========Advise for People wanting to be Points using Terminate *4* =========

Written and compiled by:
			Andrew Roads (2:440/7.51)

This NEW version of my Point Advise file now contains Dennis Janssen's
FAQ and a few editions and extra information, but still concentrates on the
POINTING aspect of Terminate and Termail. It has also been checked more, for
mistakes etc...although It's probably still not perfect!;-)

The point of "Pointing"!:

Pointing is like BlueWave and QWK etc. Except you don't have to LOG
ONTO the BBS, it's automatic and fast, this SHOULD lower phone bills and time the
On-Line. Another good point is that of a Fidonet address, once you are
pointing, you have access to NETMAIL, this is fast and reasonably
direct, you get a Fidonet address which looks like:

				2:440/7.*

Where the * is is your personal point number, given out by the sysop.
This allows you to Receive and Send personal mail, and send it
throughout the Fidonet system, this is reasonably secure and is EASY.

Pointing and the Internet:

Some BBBs' also offer Internet NETMAIL to their points and this allows you
to send and receive mail from the Internet easily, without logging onto the
actual BBS/Internet.

This is usually done by sending mail to your Sysop's System where it is
then send onto the Internet. This is also done with Usenet areas.

For the section you require, do a search in you editor for:

				**NUMBER**

Where NUMBER is replace with the section number.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

**************************************1**************************************

Things that you need:

In this information I'll be using the following software, this is the
basic need for any point:

a) Terminate Version 4.00, available from most BBS's

b) Pkzip, available from most BBS's

c) A text editor, this can be the DOS 5.* or 6.* or any other you want to
   use.

Optional Software:

* Spell Checker (most use Share Spell, usually downloaded as SS*.zip)

* TMnice (adds Taglines and other things to messages in Termail, and is
  written specifically for Termail)

**************************************2**************************************

Getting a Point:

Getting a point number is easy and should be FREE, just ask your local
FIDONET sysop if you can become a point, he'll then allocate the number
and give you information on passwords and other useful information.

Most Sysop's are helpful and encourage pointing, if they are rude, or
never answer mail, just don't use that BBS, it's your choice.

The next step is to download and install the software. All the
software is shareware and should be registered after a while.
The installation of most of the software is automatic and simple, if
it's not it should be explained in the next section.

**************************************3**************************************

Installing software:

PKZIP:

1) After downloading create a directory in your root path called
"PKZIP", then do CD\PKZIP and copy the downloaded file into that directory.

2) The archive should be an EXE file, so just type in the name and it
should self-extract.

3) Edit your Autoexec.bat file and find the PATH line, alter the line
to read "c:\PKZIP" on the end.

4) Re-Boot your computer and type "PKZIP" from any directory, because
it's in your path the PKZIP help file should load up, if it doesn't
check all the previous instructions and you PATH line and try again.

**************************************4**************************************

TERMINATE VER. 4.00:

Although this point file talks about Terminate Version 4.00, it can be
used in general for help with all the other versions of Terminate, and
probably future releases.

1) After downloading create a directory in your root path called
"TERTEMP", then do CD\TERTEMP and copy the downloaded file into that
directory.

2) If you have installed PKZIP okay the next part should work, type in
"PKUNZIP *". If the next step doesn't happen, go back and double check.

3) The files contained in the downloaded file should now extract and
explode, ready for use.

4) Type in "INSTALL" and follow the instructions, choose to install it
to c:\term4. And choose the FULL INSTALLATION.

5) Once the installation process has worked you should be able to load
the file Tm.bat in the C:\term4 directory. So go to C:\term4 by typing
"cd\term4"and load the file by typing "tm".

6) The second part of installation should follow . . . Read and
complete all of the installation questions it asks you and fill in your
point address when asked.

7) The program should now load, if not check and repeat from "1".

8) You can now go into the complicated setup of TERMAIL, once you get
the hang of it , it is easy! While in the "Terminal" window type ALT-F7,
this will load up the point menu system, you must, before you do
anything else set up your BOSS (sysop's system).

8a) While in the Point menu system type "O" and press Return, this will
load up the configuration for pointing.

8b) Go to the "setup Boss" option and press enter.

8c) Edit the Boss and add in things like packet passwords and the
telephone number.

8d) Your Boss should now be set up, make sure you add a comment so that
you know which Boss your calling etc.

8e) Go back to the Point menu.

Now type L and enter to load TERMAIL.

