INTRODUCTION
Ease of use is essential to trouble-free backup. So naturally, the
most trouble-free backup is one that is performed automatically --
without requiring operator supervision. FileSafe software can operate
in a fully automatic mode. In fact, we've included utilities that will
help you run any DOS-compatible, command-line driven program automatically
without the need for an operator. And AUTORUN is compatible with DOS 5.0.

This booklet is intended to accompany the latest release of Mountain's
AUTORUN utility. In it, you'll find information on installing and
loading AUTORUN, and strategies for automating a variety of routine
operations on your computer or network. AUTORUN is not limited to
tape backup operations; you can create AUTORUN appointments that run
any compatible program.

SUPPORTED ENVIRONMENTS
Use this version of AUTORUN with the following operating systems:

     > DOS Version 3.1 or higher (including DOS 5.0)
     > NetWare 286 Version 2.15 and 2.2.
     > NetWare 386 Version 3.x.
This version is compatible with all versions of FileSafe software.

RELATED PUBLICATIONS
We've created this booklet to accompany the FileSafe Tape Software
User's Guide that you received with your copy of FileSafe software.
This booklet replaces the chapter on automatic operations in that
manual. Please use this booklet instead of that chapter.

The following publications are recommended for additional reference:

     1. The reference guide for the operating system (OS) version
        used by your computer.

     2. The Installation and Operations manual that came with your
        Mountain tape drive.

HOW AUTOMATIC OPERATIONS WORK
FileSafe software carries out it's automatic operations by means of
a memory-resident program that executes backups and other automatic
operations at prearranged times. This program is called AUTORUN.

You set up AUTORUN to do this by creating appointments. AUTORUN executes
appointments according to the date and time on your computer. Appointments
can be executed when the computer is idle (showing a system prompt).

In addition, you can have AUTORUN "break in" on programs that are
already running to perform its scheduled operations. You specify this
preference by using the /P (pre-empt) parameter in the AUTORUN command.

Note: AUTORUN is not compatible with graphics mode. Even if you
use the /P parameter to pre-empt other programs, AUTORUN will
fail to execute appointments if the program it tries to pre-empt
is running in graphics mode. Autorun is not compatible with DOS 5.0's
     DOSSHELL graphical interface.

There are two ways of accessing AUTORUN. (Both methods are explained
in this document.) You can set up automatic tape operations through
the FileSafe Automatic Backup screen. Or you can use AUTORUN's programming
utility, AUTOSET. When you use AUTOSET, it's possible to automate
other programs; you aren't limited to tape operations.

AUTORUN leaves a "trail" that's easy to follow. You'll be able to
check on the results of your appointments by viewing the file called
AUTORUN.LOG, which is updated after every operation. (More on this
logging process later in this document.)

OPERATING ENVIRONMENT
For best results, we recommend that your system be at the system prompt
or the command line when the appointed time for an automatic operation
arrives. However, AUTORUN can pre-empt another program if the following
conditions are satisfied:

     > The /P parameter must have been included in the command
       that activated AUTORUN.
     > The program currently running must not be in graphics mode.
     > The program you're running must not be making DOS calls
or accessing the hard disk or network drive at the instant AUTORUN
       attempts to start a task.
     > In some cases, AUTORUN may need to "swap" program(s) from
memory to disk. Thus the success of an operation may sometimes depend
on there being sufficient disk capacity for this process.

If any of the above conditions is not satisfied, AUTORUN will wait
(until midnight) for conditions to change. If there is not enough
memory for AUTORUN to perform its pre-emption function, you'll see
a message on screen like the following:

                          AUTORUN Appt. will not run
                          until you exit the current
                           program. (Esc to clear.)

Important: AUTORUN cannot pre-empt programs that run in graphics
mode. This means that screen savers, "front-end" interfaces (shells),
and other graphical programs will not be pre-empted.

Hint: AUTORUN is compatible with major memory management software
products, and can be loaded into high memory to free conventional
     memory for other uses!

INSTALLATION
To install, simply copy the entire contents of the AUTORUN diskette
into the directory MTN_TAPE, where your FileSafe software already
resides.

Hint: If you have to leave your system running AUTORUN for a
long time (for example, overnight), we recommend that you exit other
programs and go to the system command line or prompt. This ensures
that the maximum free RAM is made available for AUTORUN's appointments.

