called Scratchie Records. The
August '95 Illinois Entertainer said this (thanks turnip@shout.net):

"New local label Scratchie Records, owned by Pumpkin's D'arcy
Wretzky-Brown and James Iha, Catherine's Kerry Brown and others, had
planned a boffo record release party last month with label signees
Chainsaw Kittens. Unfortunately, Kitten's lead guitarist Trent Bell
fractured his wrist during a softball game back home in Norman, OK just
a few days before the party was to happen. So Scratchie is putting the
gig on hold and hopes to send off their label in rockin' style sometime
    early in September"

  For more info, see http://www.muohio.edu/~carmance/scratchie/

3.14 How do I join the fan club?

The fan club (official, but not some big commerical thing) occasionally
(i.e. sporadically) sends out newsletters from the band, and also has
  SP t-shirts, etc. for ordering.

To join the fan club, send $3 to:
                 s.p.f.c.
              p.o. box 578010
             chicago, il 60657

NOTICE: This is run by one person (Laura Ann). She's very cool, but
slightly busy. They get a LOT of mail. So don't be too surprised if it
takes a while before you receive anything. They generally send out
newsletters whenever the band gets around to making them, which isn't
regularly, but she's working on it.

Letters addressed to band members -are- read by the band themselves
(provided the letters aren't obvious wastes of their time, i.e. "You
fucking rule!" or "Will you have my love-child?"). Don't worry about
it being read. I'd actually think it'd have a better chance than if
they received it at home and wondered how you got their home address...

* Laura Ann has received the OK to start putting out a newsletter every
couple months now. :) Future newsletters may feature some amount of
interactivity in the form of submitted questions.

3.15 How do I write to/contact/email the band?

Send snail mail to the fan club address, listed above and in album liner
notes. Just try not to go overboard, as it's processed by a single person.
If it's important enough (i.e. not just a "I love you guys!" letter
they've seen thousands of), the band will receive it. But keep in mind
that they get a -lot- of mail. Sending short, pointless "You rule!"
letters, sympathy cards, etc. aren't necessarily the best idea, as they're
probably getting hundreds of them already, and it only slows things down.
Picture one person sitting in her apartment with enormous piles of mail.
Then remember that she also has a job and 3 bands of her own. :)

Do not look or ask for their home addresses. And if you know it, do NOT
post it! Have some respect for their privacy, for god's sake...

As for email, you can't. There is no publicly available account for
sending email to the band- the amount of email they'd receive would
require a staff of dozens to keep up with it all. It may be possible that
band members have their own accounts, but keep in mind that these are for
business and private/personal use, and if they get fan letters to it,
they'll probably change accounts very quickly.

4. -Merchandise-

4.1 How much is [rarety x] worth?

The best place to look for that kind of information is on Roger Janssen's
discography. It lists all promos, vinyls, demos, etc. and estimated values
when known. (It is also noted in the discography that the estimates are
often very rough, and could perhaps be better stated as "Don't be
surprised if the price tag says this")

Boot CDs generally go for $20-30.

4.2 Where can I get [rarety x]?

If it's really rare, like the peach vinyl Rocket 7", or the Daughter
flexi-disc, it's going to be very hard, but it's possible. Usually if you
ask if anyone wants to sell it, or wait until someone posts an ad that
they're selling it, it's the easiest way to go, but this may not always
work, and if it's an auction, you may end up paying an outlandish amount
for it (someone paid $250 for the peach Rocket 7" a while back- no joke!).

On the other hand, some not-so-rare rareties, i.e. the red Today 7", are
often found at the same music stores that deal in bootlegs, etc. Which
bring us to the next question:

4.3 Where can I get bootlegs?

That question is a little harder to answer, since it depends where you
live. You can always order from someplace else, and there are even a few
companies online that you can telnet to and order from (cdnow.com and
cdconnection.com, to name 2...). Other than that, it depends on where you
live whether you can find a place that deals in bootlegs or not. A few
people on the newsgroup/mailing list take orders from local places and
send them to people (prepaid, usually) and are usually reputable (you
still may want to ask others first...) There once was a list of bootleg
dealers, but on my copy, the maintainer said he was quitting, and I don't
know if anyone else has taken over its maintenance...