9) Once Termail is loaded follow these instructions:

************************************ADVISE**********************************

The best thing to do with configuration files is to READ every line!
In Termail type ALT-E, this will bring up the main editing system, from
here you can edit all the main control files for TERMAIL. But I doubt
that editing them this way will work, because it doesn't know what
editor to use yet! So you need to do this in DOS, while in TERMAIL
type ALT-J, this will jump you into DOS. Make sure that you're in the
TERMAIL directory and edit the file called TM.CFG. This is the main
configuration file and is the one which will cause you problems!

Read through it line by line editing all the things that you want,
above all the options is a description of what they do, you just change
the lines to your preference!

-------------
TERMAIL SETUP
-------------

AREAFIXING:

Areafixing is a way of fixing into echomail areas of your choice, they are
the mail areas where messages are sent from person to person on certain
topics.

1) Reboot your computer and re-load TERMINATE "cd\term4" "tm".

2) Go back into TERMAIL "ALT-F7" "L" "Return".

3) Follow the following instructions on how to get a GOOD file list:

It would probably be a good idea to get TERMAIL to areafix a list of
available areas from your sysop. This way you have all the possible
areas you can get. Some echos may be local to your BBS and so not be
listed in the main echo list (only back boned areas are listed!).

Here's how you do it:

1) Open areafix menu (3.00, 4.00 = Alt-F)

2) move cursor to "LIST OF ALL AVAILABLE AREAS" and press enter.

3) move cursor to "make areafix in netmail area" and press enter.

4) exit TERMAIL and call your BOSS. If it doesn't call your bosses
number check the configuration (Section 8 of Terminate 4.00 Setup).

Terminate should now send your request for a list to you boss, which
will now prepare it. NB once terminate has hung up wait for a few
minutes for your Boss to prepare the list.

5) Call boss again.

You should receive a netmail of the list in more than one part.

6) load Termail.

7) go into your netmail area.

8) find the lists and go to the first one.

9) export them into file named : ECHO.TX1, ECHO.TX2 etc. until all are
exported.

NB: EXPORTING

In Termail you can export messages to files, printer etc. To do
this, goo] the message in question and type W , choose NO PAGE BREAKS, and
then EXPORT TO FILE. Click on that and type in the file name you want,
Termail will put it into a sub-directory of Termail called export (unless
otherwise told to). Just call the files ECHO.TX1, ECHO.TX2 etc. until you
have all the pages exported.

10) jump to DOS

11) find the echo files and copy them into your TERMAIL directory.

12) edit number 2 (ECHO.TX2) and cut it into memory.

13) load up number 1 (ECHO.TX1) and paste ECHO.TX2 onto the end of it.

14) add all the others onto ECHO.TX1 and then save as TM.lst.

NB Make sure you take out the "+" marks from the file, these mark which
echo's you are currently connected to.

*************************************6***************************************

NOW YOU ARE READY TO FIX YOUR ECHO AREAS.

1) From Termail type ALT-F, this loads up the area fixing menu.

2) Make sure you use the correct area file (TM.Lst) by changing the
Echo list file currently selected.

3) Then Join/Disconnect from areas. Choose the areas that you want to
connect to by moving the cursor to the area and pressing the space bar,
the + sign means that you want to select that area, one more press of
space chooses the - sign which means you want to disconnect from that
area, and one more press leaves it blank and nothing happens.

4) Once all the ones you want are selected press ESC to go back to the
AREAFIX menu.

5) Choose to get all the new mail and to list currently connected area,
then "MAKE AN AREAFIX IN NETMAIL AREA", this should make an areafix in
your netmail are, addressed to your sysop/AREAFIX and with your Areafix
password as the subject.

6) Exit TERMAIL and call your BOSS.

7) Once called wait a few minutes and call back, this time there should
be a couple of NETMAILS and possibly some new echo messages.

8) Load up TERMAIL and when/if asked create the new areas under the
"NEW" heading , you can now reply and read messages in all of the
echos, and send netmail!!

*************************************7***************************************

FIXES:

What are they?:

The fixes do what they say, they fix the few bugs that got thorough beta and
other testing and into the main program, these bugs do things like:

				Change Terminal Settings
				Crash after Upload

I've only ever had the first happen to me, and I'm not sure if the second
actually exists. The first changes the Terminal settings in the phone
directory every time to exit Terminate, this is annoying and there is a fix.

Where Can I get the Fix?:

The fix should be available from registration sites as FIX300.zip or
FIX300.exe, there are quite a few copies going around and it is not
advised to use those from anywhere except reputable BBS's.

Any other information on fixes does come up from time to time in the
TERMINAT_UK and TERMINATE echo's.

