Posting-Frequency: monthly
Last-modified: 1996/08/20

Changes since last posting - Entire FAQ split into 4 posts rather than 1
"www" section: added AMC "ex-Lily" page; added
				another DOOL page; some corrections;
				added CITY discussion page
			     "lists" section:
				added SAV
				deleted AMC non-ratsa list

This FAQ is formatted as a digest.
Most news readers can skip from one question
to the next by pressing control-G.

Following is a list of helpful hints and posting information. All
new readers of rec.arts.tv.soaps.* are encouraged to read the
FAQs, which are posted monthly. They are also available through
anonymous ftp from rtfm.mit.edu under
/pub/usenet/news.answers/tv/soaps/faq/part2,
or send email to mail-server@rtfm.mit.edu with
"send usenet/news.answers/tv/soaps/faq/part2" (no quotes!)
in the body of the message. Send comments, corrections, additions to
me, questions to the newsgroup (I don't know everything and can't
answer everything). THANKS.

The following sections are covered in Part 2 (of 4):

Part II: Other soap resources on the internet
11. Soap mailing lists
12. WWW (World Wide Web) pages pertaining to soaps
13. Is there an ftp archive for rec.arts.tv.soaps.* from which I can
    retrieve past posts?

Part II: Other soap resources on the internet

Subject: 11. Soap mailing lists

Is there a mailing list for my soap?

Some kind folks in r.a.t.s.* keep mailing lists for people with flakey
or non-existent newsfeeds. Many of these mailing lists do *not* have
anything in them which is not *also* on r.a.t.s.*, so if you have no
trouble getting r.a.t.s.* posts, _please_ don't overburden the volunteer
mailing-list keepers. Also be aware that some of these mailing lists
are very high-volume, so if you have little disk space, they could
easily overwhelm you. Many of the lists are _not_ run automatically,
(ie "subscribe DOOL" might not mean anything to the DOOL-spoiler
list-maintainer), so be careful how you request to be put on a list.

Here are the mailing lists I know about, what they include, and who
to contact to get on the lists:

for AMC: AMC updates posted in r.a.t.s.abc; Mary Allison Wu
<mary@mcs.com>; Send mail to Mary stating to send updates to

For people who don't have the luxury of a graphical WWW browser such as
Netscape or Mosaic or Netcruiser and who don't have Lynx at their site,
there is a way to access the WWW through telnet.

1. At the UNIX command prompt, type "telnet info.funet.fi" (or
	"telnet sunsite.unc.edu") and press Enter.
2. At the Select Service prompt, type "www" (or "lynx" if you're
telnetting to sunsite) and press Enter.
3. At the Select World Wide Web Interface prompt, type "lynx" and press Enter.
4. At the Terminal Type prompt, type "vt100" and press Enter.
5. When the Lynx main screen appears, press "G" (for Go).
6. At the URL To Open prompt, type the URL of the page you want to access,
then press Enter.

When the page appears, you can use the up and down arrow keys to highlight
different links. Use the right arrow key to follow a link and the left arrow
key to go back.

If you have an IBM-compatible PC, May a.k.a. Ms. Purple can get you a
free copy of NetCruiser software (a WWW browser). Email her
(may@cup.hp.com) for details.

If you've read all of the above, and still have questions regarding
WWW itself - what it means, how to access it, and what is a URL
anyway??? - you can get more info by reading a FAQ specifically about
WWW. One which I think looks valuable (and gives references to other
WWW FAQs as well) can be gotten by sending email to
mail-server@rtfm.mit.edu with "send /pub/usenet/news.answers/www/guide"
(no quotes!) in the body of the message.

Thanks to Jeff Jungblut (jeff@port-charles.com) and May a.k.a. Ms. Purple!!
(may@cup.hp.com).

Subject: 13. Is there an ftp archive for rec.arts.tv.soaps.* from which
             I can retrieve past posts?

Most news sites expire articles after a week or two, and some even
more quickly. The only two posts which I *know* are archived via
ftp are the soaps-faq and the soaps-abbrevs, as mentioned in the soaps-faq.

However, there's now (1995) a www site http://dejanews.com, which is
an archive for all Usenet posts except for those posted to alt.*,
talk.*, soc.*, and *.binary groups. The posts are archived for at
most one year. Users have the option of creating a query filter
(which will allow one to search by newsgroup name), or simply by
keyword (ex: if you'd lost a post of your own, you might set the
search to look for your real or email name; however, if you use
more than one word in a search, the default operator is "OR" - to
search for "joe jones", you'd want to search for "joe & jones".).

There's another www site http://www.altavista.digital.com/, which is
similar to Deja News. Using the Alta Vista engine, you can search
either usenet or the WWW, and it has a finer screen for subjects than
Deja News. (It doesn't look at the alt. or talk. usenet newsgroups
either.) Try using Advanced Query, and do read the Help sections.

Also, since January 1992, the entire Usenet newsfeed has been made
available on CD-ROM, so you may be able to find what you want that way.
You can get more information on "NetNews on CD's" from CD Publishing
Corporation, 4824 Fraser Street, Vancouver, BC, Canada V5V 4H4,
phone numbers: 604-874-1430, 800-333-7565 (USA), 604-874-1431 (FAX),
or email: info@CDPublishing.com. In the near future, their product
information will also be available via Gopher at
gopher.CDPublishing.com(TCP/70). I contacted them in October of 1993,
and they said that for those who would like just a rec.arts.tv.soaps
archive CD, they could make custom one-off for them.

DISCLAIMER: I have no association with CD Publishing Corporation, and
don't even have a CD-ROM player.