There is a web site devoted exclusively to finding non-standard SP
merchandise (i.e. the stuff that you can't find at just any old music
store). The Pumpkins Patch [Brooke Butler] lists online sites with a
list of their SP merchandise, as well as a list of places offline. :)

  involved with printing...

4.5 What is there?

There's a lot. Just browse around through my web site for a while, noting
the songs, discography, and bootlist sections... You can quickly and
easily see that there is quite a lot out there, but unless you have a few
thousand extra dollars to spend, don't count on getting everything... :)

4.6 Videos/videotapes

There's "23 Minutes", which has the 1st 5 videos on it (Siva, Rhinoceros,
Cherub Rock, Today, and Disarm) and supposedly came as a package deal with
some copies of Siamese Dream, but I've never seen one and don't know of
its availability. If anyone has any info on this (or anything else I don't
know about in here), please let me know.

There's also Vieuphoria, which shows a lot of live clips, and has some
really awesome live versions of really awesome songs... it's a must-see.
It also contains 4 unreleased songs: Bugg Superstar, Pulseczar, Sinfony,
and Why Am I So Tired?. This should be available at most any music store.

The No Alternative video is also widely available from stores, and
includes SP's live performances of Glynis and Today from the No
  Alternative MTV special.

Another video I've seen has the same cover as the Peel Sessions CD, and
had a little sticker on it (from the store) saying that it had no overlap
with the material on Vieuphoria. The title of this is Video Collection.
It has the videos through Today, as well as 2 MTV interviews from
120 minutes, and lots of other stuff...

There are now MTV videos for Siva, Rhinoceros, Cherub Rock, Today, Disarm,
Rocket, Bullet with Butterfly Wings, 1979, Zero, and Tonight, Tonight. A
few web sites have video clips or entire videos available for downloading,
  including David Cho's web site
  (http://www-personal.umich.edu/~dcho/music.html) and the MTV video
  timeline (http://mtv.com/headshop/featarch/Pumpkins/Auxdox/timeline.html)

4.8 Can somebody get [x] for me?

Maybe. If you're looking for an impossible item (i.e. the stolen demos
or the Daughter flexi-disc) then don't bother... At times, though, people
have offered to pick up rareties for people who couldn't get them locally.
If you engage in this type of "business" it's at your own risk. You may
want to ask others on the group if the person you're about to do business
with has a good rep. There -are- people who will rip you off. It's always
  better to get it yourself.

Check Brooke's Pumpkin Path at http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/1742/
to see if there's a good store near you that may have what you're looking
for, or if there's an online store that has it.

Disregard anything with the name "Chris Bevard" associated with it. The
guy took money from about 50 people in spring '95, and to this date, only
Karl Daher (maintainer of Listessa) got his tapes. Everyone else just lost
  their money.

Anyway, if you want to get something, and you absolutely cannot do so
locally, you may try to see if someone can get one, and make arrangements
that way (once you figure out who you're exchanging with, it's best to take
this to email, of course...). For this type of request, it's probably a
good idea to use the subject header "ISO" (In Search Of) or just "Wanted:"
If you can find something locally, do so. You will probably save at least a
few [insert local currency here] on shipping, and a bit of hassle.

If you're willing to pick things up for people, feel free to post about
  it! :)

4.9 Who are the Frogs from Vieuphoria?

The Frogs are a band from Milwaukee that Billy is both a fan of and close
friends with. They have an album out titled "It's only Right and
Natural".... Part of "Homos" is featured on Vieuphoria. The CD is on
Homestead Records, ID HMS169-2. It may be somewhat difficult to locate, so
if you want it, you may have to order it...

The Frogs have also toured with SP, and played second stage at Lolla '94,
with BC even coming out to sing with them for some songs.

The Frogs have also done a serious cover of Pearl Jam's rearviewmirror,
which appears on the b-side of PJ's "Immortality" single.