Most bugs were fixed in Version 4, but there will probably some bugs in
version 4 that will need fixes.

Dennis Janssen's FAQ:

Thanks to Dennis Janssen, I can now bring you his TERMAIL FAQ within my
file. Although it may re-cover some points made by me, it also
contains a lot of excellent general HELP information (In Answer -
Question Format).

                               Termail FAQ v3.0
                              -================-

Q : What is a point ?
A : A point is a person (above all :-) ) who has got some experience
with FIDO-net and now wants to spend less money on his hobby. He got
some software (like Terminate & TerMail) and arranged with a sysop
(node) to become his 'boss'. The point can now login very fast on
the BBS and get his mail. This is done completely automatically, and
thus very fast, and thus very cheap. All his mail is already packed
saving even more money. You don't have to be a whizzkid to become a
point, but a little experience using computers and FIDO-net will
prove to be helpful. Look out for POINTADV.ZIP for more info about
    points.

Q : Can I also freq using TerMail?
A : No, you can't actually freq using TerMail. You _can_ however, create
the file the point-system needs to perform a freq at all. When you
read a message and you see a filename you would like to have just
press 'F'. There you can select the files you want and the system you
want to freq it from. After you've selected this, and selected the
system you want to get it from, you will have to make the actual
        call using Terminate's point-system.

Q : How about file attaching?
A : When you want to send a file to someone you can attach it to a
message. You can do this with TerMail. Press 'E' to send a netmail
message. Fill out the name and FIDO-address of the person you want
to send the file to. Press F10 to select the file you want
to send. Then you can write your message as you always do. If you
want to be sure the file gets to the person, you have to crash the
file to his system (or his boss's if he's a point). Some
(most) systems in FIDO-Net don't like transporting files for someone
else because it will cost them too much.

Q : I love Terminate but I'm also addicted to BlueWave, do you know of
    any medicine?
A : When you are a point in FIDO-net (or similar nets) you receive your
mail in a different packet format than when you use the BlueWave
maildoor. To convert the FIDO-style packets to BlueWave-style
packets you'll need a program called OMX. You could find it on
    several BBS's just look for OMX100.* (DOS-version) or OMX100-2.*
(OS/2-version). There are also a few scripts released that make it
even easier to use BlueWave with Terminate/TerMail. See if you can
find them on your local regsite.
Don't delete TerMail from you HD, just continue to play with it
until you feel you got the hang of it. I'm sure that in the long run
you _will_ like TerMail better than BlueWave :-)

Q : What is TmNice ?
A : One of TerMail's most annoying bugs (it isn't really a bug
just something that could be handled much better :-) ) is that TerMail
doesn't format the replies too well. TmNice reformats the lines
nicely, it also adds tagline, signatures and random greetings. You
should be able to get the latest version v4.2 at all the regsites
and at HTTP://WWW.BEACHWOOD.COM (TMNICE42.ZIP). Joop Blokker, the
author of TmNice is allways happy to help you. So if you have
problems, even after you've read the included manual, send him a
    netmail at 2:282/610.2 or JBLOKKER@EURONET.NL.
BTW There are other programs that will reformat the quotes, QFixer
from Shannon McCracken for example. And if you're using EzQuote as
your msgeditor you wouldn't need a reformatter at all.

Q : What's the difference between TagLines, Tearlines, and Origins ?
A : Every message MUST contain an origin line, this line will look
    something like " * Origin : Lots of text (2:285/750.24)." A FidoNet
Origin line must be no longer than 79 char's, including the space in
col 1 and the ) following the FidoNet address. The only mandatory
elements are the beginning and ending, as in: _*_Origin:_ (Zone
addr) Where '_' are required spaces, and Zone addr is the
Zn:Net/Node address as listed in the FidoNet Nodelist, and must be
enclosed in (). Everything between these two elements is optional.
Tearlines are created by most programs (like TerMail) to make some
sort of advertisement for themselves. These lines always start with
"---". Most of the time one can not change them.
And then taglines. Taglines (or cookies) are little funny one-line
texts. They start with "..." or ".!.". They have no special meaning,
they are only put there to amuse you. Most/some moderators don't
like the use of taglines since they have no special purpose but will
cause an increase in the phone bill of a LOT of people, so be
careful with them. TerMail only creates an origin and a tearline for
you. If you want taglines, you will have to find an external program
to do it for you. There are a lot of these programs.

Q : How can I get a origin line in a netmail msg?
A : You don't, origins don't belong in netmail...