Note: AUTORUN is a Terminate and Stay Resident (TSR) program. As such,
it can encounter conflicts with other active TSRs. If AUTORUN fails
to execute properly, try loading AUTORUN as the only TSR on your system
to test for such conflicts. If a conflict is discovered, you may be
able to work around it by altering the loading sequence of the TSRs
     in your system.

Remember: For up-to-date information, be sure to view the README files
     that accompany this software.

AUTOMATIC BACKUP
The simplest method of programming AUTORUN to carry out a backup is
to use the Automatic Backup screen. The automatic backup can be either
an Unrestricted Selective or a Modified Files backup.

Note: The appointments you set up with AUTOSET can continue to
run, independent of whether or not you use the Automatic Backup screen
to create automatic backups. To learn more, see the section on "Creating
     Appointments," later in this document.

     1. Start by typing
        TAPE
and pressing the Enter key, as usual. If the correct date and time
do not appear in the "Confirm date and time" prompt, correct them
now. Press Enter to to go to the main menu.

     2. Choose "Backup" from the Main menu, and choose "Automatic"
from the Backup menu to display the Automatic backup screen.

The Automatic Backup screen consists of data fields for setting up
Unrestricted Selective and Modified Files backups, a status line at
the bottom of the screen that explains how to make selections, and a
list of function keys you can use to get help, move around the
screen, and clear an appointment. Refer to the Automatic backup help
screens (accessed by pressing the F1 key) for a list of all the
"active keys" you can use to make selections.

     3. Position the cursor to the desired backup field.

     4. Choose the day or days to run the backup appointment. At the
"Days" field, all of the days are initially selected. An asterisk
(*) indicates a selected day. Use the right cursor arrow key to
position the cursor to the days of the week on which you don't want
the backup to run, and press the Enter key to turn off those days.
You can press the Enter key to toggle days on and off.

     5. Press the Spacebar to move the cursor to the "First appointment
time" field. Enter the desired backup time by typing the hour at "hh:"
and the minutes at "mm:". AUTORUN uses the standard 24-hour clock,
so you must enter times ranging from 00:00 (midnight) to 23:59 (11:59
        P.M.).

     6. Set up the remaining options as desired. Here's an explanation
        of each option:

"Interval between appts" is used if you want an Automatic backup to
occur more than once a day. If you set an interval time, then after
the Automatic backup occurs at the First appointment time, the backup
will repeat after the interval time has passed. Backups will continue
to repeat at the set interval.

For example, to run an appointment once a week on Friday, you would
set the day of the week and the "First appointment time" only. To
run an appointment every hour on Fridays you would also set the
"Interval between appts" field to one hour.

"Eliminate appts after" is used to set the time after which you want
automatic periodic backups to stop. If you set an "Interval between
appts" time, the Automatic backup will repeat at that interval on
the designated day(s) unless you specify an "Eliminate appts after"
        time.

For example, to run an hourly appointment three times starting at
12:00 and ending at 14:00, you would enter 12:00 in "Time of first
appointment," 1:00 in "Interval between appointments," and 14:00 in
        "Eliminate appts after."

The "Source drive" and "Append" options work just as they do on the
        other backup screens.

     7. Press the Home key to save the appointment and exit.

     8. You'll see a prompt about entering AUTORUN in the AUTOEXEC.BAT
file, which appears as you exit. Respond "Y" to activate AUTORUN
automatically when you boot your system, or "N" to activate AUTORUN
manually. To activate manually, simply enter AUTORUN from the
operating system. Your appointments will not run as scheduled unless
        AUTORUN is active.

     9. Press Home again to exit to the Main menu. Then press the
Esc key to return to the operating system prompt.

    10. When an appointment is ready to run, a prompt will be displayed
stating that the appointment will start in 10 seconds. At that time
you can let the appointment run as scheduled, press the F9 key to
cancel that occurrence of the appointment, or press the F10 key to
        postpone the appointment five minutes.

To learn more about how to set up appointments, see the section on
"AUTORUN Guidelines" later in this document.

CREATING APPOINTMENTS
The programming utility for AUTORUN is called AUTOSET. (A copy of
AUTOSET is included with FileSafe software.) But AUTOSET does much
more than run automatic backups; any program, batch file or command
you can execute from the operating system command level can be scheduled
with AUTOSET and run automatically by AUTORUN.

Important: AUTOSET is for users who are already familiar with
the operating system commands. Before you set up any appointment on
the AUTOSET screen, make sure you understand how the command you want
     to run functions.