The Frogs now have a new album out on Matador (ID ole 155-2), called "My
Daughter the Broad" with 22 tracks, including titles "Children Run Away
(The Man With the Candy)", "Which One of You Gave My Daughter the Dope?",
"Where's Jerry Lewis?", and "Who's Sucking on Grandpa's Balls Since
  Grandma Ain't Home Tonight?"

Founding member and drummer of the Frogs, Dennis Flemion, has been chosen
as SP's replacement keyboardist for the remainder of the '96 tour.
Guitarist/singer Jimmy also has a job backstage for the Infinite Sadness
tour, and comes out on stage to play along w/ 1979, complete with green
sequined suit w/ bat wings. :) Billy produced their latest EP "Starjob"
which is due out on in November Scratchie Records.

4.10 Trading boots

Posting a huge list to the newsgroup or mailing list (esp. the list) is
generally considered bad, esp. if done often. PumpkinNet is a web-run
system for trading boots, which helps keep trading traffic off the list:

  http://www.wfire.net/~nightwol/pumpkinnet.html

Also, several people with web sites have their lists up on their sites.
Look around, you'll probably find something. :)

4.11 Starchildren

Starchildren is the name of a side project band consisting of Billy and
any other members of SP and/or Catherine. It's also the name that SP have
performed "secret" concerts under. Starchildren have put out a split 7"
with Catherine, as well as a cover of Joy Division's "Isolation", which
appears on the Joy Division Tribute album.

Rotating members of Starchildren have included James, Jimmy & D'arcy, as
well as Bob English, and Mark Rew, Neil Jendon, Cliff Fox, and Kerry Brown
  of Catherine.

5. -News-

5.1 Double Door concerts

If you didn't hear, the Pumpkins put on 4 shows in late Feb. 1995, at a
small club called the Double Door. Tickets sold for an amazing $5, but it
was a 21-and-over show. They played all new songs, some of which didn't
appear on MC&IS, and a few encores. The few lucky ones that got to go (500
at each show) all loved it, I'm sure. :)

5.1a Recordings of DD

Although security was very tight at the shows (and for good reason- they
obviously didn't want their new material to be recorded before it was
released...), someone did manage to sneak in and get a recording of 2
shows. However, the quality was extremely poor. Fortunately, a new
recording has surfaced of -much- better quality, although it's not as
complete, but the quality difference more than makes up for the lost songs.

5.2 New/upcoming songs

* There are a few song titles that we have that have not yet appeared. Those
marked with a + will be in the upcoming box set "The Aeroplane Flies High"
due out November 26, with the non-cover tunes being B-sides of the 33
single. See 5.6 for more info.

+A Night Like This [The Cure] +The Bells
     +Clones (We're All) Country Girl
         [Alice Cooper]
     +Destionation Unkown +Dreaming [Blondie]
         [Missing Person]
+The Last Song +My Blue Heaven
      Speed Towers of Rabble
     +The Aeroplane Flies High +Transformer
          (Turns Left, Looks Right)
Wishing You Were +You're All I've Got Tonight [Cars]

The 1979 single, has 3 unreleased B-sides: Ugly, Believe, and Cherry.
The import version also has two additional tracks: The Boy, and Set the
Ray to Jerry (which was on the tentative setlist for SD!).

The Zero single (released April 23 US) contains: Zero / God / Mouths of
Babes / Tribute to Johnny / Marquis in Spades / Pennies / Pastichio Medley

The Tonight, Tonight maxi-single contains: Tonight, Tonight / Meladori
Magpie / Rotten Apples / Jupiter's Lament / Medellia of the Grey Skies /
  Blank / Tonite Reprise

The MCIS triple vinyl contains 2 bonus tracks not on the CD: Tonite Reprise
  and Infinite Sadness.

5.3 Didn't some of their stuff get stolen?

Yes. 10 demo CDs were stolen. Originally, we were told that these were
studio-quality demos of new material, and that many surfaced at local
record stores. After that, though, an article appeared in SPIN, saying
that despite the original information, these were actually only "worthless
practice demos containing scratchy bass lines and D'Arcy telling jokes."
Some sources still say that the demos were actually new/unreleased songs,
and were worth something, but we may never know...

