What is available in a specific geographic area in the way of
Christian radio?

This FAQ, created specifically for rec.music.christian, attempts to
offer an answer to the preceding Frequently Asked Question by listing
Christian radio stations and Christian music radio programs on
otherwise non-Christian radio stations.

1.0	Using the FAQ
======================================================================

The intended purpose of this FAQ is to allow listeners to find
Christian radio no matter where they are or plan on being. This is
accomplished by listing Christian radio stations and Christian music
radio programs on other radio stations.

In previous incarnations of this FAQ, the radio programs and the radio
stations were listed separately. Currently they are all together so
that if one wishes to find out what is in a specific city, one just
has to look up that city in one list. A "NC" appears after the call
sign of a station if it is not a Christian station. Being in the FAQ
means the non-Christian station has a Christian music program which is
listed instead of a station description.

Radio stations are sorted, in their respective sections of the FAQ, by
state, city and frequency with FM frequencies coming before AM. All
stations are assumed to broadcast 24 hours unless otherwise stated.

One particularly handy use of this FAQ is on summer driving trips.
Before you leave, check to see which states you will be traveling
through and verify with the road map to see which stations will likely
be in range along your route. Printing a copy of the relevant parts
of the FAQ is helpful.	If a compressed font is used (use a fixed
pitch so columns line up properly), there will be room to make notes
on the station which can be sent to me to be included in the FAQ.

======================================================================
2.0	Glossary of Terms
======================================================================

AC - Abbreviation for Adult Contemporary.

AM - Amplitude Modulation. A transmission scheme where by the
frequency of the carrier remains constant but the amplitude changes
with the signal it is carrying. There are a few radio bands that use
AM. Among them are short wave, medium wave, long wave and various
two-way communication bands like citizen's band (CB). The medium wave
band has frequencies ranging from 530 to 1610 kHz (thousand cycles).
This band is also called AM since it is the most commonly used and
therefore any other reference to AM in this FAQ shall be referring to
this band. In Region 2 (Western Hemisphere), AM frequencies are in
increments of 10kHz.	In Regions 1 and 3, they are increments of
  9kHz.

Adult Contemporary - Slower and less harsh music. [David Meece, 4HIM,
Phillips Craig & Dean, Susan Ashton]

BCM - Beautiful Christian Music.

Call Sign - A letter and number combination that uniquely identifies
the radio station. In North America, call signs normally are 4
letters. In some cities there are two radio stations with the same
call sign, one on AM and the other on FM. These stations are usually
differentiated by appending "-FM" to the call sign of the FM station.
In the US, translator stations have a call sign comprised of a letter
(either a K or W depending on the side of the Mississippi), a three
digit number between 200 and 300 indicating the FM channel it is
broadcasting at and a further two letters.

CCM - stands for "Contemporary Christian Music". It also stands for
the less commonly used, "Christian Contemporary Music". Generally,
any popular form of music performed by a Christian with Christian
overtones whether subtle or overt in its broadest definition. A
more narrow definition holds it to just the "pop" stuff.

CHR - Abbreviation for Christian Hit Radio or Contemporary Hit Radio.
Harder than AC but not quite rock.

DAB - Digital Audio Broadcast.	The radio band of the future. Research
is currently being done on this alternative to AM and FM with hopes of
bringing it out by the late 1990's. The signal is sent in digital form
over the airwaves following the digital standards set out for digital
audio as encoded on a CD. This will give clear, almost CD quality sound
throughout practically all the listening area. The frequencies from 1452
to 1492 MHz (million cycles) have been reserved for DAB by the World
Administrative Radio Conference (WARC), which negotiates frequency
  allocations globally.

FM - Frequency Modulation. A transmission scheme where the amplitude
of the carrier remains constant but its frequency is varied with the
signal it is carrying. Among the radio bands which carry this scheme
are VHF marine, air traffic control, weather radio and the audio
channel for television broadcasts. The most common FM radio band is
only known by the name FM. Frequencies on this band range from 87.9
to 107.9 MHz (million cycles). In North America, these frequencies
have a single digit decimal place which is always an odd number. (eg
  93.1 93.3 93.5)

Frequency - The numerical value of the location where a station is
tuned in on your radio. AM and FM are not noted in this FAQ, but the
numbers between 87-108 are FM, and 530-1610 are AM.

MOR - Middle of the Road. This is stuff like Twila Paris, Amy Grant,
MW Smith, Michael Card, NewsBoys - top 40 now or in the past, that
  sort of thing.

Talk - Means anything from local talk shows to nationally syndicated
ministry shows (ie. not music). The ministry/talk shows could
include: Focus on the Family (Dobson), Bob Larsen, Chuck Swindoll,
Insight For Living, How to Manage Your Money, Concepts for Living,
Diamonds for Dusty Roads, Adventures in Odyssey, Living Way, etc. Also
called: Teach & Preach, speaking ministries.

Translator - A specific re-broadcasting device that receives the
mother station off-air, converts it to another frequency without
de-modulating it to audio first, amplifies the signal, and then emits
  it through an antenna.

======================================================================
4.0	Submitting information updates
======================================================================

Any help you can give on the informational content of the FAQ is
encouraged and appreciated.

In previous versions of this FAQ, there was a rather rigidly specified
submission format. Due to a change in the internal mechanisms of how
the FAQ is maintained, this rigidity is no longer necessary. I'm just
looking for certain pieces of information which can be formatted any
way you wish.

For Christian radio stations, I am looking for the following
information, call sign, and a brief description of the station.
Generally a description will have an approximate breakdown of the
percent of time allocated to talk vs music. Additionally, a
description of the musical formats is handy. If the station has a
home page on the WWW, the URL will help.

For a Christian music program, I am looking for the call sign o fthe
station it is on, the name of the program, the time it starts and ends
and the musical format of the show.

for the stations, I do not require the frequency or location of the
station as I can get if from the FCC Engineering databases. However,
if you include such information, it will allow me to verify the
correctness of the FCC data (mistakes have been found).

To send me the info just e-mail it with the following mail headers:
	To: af883@freenet.carleton.ca
	Subject: CCM RADIO FAQ SUBMISSION

I ask that you use that subject header because I receive a fair amount
of e-mail and it helps me process it quicker

Thanks to all who have submitted to the FAQ over the years. You are
too many to list here but your info is most helpful to all of us who
make use of the FAQ.