You can run:
     > All FileSafe operating system level commands.
     > Any .EXE or .COM executable files. These are executed by
       their names, without the extensions.
     > DOS batch files (with names ending in .BAT).

You can run AUTOSET while AUTORUN is loaded and running. That means
you can continue to add to an existing schedule, even while it is
executing!

The AUTOSET Screen
You should have installed the AUTOSET program in the directory that
you installed FileSafe software in. Be sure that you have defaulted
to this directory, or have included it on a path command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT
file. Then, to display the AUTOSET Setup screen, enter:
     AUTOSET
and press the Enter key. Any appointments previously created and saved
with the AUTOSET screen or the FileSafe software's Automatic Backup
screen will also appear on the AUTOSET screen. These automatically
created appointments cannot be altered or edited with AUTOSET. They
can be altered or edited with the Automatic Backup screen. AUTOSET
can delete them. (It is also possible to delete AUTORUN.DAT and start
again.)

The AUTOSET screen has the following features:

The Appointment Line
This is the line where you enter a command and the days and times
to run the command. You can have up to twelve appointment lines. An
appointment line is broken up into five "fields" in which you enter
the desired parameters of each appointment.

The Day of the Week Field
In this field you choose the day(s) on which you want an appointment
to be executed. At least one day must be specified for an automatic
command to be run. A day is selected when its letter is displayed
in the day field. To make changes, position the cursor with the right
or left arrow keys at that day and press the Enter key. The letter
will toggle on or off.

The Start Time Field
In this field, choose the time at which you want an appointment to
run the first time. The start time is designated in hours and minutes
and is based on a 24-hour clock. (Note that a start time of 00:00
means midnight.)

The Interval Field
In this field you can choose the interval time at which you want an
appointment to repeat after the start time. The appointment will continue
to repeat at that interval unless you specify a stop time. An interval
is optional. The interval is designated in hours and minutes and is
based on a 24-hour clock.

The Stop Time Field
In this field you can choose the day and time at which you want an
appointment that is repeating at intervals to stop. A stop time, like
an interval, is optional. Stop time is inclusive; that is, if the
stop time is at an interval, the operation will be performed then.
The stop time is designated in hours and minutes and is based on a
24-hour clock. If you've specified an interval for an automatic command,
the command will repeat again and again at that interval on the designated
day(s) unless you specify the time that you want the command to stop.

The Command Line Field
This is where you enter the command to be run automatically. You enter
commands exactly as you would if you were entering them from the operating
system prompt. You can run any command, batch file, or program that
runs under the operating system. You can have up to twelve commands
that will automatically execute, one per command line. Make sure you
know the correct syntax to use to execute commands from the command
line. (It's a good idea to first try running your desired command
from the command line before specifying the command in your AUTORUN
schedule.)

AUTOSET FUNCTION KEYS
The AUTOSET screen provides function keys to help you view and edit
your command line entries:

The F6 (DELete APPointment) key deletes the entire appointment line
the cursor is in. Use F6 with caution since it clears all fields of
an appointment line. (The Backspace and Del keys erase individual
characters.)

The F7 (ADD APPointment) key opens up a new blank appointment line
at the end of the list of existing appointment lines.

The F8 (INSert APPointment) key opens up a new blank appointment line
at the cursor location, forcing the existing appointment line at that
and subsequent locations to move down one line. The F8 key is useful
if you are trying to maintain your list in a certain order.

The Command Line field has four special function keys available:

The F2 (EOL - End Of Line) key moves the cursor to the end of the
command line.

The F3 (LEFT SCRL) and F4 (RIGHT SCRL) keys move the cursor ten spaces
to the left or right in the Command Line Field. Since the command
line can display 44 characters at a time and your command can have
as many as 128 characters, these keys can be handy for viewing your
entire command.

The F5 (DELete CMD) key deletes an entire command in case you make
a mistake while entering a command.

RUNNING APPOINTMENTS
With your appointments scheduled, you're ready to activate AUTORUN.
This can be done by typing
     AUTORUN
at the command line, and pressing the Enter key. If you want AUTORUN
to pre-empt other programs to keep its appointments, type
     AUTORUN /P
and press Enter. If you prefer, you can add this line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT
file. Once executed, AUTORUN stays in memory as a TSR until you unload
it (with /U) or reboot the system.