5.4 Keyboardist

Last summer, the Chicago Reader ran an ad by the Pumpkins, saying that
they needed a keyboardist for their live tours. 5-minute
tape auditions were to be turned in by 7/14/95.

Then, an article from the 8/18 Entertainment Weekly gave a slightly
  different outlook than anticipated...

"...aspiring Pumpkins needn't wait by the phone. Two months later, a
refrigerator box full of cassettes graces Chicago's Soundworks
studios, and there's not a listening station in sight. 'We've been too
busy to deal with them,' says Iha. 'I don't want to listen to a bunch
of wack keyboard players. It sounds like a nightmare to me.'"

(thanks to Scott Carpenter (scarpent@gas.uug.arizona.edu) for giving me
this info, disappointing though it was...)

Jonathan Melvoin ended up with the job, and appeared with SP on the
American Music Awards, as well as on the MCIS tour until his death on July
12th... See 5.5 for more details.

5.5 Old News

 1995:

SP played a few shows around and in Chicago. The Chicago show, which was
on October 23rd at the Riviera, was broadcast on the radio worldwide.

An MTV Rockumentary aired several times on 10/17, and was supposed to be
replayed on November 14th, but I didn't see it [shrug].

There were two radio interviews in October, one on Q101 (10/8/95) and one
  on 103.5.

SP played Saturday Night Live on November 11th.

The FAQ has grown too big for the mailing list, so it will be posted as
one file on the newsgroup, and as a split file on Listessa.

 1996:

SP is featured in issue 4 of Launch magazine, which comes with a CD-ROM.
SP stuff includes an interview and the BwBW performance from the 10/23
Riviera concert (both complete a/v). Check http://www.2LAUNCH.com/ for
  more info.

The 1979 single is out now, including 3 unreleased tracks entitled Ugly,
Believe and Cherry. The import version also contains two additional
b-sides, The Boy and Set the Ray to Jerry (finally!).

SP played at the American Music Awards at the end of January.

From the JJJ interview in Oz, two BC quotes (thanks to Kim Wisniewski
  (wisniew@cleo.murdoch.edu.au):

Billy also said that this will be the last big tour for some time.
Basically he said he's pissed off with the Smashing Pumpkins concert
being a "soundtrack to a teenage mosh-pit wet dream". (something like
that...) and they don't want to "play slave to the soundtrack that
people jump up and down to." (Billy's actual words).

Another quote from Billy: "It's just come to the point where rock music
has ceased to be what rock music is meant to be."

The Zero video is out, as is the single (April 23rd).

The MCIS triple vinyl is out, with 2 extra tracks: Infinite Sadness and
  Tonite Reprise.

The Tonight, Tonight single has at least 4 different forms. The first is
the maxi-single, which has TT, Meladori Magpie, Rotten Apples, Medellia of
the Grey Skies, Jupiter's Lament, Blank, and Tonite Reprise.

The second form is a 2-part CD, with MM, RA, and MotGS on the first CD,
and JL, Bnk, and TRep on the 2nd.

The third is a Japanese import version, which contains the same 7 tracks
as the European version. Finally, the US version contains the same tracks
as the part 1/2, although it has no second part (but at least the lyrics
  are printed inside [grin]).

SP were on the Simpsons on May 19 in the "Hullapalooza" episode. It will
supposedly air in the UK in September.

The May 11 concert in Dublin, Ireland, was broadcast live online via
IMusic on the WWW. Unfortunately, the pre-show "interview" was
practically worthless. Even worse was what occurred during the concert
itself: a 17-year-old girl, Bernadette O'Brien, was crushed in the
overcrowded mosh pit, suffering severe internal injuries- she died the
next day as a result. The band tried several times to get people to
calm down, and eventually ended the concert early when they realized
how badly people were hurt. Unfortunately, it was too late.
The newspaper reports are available online at the Irish Times web
  site at http://www.irish-times.com

  The limited (10,000) pressing of a 1979 7", b/w BwBW, w/ picture sleeve
has been released and is now available.

Billy & Jimmy were on RockLine on Monday, June 17 at 11:30pm Eastern time.
They took calls & answered questions, including q's from some of us
(raltho's q about playing rare songs in concert, pissant's q about the new
silverfuck) They also announced that they might have a box set of all the
  B-sides out for Christmas... =)

The video for Tonight, Tonight is out and being aired on MTV.