Q : What editors can I use ?
A : In order to write/reply to messages using TerMail you need a text
editor. Any program that can edit ASCII-files will do. Some of the
most popular are (in _alphabetical_ order): Aurora v2.1a, Boxer
    v7.0a, EDIT.COM (this comes with MS-DOS or Windows95), EZquote v4.0
and Qedit 4.0 (or TSE/jr, which is the same) If you find another,
and it works for you: keep it! it really doesn't matter which you
use. (The versions number I mention are what I -think- are the
    latest.)

Q : What's the point of the bookmark in TerMail?
A : It's just like the normal marker, the difference is that you can place
only one bookmark in an area. You do this with <TAB>. To quickly
find the bookmark press <SHIFT-TAB>. TerMail also places bookmarks
automatically at the point where you stopped reading the area. Only
if you didn't place a bookmark yourself in that area of course.

Q : Every time I startup TerMail or Terminate it compiles the nodelist,
even if nothing has changed. How do I stop that happening?
A : You will have to double, no triple check you setup the paths and
filenames right in either TM.CFG or in Terminate itself.
Use wildcards for the extension. The DIFF-files you receive have to
`land' in your inbound (IN\) directory to ensure automagic
    processing.

Q : What is uuENcoding ?
A : uuENcoding is a way of transforming binary files (like programs or
compiled and ZIP-ed scripts) to 'text' files. You can't make any
sense from those text files, but you can now transport them via
FIDO-net. You can uuENcode a file using T-CODE.EXE. It's in the
TERMAIL\ directory. But be careful, you should really ask the
moderators for permission before you post anything uuENcoded, and
uuENcoded netmail probably gets bounced (returned to sender).

Q : What is uuDEcoding ?
A : If you understood the above you might have wondered how you can
get the original binary file back. Well, you guessed it, that's
where uuDEcoding comes in handy. You can do this too with
T-CODE.EXE, or from within TerMail, just press 'H' to decode it,
the decoded file will be in the EXPORT\ directory.

Q : What does the *at or *bt after some peoples tearline mean?
A : Only very special people have them. These heros have survived the
beta-test phase (*bt) and some even the alfa-test phase (*at). You
should always be very polite and helpful to these people. Remember
they have suffered for you, to bring a completely bugfree product.
(Well, at least they tried ;-) )

% External editor
% ---------------
%
% -N is a Qedit command to jump to a specific line. When editing a
% message, TerMail will replace the @LINE with the correct number in the
% letter.
% @FILE will insert the filename at that position on the command line.
% If TerMail determines that line 4 should be used to start in, then
% the command line would be 'Q.EXE C:\TERMINAT\TERMAIL\NETMAIL\1.MSG -N4'
%
% REMEMBER TO REMOVE THE LINECOMMAND IF YOUR EDITOR DOES NOT SUPPORT IT
%

Editor C:\term4\termail\mve @FILE
% LineCommand

***Put in the editor you want to use when writing a message, use one
with word wrap, this feature is EXTREAMLY usefull!!***

The Rest of the file deals with Echo areas etc., these are all
described well in the file.

Other Configuration files include:
					TM.BBS
TM.BBS:

This file deals with your echos, and how they are controlled. Use it
to customise the way your echos are layed out in Termail (ie, Favorite
at top etc). It also controls whether the file is scanned for written
mail etc, all this is described in the file.

Other Files in the Termail Directory are:

TM.ADR ...... Your personal address book - edit it from termail.

TM.LOG ...... The log file for Termail - control size in TM.CFG.

********************
LAST MINUTE EXTRAS!!
********************

There a few last minute, extra points of information that I felt
important to include:

SAVE AREA, and YOUWROTE AREAS:

These are extreamly useful, they help you to record all the messages
and to make sure you don't miss out on any messages that have been sent
to you. Here's what they do:

NETMAILSAVE: This saves all incoming NETMAIL, and when you exit
TERMAIL, and have received new NETMAIL, it asks if
you want it saved in this area.

YOUWROTE: This saves all the mail that you write, weather in Echo,
or netmail areas... EXTREAMLY useful to check who you
argued with, and what you said! :)

SAVEAREA: This saves all the mail that is addressed to you in the
ECHO areas, it makes sure you don't miss mail when it come IN.

*********
TOP TIP!:
*********

When loading Termail, if to read just downloaded mail, press return
while it is scanning areas (as soon as the screen comes up), and stop
it from scanning the areas, then when the echos come up on screen, you
can see which have new mail.

I hope that the information helps and that you enjoy pointing, if you
have ANY more questions, just netmail me.