The Pop-Up Window
Just before it's time for an appointment to run, a window will appear
in the center of your screen, displaying a message like the following:

                                 ATTENTION
                            AUTORUN Appointment
                            <sheduled command>
                         Will start in 10 seconds.
                       Press F9 to cancel appointment
Press F10 to postpone for 05 min.

where <sheduled command> is replaced by the command you entered when
you set up the appointment with AUTOSET. From the appearance of AUTORUN's
pop-up window you have 10 seconds to respond.
     > If you do nothing, AUTORUN will pre-empt your current program
(if any), execute the scheduled operations, and then return to your
       previous program.
     > If you press the F9 function key, AUTORUN cancels the appointment
       at your request.
     > If you type a number, you can change the time delay from
the default (5 minutes) to some other number. If you press F10, this
time delay is set to occur before the operation is executed.

AUTORUN PARAMETERS
You can append several parameters to modify AUTORUN's functionality.
These options are summarized in the following table.

==============================================================================
                       AUTORUN Command Line Parameters
==============================================================================
Parameter | Name | Description | Combine

           |          | <->, AUTORUN can operate only        |
           | | from the system prompt or |
           | | command line. |
___________|__________|______________________________________|________________
/<->l | logging | Causes log file to be updated | Yes

___________|__________|______________________________________|_______________
/u | Unload | Removes AUTORUN TSR from memory | No
           | | when this can be done without |
           | | conflict with other memory-resident |
           | | programs. When AUTORUN cannot be |
           | | safely removed, /u causes it to be |
           | | deactivated. |
==============================================================================

Important: Terminate and Stay Resident programs (TSRs) that are
part of an AUTORUN appointment will reside in memory only for the
duration of the appointment. TSRs that were already loaded from the
command line when an AUTORUN appointment was performed, on the other
hand, will still be in memory after the appointment is completed.

SKIPPED AND CANCELED APPOINTMENTS
AUTORUN will skip an appointment under the following circumstances:
     > You activated AUTORUN after the appointment was supposed
       to have been performed.
     > AUTORUN was prevented from performing a periodic appointment
beyond the point when half of it's period had elapsed.

AUTORUN will cancel an appointment under the following circumstances:
     > You instructed AUTORUN to cancel the operation when you saw the pop-up
       window appear.
     > AUTORUN loaded, but a condition existed that caused the
       operation to fail.

Skipped and canceled appointments are logged in the file AUTORUN.LOG,
located in the same directory AUTORUN resides in.

If AUTORUN is unable to perform an appointment before the day ends
at midnight, it will skip the appointment. If the user postpones the
appointment past midnight, on the other hand, AUTORUN will perform
it (not skip it).

HOW TO TURN AUTORUN OFF
You can remove (unload) AUTORUN by typing:
     AUTORUN /U
and pressing the Enter key. If AUTORUN cannot be unloaded from memory
without causing problems with other programs, the /U parameter simply
disables AUTORUN.

Warning: Use of this parameter will prevent scheduled appointments
from being performed. Moreover, if you activate AUTORUN later in the
day, AUTORUN will function as if it is being started for the first
time: appointments whose time has passed will be skipped.

You can enable AUTORUN again by typing:
     AUTORUN
and pressing the Enter key.

TRACKING THE APPOINTMENTS
Each time AUTORUN attempts to complete a scheduled appointment, it
updates the file AUTORUN.LOG. This log file resides in the same directory
as AUTORUN.EXE and AUTOSET.EXE.

AUTORUN.LOG is written in ASCII text, and can be displayed by means
of the DOS TYPE command or accessed with any ordinary text editor.
It is 79 characters across (to facilitate easy printing on standard
line printers). It shows which tasks were executed; which were skipped
(and, in the case of periodic appointments, how many times they were
skipped); and which ones were canceled at the user's request.

We recommend that you check AUTORUN.LOG after every operation. Notice
operations that took a very short time (a second or two). These are
generally operations that failed to execute properly because of insufficient
memory or other system-related conditions.

AN EXAMPLE OF AUTORUN.LOG
Let's take a look at how AUTORUN logs its activities. As an example,
consider the appointments reflected in the following AUTOSET schedule.

                             AutoRun setup

SMTWTFS Start Interval Stop Command line
       SMTWTFS 08:00 01:00 11:00 TAPE SBK C:/M
       SMTWTFS 11:00 00:00 00:00 TYPE SKIPLIST.TXT
       SMTWTFS 19:00 00:00 00:00 TAPE SBK C:

In this example three appointments had been scheduled for the day.
Now, let's assume the computer was turned on at 10:30 AM. The file
AUTORUN.LOG (found in the MTN_TAPE directory) might look like the
one shown below.