SP's touring keyboardist, Jonathan Melvoin, died Friday morning, July 12,
from a drug overdose. Apparently, he and Jimmy were shooting heroin the
night before, and Jimmy woke up to find Jonathan dead... Jimmy was charged
with misdemeanor heroin possession, the band were taken in for questioning
and were later released. All tour dates through July 27th were postponed.

A few days after this, the band released a statement saying that Jimmy
would no longer be the drummer for SP. Press release available at
  http://www.cae.wisc.edu/~agnew/sp/articles/PR960712.html

Private/closed auditions were held a while later to find a touring
replacement, which ended up being Matt Walker, touring drummer of Filter.
Dennis Flemion, founding member and drummer of the Frogs, was chosen to be
the replacement keyboardist. Press release available at
  http://www.cae.wisc.edu/~agnew/sp/articles/PR960808.html

SP appear on Sweet Relief II, an "all-star collection of top contemporary
musicians performing the songs of Vic Chestnutt." SP performs Sad Peter Pan
with Red Red Meat. Song clips are available at Sony's web site
  (http://www.sony.com/Music/ArtistInfo/SweetRelief/) The release date was
  August 6th.

The Zero EP was released in the UK on August 19th.

5.6 New News

* SP will have songs for the soundtracks of David Lynch's "Lost Highway" and
Ron Howard's "Ransom" - the latter is due out in November.

* The upcoming box set, "The Aeroplane Flies High" will be released on
November 26 in a "custom made 'retro' style 45-rpm carrying case." It'll
contain all 5 MCIS singles and their B-sides (including import-only), as
well as the covers: "You're All I've Got Tonight" [The Cars]; "Destination
Unknown" [Missing Persons]; "Dreaming" [Blondie]; "A Night Like This" [The
Cure]; and "Clones (We're All)" [Alice Cooper]. B-sides of the 33 single
are: Transformer; The Aeroplane Flies High (Turns Left, Looks Right); The
Last Songs; The Bells; My Blue Heaven. The box set will also include a
36-page booklet w/ exclusive photos, liner notes, and a full discography.

* Recent magazines featuring SP include Rolling Stone (interview w/ BC in
Conan cover (9/19)), a page-article in SPIN (Rage cover, Oct. issue), and
interview w/ BC in Details (Oct. issue).

SP won the most MTV Video Music Awards- 7 in all. They didn't win for best
editing or viewer's choice, but did receive the following awards:
Best Alternative Video (1979); Best Direction in a Video, Best Art
Direction in a Video, Best Cinematography in a Video, Best Special Effects
in a Video, Breakthrough Video, and Video of the Year (Tonight, Tonight)

D'Arcy sings lead w/ Mark Rew on "Four Leaf Clover" from Catherine's
new album "Hot Saki and Bedtime Stories", released Sept. 17th. The video is
  also out on MTV.

SP are rumored to be on an upcoming Cheap Trick cover/tribute album.

5.7 What's with all this Cabal/Junta stuff?

A good idea can be assessed from the following post by Josh Sherman:

  -=-=-=-
Here's a brief run down regarding the Cabal:

Membership in the Cabal (which does not exist) is secret. So people who
are not in the Cabal (which does not exist) cannot say whether or not it
exists (which it doesn't) because they can neither show that there are
no members (there are no members) or that any one person is a member (of
the Cabal, which does not exist, and hence has no members). Now, since
the Cabal (which doesn't exist) is a secret organization (it has no
secrets because it doesn't exist), members (there are no members) do not
know the identities of other members (there are no other members).
Hence, even a person who thinks s/he is a member of the Cabal (there is
no cabal) cannot be certain if the Cabal (which doesn't exist) exists or
    not (it doesn't).

    Is this clear?

If not, just remember this simple maxim: Everything you hear about the
    Cabal is false.