  DATE START FINISH ACTION COMMAND
  -------- -------- -------- -------------- -------------------------

AUTORUN logged this periodic operation as skipped the first three
times, because the appointed times passed before the computer (or
AUTORUN) had been activated. The fourth time, the Selective Modified
backup did run.

The next operation would have typed the contents of SKIPLIST.TXT to
screen. The user canceled this operation when he/she saw the pop-up
window.

Finally, AUTORUN carried out a Complete Selective backup of drive
C: at 7:00 P.M. This last operation took about two and one-half hours
to complete.

AUTORUN GUIDELINES
To use AUTORUN to your best advantage, you should carefully plan the
appointments you set up.

AUTORUN alerts you before an appointment is due to happen so you can
choose whether to go ahead with the appointment or postpone or cancel
it. AUTORUN will inform you if you miss repeated appointments.

AUTORUN needs to be activated only once after a boot. You can activate
AUTORUN manually anytime after your system has booted or have the
AUTOEXEC.BAT file activate AUTORUN.

Note:If AUTORUN is invoked and any of the current day's appointments
were missed, a message appears when you boot your system saying that
you've missed appointments and may want to reschedule them. This message
appears only if the current day's appointments were missed.

For example, if your system was off on Monday when appointments were
scheduled and then turned on Tuesday, a day with no appointments
scheduled, the missed appointment message would not appear. You
would have to reschedule Monday's appointments or wait to run them
     the following Monday.

To completely cancel an appointment, delete it from the AUTOSET Setup
screen and save this schedule change with the Home key.

SOME AUTORUN SCENARIOS
Automatic operations can run into difficulties. Sometimes conditions
exist that prevent them from executing on time. Occasionally, the
way you've scheduled appointments can lead to conflicts. And sometimes,
delayed appointments from the previous day's schedule can "spill over"
into a second day. AUTORUN has been engineered to allow for these
contingencies.

In the rest of this document, we present some possible conflict scenarios,
created to help illustrate AUTORUN's heuristics.

Scenario 1
You're using the computer in a way that conflicts with AUTORUN. (For
example, you're using a program that runs in graphics mode.) At the
scheduled time, AUTORUN tries unsuccessfully to execute a single appointment.

What Happens: The originally scheduled time for the appointment goes
by. AUTORUN keeps retrying until user exits that program. At that
instant, the appointment executes.

Scenario 2
A single appointment is scheduled for 4:55 P.M. Periodic appointments
are also scheduled, for 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 P.M. AUTORUN can't execute
the periodic operation that is due to happen at 5 P.M., because the
4:55 P.M. single operation is already running, and the system is busy.

What Happens: AUTORUN keeps retrying until the 4:55 P.M. operation
terminates. If the operation finishes before 1/2 of the period (interval)
has elapsed (5:30), AUTORUN will immediately execute the 5P.M. periodic
appointment. On the other hand, if the 4:55 P.M. operation takes longer
and doesn't finish until 5:30 P.M. or later, the 5 P.M. periodic appointment
is skipped. AUTORUN waits until 6 P.M. and carries out the next periodic
event.

Scenario 3
There are two scheduled events both due to occur at the same time.

What Happens: AUTORUN does the one listed first in the queue. (To
view the queue, type AUTOSET at the system prompt.)

Scenario 4
You've scheduled appointments for today that cannot be completed in
a single day. AUTORUN has been able to run some of its appointments
for the day, but has not completed the entire queue. Midnight comes
and and goes, and so the next day's operations have officially begun.

What Happens: AUTORUN completes the appointments for the previous
day (which it had already begun). Then AUTORUN loads the queue containing
the new day's appointments.

Scenario 5
A condition exists that prevents AUTORUN from doing tasks. (For example,
a program is running that uses up too much memory, leaving insufficient
memory for the one of the items in AUTORUN's schedule.) AUTORUN thus
has its queue loaded, and is waiting for the condition that obstructs
operations to be removed. Midnight comes and goes, and a new day of
operations officially begins. The obstructing condition clears up
at 12:05 A.M.

What Happens: AUTORUN abandons the previous day's queue. In this scenario,
AUTORUN goes straight into the new day's queue.