Since this is a largely tangential topic, this section has been greatly
reduced in the FAQ. For more information/torture, consult my web site's
  Junta/Cabal info pages at: http://www.cae.wisc.edu/~agnew/sp/Junta.html

5.8 Tour info

All tour information is available on Josh Sherman's web site at:
  http://weber.u.washington.edu/~jsherman/tour.html

The info is also posted periodically to the newsgroup and Listessa. If
anyone knows anything about an upcoming concert, it will be there. If
it's not up there, then noone knows anything about it. :) Check there for
  all info.

6.1b Font installation

Read the font faq. :) Seriously, here's how to install it on a PC. I'm
not sure about Mac, though... (thanks again to Allison for the run-thru)

To install on a PC: download the Lansbury.ttf file to your Windows/
system directory on your hard drive and decode it if necessary
(requires a UUDecode program). next, go to the Fonts program in
Control Panel. hit the Add button on the right side of the box. then
change the directory in the bottom to Windows/system, and scroll down
through the list of fonts until you find Lansbury. Select it and hit
OK. it will now be installed on your computer. Don't worry about
getting a .fot file, it will be created when you install the font.

Note: To use this under WordPerfect, you must install it under
Wordperfect using the wpfi.exe file or calling it from the main
program. It should work fine after that.

Mac instructions are as follows (thanks to Josh Sherman for run-thru)

  -=-=-
Okay here's some truly anal instructions for getting the font known as
ToulouseLautrec to work on you Mac.

I got my copy off of Chris Carman's Smashing Pumpkins Homepage, and
suspect that his copy is compressed/encoded in pretty much the same
    way that every copy is.

To decompress the font you need two programs. First use BinHex, then
Compact Pro. Once you've decompressed the document, you'll have a
folder titled ToulouseLautrec with four items in it.

What you do from here is dependent on what system version you are
using. If you're using System 7 (and who isn't these days) it's as
simple as putting the individual files in your Font file. The Font
file can be found in your System Folder on the Hard Disk. Once this
    is done, you're set.

With System 6 or earlier it's a little bit more complicated. To
install a Font you will need to use the Font DA Mover. It should be
located in your System Folder. Open the Mover, and you'll find two
scroll boxes. It's been awhile since I've used System 6, but basically
all you need to do is find the Font, and transfer it over to the usable
fonts. There should be a "Move" or "Transfer" button that you click to
    activate the font.

With either System it shouldn't be difficult. I figured out both
Systems by simply playing around for a few minutes. In both cases it
took me less than ten minutes, and I never had to pull out a manual or
ask for help. These instructions should get anybody going in at least
the right direction. Play for a few minutes, and if you're still having
problems you can e-mail me at jsherman@u.washington.edu. Good luck.

Since systems and setups vary widely, I cannot offer help or advice on
font installation. If you're having troubles, my best suggestion is to
find someone you know who is more knowledgeable in that area and could
help out on your specific computer.

6.2 GeekUSA Screen Raver

You can download the Geek USA screen raver from the following places:

  PC- ftp.paranoia.com/pub/sandoz
       http://www.cae.wisc.edu/~agnew/sp/IBMRaver.zip

  Mac- ftp.amug.org/info-mac/art/grf/geek-usa.hqx
       http://www.cae.wisc.edu/~agnew/sp/MacRaver.hqx

Note: this is a screen RAVER, not a saver. It plays Geek USA from
the CD-ROM drive, and does little animations & color cycles with
the SP heart, the smashing pumpkins logo (lansbury font), and the
  SD cover girls... :)

6.3 Bootlist/Discography

Fully html-ized, linked, and image-enhanced versions of the bootlist and
discography are available on my web site, as well as text versions
  downloadable from their main indexes:

  http://www.cae.wisc.edu/~agnew/sp/boots/
  http://www.cae.wisc.edu/~agnew/sp/discog/

6.4 Web/ftp sites

My links page contains all known (to me) SP sites up to the time of last
  update: http://www.cae.wisc.edu/~agnew/sp/links.html

There are also several web sites that have done a rather nice job of
listing other web sites w/ more informative descriptions and even rating
  systems. These are:

  http://www.yadunno.com/sp Pastichio Daydreams
  http://home.sol.no/floy/links.htm the Pumpkin Junction
